I must make a point I am Welsh and visit a few Welsh boards and cant recall anyone blasting the ref, the only criticism was when Ioane was on the floor so out of the game Cuthbert went to pick the ball up and Ioane took his legs away while still on the floor, My opinion for what its worth is that was a yellow card,
I enjoyed the Game I think you caught the Welsh off guard in that first Half 20/6 was a big ask but they came close, what is being said on the Welsh boards is many of that first team haven't played since March others longer than that, It takes a couple of games to get your match fitness back, I have'nt seen the Welsh pack play so poorly for an age, not taking anything away from you, you were superb at the break down this gave Barnes and Genia an Armchair ride I will be very surprised and disapointed if they get the same ride in the next test.

Good points Dai, we were beaten fair and square to be honest. The undercooked reason is a fair point but then why didn't we arrange a warm up game en route to Oz for the full squad ? The Barbarians game was totally meaningless as a warm up cause 16 players were already in Oz, and ironically the ones who hadn't played for months like the centres, Warburton, Charteris and Gethin Jenkins were wrapped in cotton wool and not given any much needed gametime.
Why couldn't we have come to Oz a week early and played a couple of provinces as warm ups with the full side ?
Money is of course the answer the WRU had to get the babas game in to raise funds as per usual.

Douglas, Morahan have both been dropped from the Squad. Shipperley has been called back in along with Foley. Kepu has a hand injury and is in doubt. Beale is an outside chance of being fit.
How big is the Wallaby squad now, is it 30? Has it been announced who is in?

Edit: Found something on it...

Kepu in doubt for Wallabies second Test

WALLABIES prop Sekope Kepu is in doubt for the second Test against Wales after injuring his hand in Saturday night's 27-19 series-opening victory at Suncorp Stadium.

Kepu played all 80 minutes in the three-tries-to-one victory over the Six Nations champions but was sent for scans on Sunday morning which will determine his availability for the Melbourne clash.

The NSW tight-head produced a strong display as the Australian scrum held firm against the highly-rated Welsh pack and would be a loss for the Wallabies. But coach Robbie Deans has the luxury of calling on in-form Brumbies prop Dan Palmer who enjoyed a fine debut against Scotland on Tuesday night.

. . .

Dom Shipperley and Bernard Foley have rejoined Australia's 30-man squad, with Luke Morahan and Kane Douglas stepping out, while Deans said Kurtley Beale remains some chance of returning from a shoulder injury at Etihad Stadium.
Relieved Deans has predicted a brilliant three-match series which could go down to the wire after an enthralling 27-19 triumph over Wales on Saturday night.

Australia bounced back emphatically from their disastrous 9-6 upset loss to Scotland on Tuesday night in Newcastle by clicking into gear to unlock the strong Welsh defence at Suncorp Stadium.

But despite their three-tries-to-one triumph, to continue the tourists' 43-year drought Down Under, the Wallabies only escaped after withstanding a spirited second-half comeback by the tourists.

Down 20-6 with half an hour to play, the Red Dragons fired and Australia's defence tired as they hit back to close the gap to one point with 17 minutes left.

Wales could have hit the lead if not for five-eighth Rhys Priestland uncharacteristically bombing a certain try by dropping a high pass with a three-man overlap outside him, while they also fumbled at other crucial times.

"We just didn't take those opportunities in the second half," Welsh coach Rob Howley lamented.

"We probably left two or three tries out on the park to be honest."

In the end, man of the match Will Genia sent centre Pat McCabe, running a brilliant angle, over for the match-clincher.

Deans admitted he was nervous when the ultra-fit Six Nations champions stormed back and expects them to keep coming in the second Test in Melbourne.

Wales must turnaround their poor record in Australia on Saturday night under the Etihad Stadium roof to keep the series alive but both teams know there is little between them.

"It's do or die next week," Deans said.

"It will be another dry ball so I imagine it will be edge of the seat stuff which will good.

"They (Wales) are a fit side, it's going to be a great series, for sure."

Deans praised under-pressure playmaker Berrick Barnes who produced a fine all-round game and showed good vision to help orchestrate his first win in eight matches.

But it was Genia who was the stand-out, highlighted by a solo 35m try after halftime where he split two tight-forwards and then stepped around fullback James Hook to score.

"The credit has to go to the guys up front; they won us quick ball," the halfback said.

"The wingers worked off the edges ... so I was lucky because the other guys just made my job so much easier."

Wales have winger George North (deep cork) in some doubt for the second Test while centre Scott Williams suffered from a head clash.

