I'm finding it hard to get my head around the relentless sneering at Wests. I think they're a great club who've been knocking on the door of serious success for quite a few years. I hope it comes to them soon.

Perhaps its because they consistently raid the playing and coaching ranks of neighbouring clubs with promises of them joining the promised land, only to continue to seriously under achieve. A year or two ago, they posted a 100K profit. Imagine what Uni could achieve with that sort of profit...................

I think no9 countered your claims of how Wests use their profits and your perceived raiding of other clubs, and its obvious that Wests have been more victim than perpetrator over the years. In my time I remember players of the likes of Laurie Monaghan (Gordon), Mick Ellem (Manly), Tony Daly (Randwick), Mick Foley (QLD), Bill Young (Eastwood) and many other first grade players enticed away from Concord for reasons best known to themselves. Good luck to all of them and while it didn't help the cause of winning a premiiership the Wests club just went about its business and put out competetive teams each winter weekend.

Why should they apologise for this? They are making a profit and are developing competetive colts teams that will hopefully reap some rewards if they are not enticed away (as noted in earlier posts) at a time when other clubs are making large losses and living well outside their means .

If success is based purely around Shute Shield premierships then I would suggest every club other than Uni and Eastwood should be being criticised on here as its been at least 20 years since celebrations for many clubs. I think it's been well documented why Uni and Eastwood have been the standouts over the last decade and until the SRU grows some balls and puts in place a policy to prevent the stockpiling of talent amongst the lucky few then all clubs will continue to suffer.

Over the years Wests have also had a high proportion of polynesian players who are fairly transient by nature who will change club if they change address and can be keen to turn a dollar out of their talents (as they are entitled to do) which can lead to player turnover. These aren't excuses, just reasons that exist within the Wests club (but not exclusive to) that those looking from the outside pass judgement on without knowing the intracacies of the club.

Ouside of this I just assume you, Tahboy and Keithy had the shit kicked out of you by a Wests team in your past and are hanging on to that grudge with a vengeance.

The real explanation for his comments are , that he's never gotten over the fact that he left the club as a failure.

No I've never had the shit kicked out of me by west teams and I don't carry any mental scars or suffer from bed wetting throughy experiences playing against Wests.
I just don't think they are a well run club as suggested end of story.

Very Interesting. I hear quite a few clubs are financially challenged. Of the Shute Shield Clubs - can you rank the quality of management or clubs that are well run down to the other end of the scale? that would be interesting..
also, what can these clubs do to raise funds? The ARU is allegedly out of $$$

I remember playing out there in 2001 or 2002 and i was in a maul after a lineout, and thought an all in brawl had broken out, i was copping punches from everywhere, but the ball moved on and all the fists disappeared, closest i come to any 'mental scars' too mate!

Heard through the grapevine that the last 5 rounds split will be based on your club championship position after the first 11 rounds. This means the top 6 clubs after the 11 rounds are in the finals and the bottom six fight out the last 2 spots. Good luck planning your clubs season around this structure.
After 11 rounds half the comp has 5 home games and the other half 6. The last five games could see 1 club get 2 home matches and with their orginal 5 for a total of 7 home matches while others have 9 home matches. This will make for a fair comp. especially with clubs losing matchday funds through gate takings and food/beer sales.
This should make for an interesting situation at Uni regarding ground use. The AFL use No. 1 when the grades teams are away. Without 8 games every 2nd week there could be a clash. Many will love seeing a 1st grade match on TV game being played at St Paul's.

I don't think Uni'd have much trouble scheduling their last 5 matches at home, or away. As they're the only club who has to share their ground on Saturdays even I'd have no trouble working a roster around their home matches for those last 5 games.

Us NSW taxpayers pay a lot of money to fund Sydney Uni each year you would think they could at least have a decent field to play on and decent facilities for spectators. St Paul's oval where there colts play is a disgrace, no shelter players get changed on the ground no water plus you get the privilege to pay to park your car.
You would think Uni could do better than have a million dollar team play on better grounds

Yep St.Paul's has no facilities but the oval, like all college ovals, is owned by the college and not the Uni. It would be upto the principal to fix the facilities, not the uni or the rugby club. I doubt tax payers are benefactors of the college.

We won the comp that year................how did Wests go?

I'm glad to think that type of behaviour wasn't the norm over there and was limited to premiership wins only. Could you possibly enlighten us as to how many times you've won it since then, as that appears to be all that gauges success and enjoyment of the game to some who troll these pages.

Manly won it again in 1997 to answer your question. However I suspect you knew that answer.

How many times has Wests won the Shute Shield since 1983?

Actually the oval belongs to Syd Uni so please leave your disparaging remarks out.
