Digby Ioane with suspected broken hand

The Wallabies have suffered a major Rugby World Cup blow with
scans revealing gun winger DIGBY IOANE has a fractured thumb
requiring surgery.
The injury appears likely to rule IOANE out for the rest of the
tournament.

So rest him for the remaining pool matches?

Thats what, 3/4 weeks of rest, surely thats plenty of time for a thumb to be right to go?

Hell, just take leaf out of Jone Tawake's book and show some real balls!

Surely not Lachie Turner. he scored 3 tries in the entirety of the Super 15 season. All of which were scored without breaking a tackle. He is really out of form at the moment...

Surely we have enough backline options to add a forward like Beau Robinson into the mix? Or can you only replace in the same position?

Losing a fantastic attacking weapon will be well solved with the retention of the Ant.

JOC (James O'Connor) isn capable of the work either, you have to punt on Drew here.

Do you mean it won't be solved with Ant. Cos as much as I rate the guy, he isn't in there for his attack.

I think replacing Ioane with JOC (James O'Connor) will unbalance the team, but I don't see what else you can do atm. Mitchell isn't ready to start, but the more game time he gets the better.

I don't say this as a serious suggestion for the WC, but I have always wanted to see how Horne would go on the wing. I know his best position will be 13, but he certainly has the pace for it.

I think it should be Giteau if anyone, Turner has been far from impressive and Davies was off the pace against Samoa. There is no one back home who I would want in the squad other then perhaps Robinson as a back-up for Pocock. Now would be the best time to send him over and give BamBam a rest against Russia and USA. We have enough backs over there to deal with this loss.

Whats point of replacing him with an inside back? Giteau is a good player, but he will not be used as there are at least 3 players ahead of him in the pecking order in both the positions he specialises in - 10: QC (Quade Cooper), JOC (James O'Connor), Barnes, Beale and 12: McCabe, Fainga'a, Barnes.

I am not one to claim playing through injury is a good idea or is in anyway easy, but surely it being the RWC it's worth risking an injection or two with some strapping could get him through a Semi and a Final?

If Drew isn't ready to start he shouldn't be in the squad. Out of everyone we have over there he is th only one that comes close to having the same sort of impact on the game that digby does.

JOC (James O'Connor) has the twinkle toes but he isn't going to take hit ups like digby does. Our centre pairing as defensively sound as it is is pedestrian at best, we need someob of drew or digbys involvement or the balance goe out the window

dont trust those Kiwi surgeons....fly him home for the Operation:)

just in case they replace his thumb with a big toe...lol

Nah, if he was playing for Japan, they would sever his thumb off, problem fixed!! lol

Could always give his thumb to the traditional method of Samoan therapeutic massage...Sprains, small fractures etc would be massaged out over a number of days extremely painful however the recovery time is remarkable...think physio using the full strength/weight of the therapist...

grrrrrrrrrr....

If Digby is back for the quarters then that is good news. things could be worse. People forget how good Mitchell is. Give him Ioanes spot until Ioane is fit again.

O'Connor taking over Digby at 10, Mitchell getting a run is a pretty sweet prospect.

Doubt Mitchell has gone from brilliant to useless, injury notwithstanding. The guy had a genuine claim as best winger in rugby.

Hurts to lose Digby at world best but could prove fantastic if Mitchell gets a chance to return to form and Diggers returns in quarters.

I don't think Drew, Palu, TPN or Slipper is ready to start atm and they were all picked in the squad. Sure they have played a game or two, but I thought it was the general consensus that they are using the pool games to get them into top form.

I agree that we need Drew in there ASAP because JOC (James O'Connor) offers a completely different skill set to Ioane, i.e. mitchell & JOC (James O'Connor) is more balanced than AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) & JOC (James O'Connor). However, I don't think Mitchell is ready to start yet. I reckon he will be eased back in off the bench and start against the minnows where it is of less consequence that he isn't match fit.

P.S. I think people underestimate how long it takes to get back to top form - remember Genia & Fatcat at the end of last year, Palu the year before - but the good thing is they only need to peak round the semi or finals (or perhaps the quarters).

If he isn't match fit, start him then hook him when he gets tired, better than putting him on with 30 to go and crossing fingers

The back line looked a lot sharper when Ant came off, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) slotted into 13 and O'connor was on.
I would say keep the backline how it ended and bring mitchell on. He got through the canada game well. if he wasn't fit, he wouldn't be there.

personally i didn't think much of ant's game. provided nothing in attack yesterday and do you really want him on the bench? he can only slot into two positions.

Could be barnes coming onto the bench to cover 10/12 and i'd say he could easily cover 13 too.
when BB comes on to 12, shift mccabe to the wing and bring mitchell off for a rest.

if form is anything to go by, the wallabies should put the paddy's to the sword.

If it's a scaphoid fracture, a month won't do anything. A simple knock to the thumb becomes agonizing, almost paralysing. Take it from someone who has tried to tape up a thumb and play.