The team gets smaller, but the coaching staff gets bigger...
Deans calls on experience of Brumbies coach
June 11, 2012
DB-white-wide-20120610192402893015-420x0.jpg
Brumbies coach Jake White will step into Wallabies camp this week to assist Robbie Deans.
Robbie Deans, who admitted he had just endured the most challenging week of his coaching career, will call in Brumbies and former Springboks World Cup-winning coach Jake White this week to provide a different voice at training. Deans has also not given up hope of his errant No.10 Kurtley Beale being available for the second Test against Wales in Melbourne on Saturday night.
The Wallabies coach, whose position was under serious threat after Australia was downed by Scotland in Newcastle last Tuesday night, was more buoyant yesterday after his team rallied to defeat the grand slam Six Nations champion in the opening international of three in Brisbane.
While Wales heads to Canberra for tomorrow night's match against the ACT Brumbies, Deans is adamant the tourists will go up several gears in Melbourne. He knows the Welsh believed that the Brisbane Test was their best opportunity in decades to win in Australia for the first time since 1969.
After the Brumbies match White will travel to Melbourne and attend one of the Australian training sessions. In recent weeks White has provided assistance to Deans, including giving tight-head Dan Palmer permission to attend several extra Wallabies trainings.
The last week has been tricky for Deans having to prepare a Test team twice in five days in two different cities. When yesterday asked if this had been one of the most challenging weeks of his long coaching career, Deans replied: ''The''.
Was it because of the demands, or the personal pressure? ''Just the demands. Personal pressure is identical week to week. It never varies,'' Deans replied.
While Deans will reward the team that won at Suncorp Stadium by picking virtually the same side for Melbourne, there is a chance Beale could move to the bench. The only possible change to the starting XV is Palmer moving in for Sekope Kepu, who has a strained forearm.
Whether Beale is available depends on two factors - if he can convince the selectors that he has overcome his shoulder injury, and whether he will have to front an Australian Rugby Union disciplinary hearing. The ARU is investigating an incident involving Beale and Quade Cooper at Brisbane's Victory Hotel early Friday morning, to which police were called. The ARU was last night awaiting a report from Queensland Police. No charges were laid.
But Beale may not be shunted straight back in at the expense of Berrick Barnes. Deans showed faith in Barnes after a lacklustre performance against Scotland, and recent struggles with the Waratahs. Admittedly Deans did not have too many other options - James O'Connor, Cooper and Beale were all unavailable through injury - but Barnes rewarded his coach with a high-quality performance.

Agree this is tough: we've had the same problem on our EOYTs n the past. Sometimes the Wallabies started playing their best rugby just before they got on the plane to come home.

Has there been any mention over there about the indifferent form of Priestland - not only in the test match but also at the end of the season over there?

Great win for Oz, Pocock outstanding again, could get close in the next games, I'm not a big Falatau fan and if Ryan Jones starts next I predict a Welsh win.

The legendary Barry John has called for James Hook to start at 10 this week. Many are also bemused why Ospreys 10 Dan Biggar was overlooked for the tour as he's been the form 10 in Wales by some distance this year.

Priestland! there has been pages upon pages about him, many of the Welsh fans want him droped, I'm not sure thats the way to go, his kicking out of hand and decisoin making have been abysmal,
At the minute his confidence is very low, he seems to be panicking thus making his decision making poor, when your a ten you need a clear head to scan whats in front of you, decisions are made very quickly so the calmer you are the better the decisions, One could argue that he was behind the loosing pack but he hasn#t been in the 6N perhaps a spell on the bench to give him the Kick he needs,
I will say that it might not be all his fault, The service he receives from Phillips is not always the fastest if he was along side Genia there might be a marked improvement,
As Wales fan has said people calling for Hook, I think Hook is nearly a 10 nearly a 12 and nearly a 15, good for bench cover but there are better players than him in all those positions,
Bigger the form 10 in Wales has a bit of an attitude problem, or did have but he's not the answer either in my opinion,
I think someone needs to sit down with preistland and try and find out how he has gone from being potentially a very good Flyhalf to a mediocre one.

BTW, I think the next test will be a little different;)

I've only seen extended highlights of the WB and AB matches, but a few things that comes to mind:

(a) Our lack of a strong-running centre/link man (maybe AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is the closest thing but he's doesn't display the slick hands).

(b) All our tries (at least from backline play) traditionally comes from single hitups/individual making a linebreak/stepping defence/chip over the top (the wheel house of JOC (James O'Connor)/Cooper/Beale) etc, compared to running support play/hands through the backline that the ABs traditionally play. Our focus is otherwise on individual man-on-man defence capability, (the wheelhouse of Fingers/Horne/McCabe). I'd argue we don't have enough players who can do BOTH - or at least both well.

(c) Does anyone remember the days of the "Backline Moves" - things like looping/wrapping; switching - anything to create the extra man? For the last 10 years or so, it's been hitup hitup hitup. Christ, look at any of the tries that Ella/Campo scored in the Grand Slam - any of those moves would be handy to at least have a crack with. However, I think (a) and (b) above prevent that.

If we're so skinny for second-rowers at the moment, and one of them is positively pensionable, why has Douglas been dropped from the squad? Kane would have to up there as the form TH lock of the whole competition. We desperately need to develop a couple more 4s and 5s, surely Douglas is jostling at the front of the queue to be developed.

Why Pyle and Douglas have been cast aside is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Sharpe aside, these have been the form 5 and 4 so far. But, obviously not Deans' favourites. Douglas is one reason Kepu has been so good at THP so far and Pyle has been excellent in the air and round the park. Palmer with Douglas behind him would be awesome.

Completely agree. I assume Caderyn Neville is still in the squad which makes dropping Pyle and Douglas all the more bizarre. I think Neville has a good future ahead of him but he is very green.

is any other paper other than the Canberra Times reporting it has White coming in to help Deans? I've only seen it as Deans inviting White to attend training. As he did for the QLD coaches.

There wouldn't have had anyone to play. Shute shield Qld premier Rugby and Super Rugby are all in full swing.
