Digby Ioane could miss rest of World Cup

Digby Ioane is in danger of being out of the World Cup after the Wallaby winger was sent to hospital in Auckland today for scans on a suspected broken hand.

The injury occurred during yesterday's 32-6 victory by Australia over Italy at North Harbour Stadium in which Ioane was one of four try scorers for the Wallabies.

Some hours after the Test, Ioane's hand began to swell near his thumb prompting Wallaby officials to organise a scan this afternoon. They are unsure how serious the injury is but should know the result in a few hours.

Ioane is the in-form winger in world rugby playing a pivotal role for the Queensland Reds in their Super Rugby tournament victory as well as Australia's triumph in the Tri Nations. He has played all six Tests for the Wallabies this year after missing almost the entire 2010 international season due to a shoulder injury.

Ioane's injury may open the door for Drew Mitchell to return to the Wallabies starting side after the Waratahs winger fractured his ankle in April during a Super Rugby derby against Queensland.

It could also give Anthony Fainga'a a selection reprieve with the Reds centre widely tipped to make way for James O'Connor in the side to face Ireland on Saturday at Eden Park in Auckland. Should Ioane be ruled out, Fainga'a may keep his position at outside centre with Adam Ashley-Cooper shifting out to the left wing.

Shiiiiiiiiiit...

It gives Mitchell an opening, and Fainga'a a possible reprieve, but Ioane is one of the best wingers in the world right now and he's been an essential part of the team this year.

Might still be able to play with a broken hand, depending on which bone it is ...

I've said it before. The defensive structure without Digby becomes a minefield. He and Cooper are a job lot. Has Schmoooo been practicing his defense in the # 10 channel? Diggers and Genia are the 2 most valuable backs in the team.
