If it is that bad is it really worth risking it in the next 3 matches? Anyone have any idea what sort of permanent damage this could do?
Play the next game, then suck it up and pull out. As sad as it would be to see him ruled out of the cup it would be worse to see this turn into a potential career ender.

I'm torn on this. A part of me wants all the teams to be at full strength for the sake of the event... but another part of me wants the Wallabies to have the best possible chance of winning it.
I would feel seriously sorry for McCaw himself - the poor bloke will be shattered if this is true.

If Australia are not to make the final I want New Zealand to win it, then at least it goes to a team that deserves it and it keeps the cup down south without giving the Saffas one up on us...

I'm happy for New Zealand, but wouldn't mind Wales either. I want a team who actually tries to use the ball outside the opposition 22 to win the cup. The way I see it that just about rules out everyone except NZ, Aus and Wales.

Unfortunately I have to agree Scotty. My biggest fear is a team winning the world cup using ultra conservative play as this could concrete the belief that this is what is required to win knock out rugby.
It's funny though the teams you didn't name- perhaps with the exception of Argentina have backs and ball running back- rows that as individuals are dynamic and have the skills to play expansive rugby. As much as it pains me to say the England back line this weekend is one of the most exciting units I have seen them field. In nearly every position it could be argued they have the same skills and talents as the much talked about Wallaby backline but alas they are set with a different mentality.
As a comment to the topic of the thread there would be flutters in a few Kiwi hearts. Surely if there are any doubts to his fitness he won't play this weekend as there are bigger fish (read- Wallabies or Boks and possibly a world cup final) to fry. As a true sports fanatic I hope he is fit for all their remaining games as I always like to see the best players competing. As a wallabies supporter and on the condition we get through this weekend- Maybe he could be out just another few weeks.

I have plenty of kiwi friends here in Sydney and travel to NZ regularly for work. The vast vast vast majority of kiwis are good to talk to re rugby and are far from cocky re this RWC. Very few of them are poor winners too.
I feel better for having said that. I think McCaw has been quiet this year so while NZ would be weaker with out him, I suspect it would be just as much due to the physcologial impact as to any reduction in the combined abilities of the 15 men in black that take the field.
I can see Mundine calling for SBW to play in the 7 jersey if Richie is rubbed out!

EVERY team has players missing by virtue of injury. Juan Smith, Francois Steyn, Drew Mitchell, Cliff Palu, Benn Robinson.
It's one thing if a player is sadly removed from the equation because of non-rugby factors, like being hit by a car or not being able to play for some other reason - but McCaw and Carter are unwell because of rugby. Maybe Carter is so awesome because he trains and trains and trains? Well, where did he get injured?
Training. Perhaps if he didn't train as much, he wouldn't be as good, but he'd be playing this weekend? McCaw is the same? Maybe 100 tests of being the best has finally caught up with one of his body parts?
Staying healthy and on the paddock is as much a part of it as kicking all your kicks and making all your tackles.
