TAS may have a decent team this year.

Thanks for the report LG,
Two questions;
What were the View backs like?
After seeing View and New, where will the big match up's be for week 1? Who are you favouring to win?

Two questions;

1.What were the View backs like?

2. After seeing View and New, where will the big match up's be for week 1? Who are you favouring to win?

1. They were good enough, but not as good as the forwards, who had a strong and well-balanced backrow, and played well as a pack, literally, because they hunted well. The best of their backs yesterday was likely slippery 14. Tooth. If the lads were senior players the backs would be buying the drinks for the forwards a lot this year methinks. Their ball is good stuff.

2. I was thinking of who would win the comp on the way home from Hunters Hill yesterday and trying to make sense of the trial results I knew.

New had the best individuals across the park and though they beat View in the trial they clocked off a lot during that game according to reports. They also went walkabout against Joeys for part of that game.

View were terrific in the 2nd half yesterday but not too scary in the 1st. Joeys would be ahead of Scots who didn't trouble them much; nor did Scots trouble Kings. I hadn't heard much about Shore, or had forgotten.

So I was thinking: 1. New, 2. View, 3. Kings, 4/5 Joeys/Shore etc

But then came yesterday's news that Scots smacked New, and Shore beat Kings; so I have no clue now.

CTPE's list could be on the money though Joeys could finish lower. Their youngsters understandably have trouble in the 2nd half with the pace of Ones rugby and the strength required for it in contact. Their heart is of Ones quality however.

It wouldn't surprise me if New finishes higher because they have so many good players and only have to improve their teamwork to do so. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. It looks like Scots have got their act together after their military medium trial against Joeys but 2nd looks high.

Basically I have no clue now, and by extension have no clue about Round 1 and don't know who is playing anyhow and am too lazy to look it up. Maybe I will read some tea leaves later. They will probably be more accurate than my tips.

Hi Lee

Thanks for your report on the View vs Joeys match. This is the first time i have been at the same game as you so i will correct you on a couple of things...

Not sure how you arrived at that opinion on Tooth. Are you sure you were watching the right player? He only touched the ball a couple of times and he went of injured just after half time. I thought Vaux at 10 was their best back.

And as to your comment about New beating View in the trials.... They haven't played each other yet!!

New have played Kings (Won 24-17ish) Joeys (Won 39-29) and Scots (Lost 29-12)
Kings have played New (Lost 17-24) Joeys (Won 19-16) View (Lost 25-10) and Shore (Lost 15-7)
View have played Waverley (won 27-14) St Pats (won 61-0) Scots (won 44-12) Kings (won 25-10) and Joeys (Won 41-18)
Scots have played Waverley (Won 25-15ish) Joeys (Lost 34-17ish) View (lost 44-12) Shore (won ????) and New (Won 29-12)
Joeys have played Scots (Won 34-17ish) Kings (lost 16-19) New (lost 29-39) and View (Lost 41-18)
Shore have played Cranbrook (won 36-0??) Stannies (won???) New (lost 36-12) Scots (Lost ???) and Kings (won 15-7)

So from based on the above trial form i will pick

1. View
2. New (based on injured players returning later in the comp)
3. Scots
4. Shore
5. Kings
6. Joeys
7. Grammar

Riverview flogged Joeys 41-18. 7 tries to 2.

Riverview forwards dominated.

Joeys lead at half time on the back of plenty of penalties. Riverview clicked into gear in the second half and were never in trouble.

Best for Riverview 8 and 6 (think he bagged a hat trick)

Agree. Deegan completely shut down by the view flankers and not given any room. Took some hard knocks but to his credit got back up again. Just a simple case of Joeys backs not getting any ball-view also better in the lineouts.

No dramas on that front - pretty small crowd really, although not surprising given it was a trial. Can anyone confirm or deny the early kick off that has been suggested for the comp game? Would be such a shame if it is true.

sources tell me that last week riverview re-adressed their decision of the early kick off against joeys and have decided to put the game time back to the traditional 3.15 time.

I've now seen all Riverview, New, joeys and scots play at least once.

Like most games of rugby it will be decided up front.

I think Riverview and Newington are the top 2. Absolute daylight back to the rest.

It will be a great game between the two on Saturday. My feeling is the Riverview forwards will have a slight edge. I love how the 2 New props hit it up one after another, both getting over the advantage line with ease. But Riverview's Wells waits just off the ruck and absolutely hammers anyone hitting it up. Can't wait for the collision.

I've seen Rivervuew's Dempsey a few times now, what a ball runner ! His hit and spin move to score his 3rd try on Saturday was something else (as was his move to beat one, draw 2 to deliver the Riverview winger the easiest try he will ever score). Don't think New will be able to contain him for the full 70 min on Saturday.

Having said all of that, it don't think Riverview's backs are anything thing special.

GPS season to be determined on Saturday

Riverview by 10

I think Riverview have

Can anyone who was at the New v Scots game tell me whether Mark Baldwin played ?

And Magpie52 ... as a bloke who spent his youth banging the metal fence at Lidcombe baying for silvertail blood ... you're name gives me a warm inner glow.
For anyone outside the loop 1952 was the year the Western Suburbs Magpies last won the premiership.
