Jets you are probably right with stopping Falou. I remember way back in league, a little bloke named Boustead was matched up on the wing against Harris (a giant in those days) from NSW. Boustead hit harris before he got up speed and outplayed him - went on to Aussie team. Smart bugger, strategy worked a dream

While a lot of Tah fans are expecting a win I think that's highly unlikely. Why?
  • This is the first game the Waratahs will be playing under a totally different game plan to what they are used to. The bulk of the Wallaby pack are used to playing with no game plan at all. Most of the team to be selected will have less than 60 minutes under their belt playing the new style under match conditions. I am expecting the team to win and lose a few early games and to finally start to fire about round 5 or 6 once they really get into the pattern of what they are trying to do. A bit like 2008 actually.
  • Foley is still under an injury cloud and if he plays he is likely to be fairly conservative until he is sure his ankle is OK. If he's out then Volavola has to come in and he sprayed passes everywhere last week. That's not unexpected for a player playing a different position to what he played last year and making a huge step up in class. You'd expect nerves to be a problem again if he has to start, especially against one of the world's best fly-halves. He's got a lot of talent, but he's very raw.
  • It's forecast to be wet, which means a forward oriented battle and we will not have anyone in the backs who is a known field position kicker. Mitchell is probably our best and that's a worry.
  • The returning Wallabies will be rusty. Half a game against the Crusaders is not enough to get them back in the groove IMO and I expect to see plenty of dropped ball and poor passes (like the Crusader game).
  • Our defensive patterns in the trials were not great, particularly our maul defence. We will need to do a lot better and that will take another couple of weeks to address I think.
So I'm expecting a close, hard fought game where we will have the advantage in the set piece but probably not at the breakdown. The Reds had a hard hitout under match conditions and a full 80 minutes experience of how the ref's want the breakdowns to work. My heart says the Tahs, but my head says this week might be a bridge too far.

Pictures of the Tahs training this week showed Tilse at THP. There was mention of both Tilse's and Kepu's THP/LHP versatility, spose that means Jeremy's pencilled in at 3 and Sekope at 1.

I've watched Tilse intently during his warmups the last two seasons, he seems to've done a lot of work on his physical development (or maybe he's starting to get the body of a mature 26 year old), to my eye he now looks more like a THP than an LHP. For all the dross shovelled his way Tilse has rarely let the Tahs down when he's got on the paddock.

SMH today suggests Tilse in for Robbo at LHP.

Great to see Tilse rewarded - NOTE Robo just doesn't work hard enough- just never seems to be fit for 60 onwards - plenty of young blokes wanting the position so finger needs to be extracted in 2013

Out of all the props in the country, Robbo really isn't built for running. He's short and rotund. It's probably why he's also the best LHP we have.

I didn't really notice Robbo's fitness being an issue against the Crusaders and he played plenty of minutes. I think it's a pretty good idea to ease him into the season.

Tilse will offer more around the park and our scrum should still be fine as the Reds aren't one of the strongest scrums in the comp.

Hopefully Robbo can come on in the second half when the Reds are tiring and do some damage in the scrum. A couple of scrum penalties could be crucial.

No Anthony Fiangaa in the 22 at all? I thought he declared himself fit for selection?
And no Samo??
Not a bad looking team though (from a Waratahs supporter, mind you......)

A Fainga'a thought he'd be right to go but it wasn't 100% and with a long season ahead, it's probably the right thing to do than re-injure it and be out longer.

Nothing on Samo as yet but maybe one of the Qlders might have heard something about how he's going?

If the Tahs can attack the set piece and pressure the Reds half backs I think they have the winning of this one

AWH had good form in the trials and then dropped after an off week. Tough call & personally don't think it was the right one.

Man this is not looking good for the Reds. If they are not the underdogs according to the bookies then it can only be because of the home ground thing. How many points can Suncorp be worth?
