All Wests v Norths games are cancelled.

There's a discussion now to play for competition points in a good ole fashion boat race ;)

I don't understand why a bit of rain stops club games, how are we ever supposed to compete with the Kiwi's if we don't learn to play in wet conditions? Protecting the grass on the field is a poor excuse, grass recovers from all kinds of abuse. When I was a kid playing in the wet was the most fun!

I totally agree with you Penguin.

This all stems from the ElNino weather condition a few years back when the infrequent rain event would cause havoc when a club would play its rugby and then not see rain (or sprinklers) for months on end leading the mud turning to a hard concrete.

But LaNina has returned, the dams are full and there will be a bit more rain on the horizon.

I personally feel rugby played on a muddy track which can then dry out gives the pitch a bit of character, similar to how the cricket folks talk about a pitch.

totally agree SouthernX the field needs a bit of character to it.

While i understand that clubs have put money into rejuvenating their fields, i don't think you can try and protect it for the rest of the year.

However i will note that todays rain is particularly heavy and west is not the best venue for spectators in the wet

I am not a greenskeeper n have no idea about how to manage a oval.

But one must think that with water restrictions now laxed that repairing a oval would be cheaper nd eAsier to repair in 2013 then it was in 2008-2009 when the drought was in full effect.

Would be interested to hear thoughts from a greenthumb though.

Damaging/destroying a root system is still a 2-3 week repair time frame if its isolated from further damage, water can only stimulate growth so much..

We talking about Rugby fields or a golf course! Easts ground held up okay after all the games. I agree with Penguin, you have to play in the rain and on wet paddocks to know how to deal with them. Have a look at 2012 Junior RWC. Shit weather, muddy grounds and we got done badly.

My thoughts from Easts vs Souths
  • Good crowd despite the weather.
  • Game was fairly dull, given the conditions both teams resorted to kicking, which I thought Souths were far superior at.
  • Tigers did well to come back and win at the death, but I think they were very lucky, Souths were probably the better team, although both showed nothing that would put them on par with the likes of Uni and Brothers.
  • Jack Mullins had a shocker, his service was poor, he got caught at the base numerous times, his kicking game was even worse. I don't know why he was the first kicking option when Brandon and Sam Cox both kicked well when they had the chance.
  • Michael Bermingham was eaten alive at scrum time. He was rotated with Parraka and Sanday throughout the match, and although the scrum was dominated throughout, it was particularly painful to watch when he was on the field. Denny and co had a field day.
  • Toby White is the best 13 in the competition by a mile......that is all.
  • The Easts hooker did well in filling Ready's shoes, and I thought the Tigers line-out was very well drilled.
Good to get the win, but it wasn't pretty, and Souths would feel disapointed not to have wrapped that game up when it was 19-7.

I couldn't stay for the Prems mate but did you catch the firsts? What an amazing turn around in the last quarter!

I agree that too many games are cancelled to preserve fields, but I think much of the "blame" lies with the organisations who own the fields & allow teams to train & play on them at their discretion. For example Uni of Qld makes money from 5A during athletics season, and their soccer team also plays games on it; the Uni is incredibly protective of their grass.

I'd imagine Bond Uni would be the same, but I'm not sure of the ownership/arrangements of other clubs re- field usage.

Bermingham has always been one to rely on his size. At junior level it was apt and he managed well as he has been a man for since the age of 16. However the games at prem level that i have seen with him in it he has struggled immensely, as he is no longer the only man on the field and size doesn't matter as much

However i thought the same about enever and stolberg and both of them have learnt how to play the game at side of using their physical gifts. So maybe the same can happen for bermo.

On the matter of White being the best 13 by a country mile? i can think of several candidates who would strongly disagree.

White is a great attacking weapon (one of the best in the comp) and can put on big shots but I think his actual reading of play in defence is poor. I have seen him been made to look silly by Luke Morahan on a few occasions over the years. Not so much missed tackles but him just standing there marking air while mozz runs past.

Kinda agree with Red Heavy, Gillespie from Wests is up there, not to mention Rex Tapuai (I know he plays 12 as well).
