Drugs in sport

I like to watch

David Codey (61)
"ANTI-DOPING authority investigators will interview 150 NRL and AFL players, staff and administrators, with the devastating scope of the investigation revealed by the government body.
It's understood that 70 to 80 players and officials could be charged with doping violations and various penalties, including the potential for lifetime bans from their code.Players who have doped themselves using substances unable to be detected by drug tests are also being targeted, with ASADA able to take action based on intelligence."

6 weeks after getting worldwide headlines, they have yet to interview anyone.

They hope to interview 31 ARL players, but by no means are all 31 under suspicion. Not quite what they originally stated is it?

Hope they got their budget increase.

BTW they make a big deal about only 10% of convictions are due to positive tests. Why do they spend 80% of their budget testing people......Fucking oxygen thieves

As was implicit in that Roy Masters column quoted above this is actually about enlarging the ACC and ASADA budget.

How secret Bombers deal came unstuck

A proposed deal between ASADA and Essendon whereby Bombers players would escape doping sanctions with zero penalty, while Cronulla players would be given a minimum six-month ban, was aborted following protests from lawyers acting for ASADA and Cronulla.

Now it would be a Black Day for Australian Sport if AFL (Essendon club) had got away with this.

Zero international credibility for all Australian Sports that have an international presence had the Mexicans got away with this.

Oh, that is right, why should a sport with zero international presence care about international credibility for Australian Athletes/Sport. "I'm all right Jack".

Have we finally got something to praise ASADA for in this whole sorry state of affairs?

You missed the bit about

It's understood that 70 to 80 players and officials could be charged with doping violations and various penalties, including the potential for lifetime bans from their code.

So are you saying that two government departments get together and dream up a scam that puts Lance Armstrong and professional cycling into insignificance, just so they can employ ten more blokes?

Not quite.
Its a completely irregular way to go about the whole process and there is evidence that that they employed an irregular process in order to extract confessions.
So they don't have enough evidence.
So what were they announcing?
Either you are prepared to draw an inference that they were actuated by improper motives or you are not.
I am.

So the spot light turns to AFL and Essenden, who by all accounts are in more poop than Colonel Custer was at Little Big Horn a wee while back.

So much for Demitriou Corp keeping a lid on the ASASA investigation and controllign the media response.

30 mungos being spoken to by ASADA is nothing. If what is being reported in the media is close to the truth then NRL sound almost like mischievious experimenting teenagers compared to the seasoned hard core nasty buggers of the AFL goings on.

Never liked James Hird - dont know why: cut of his jib I guess - but why is the coach on performance enhancing gear?

Inside Shoulder, A true gentleman helmsman will never sail with a poorly cut jib. They'll either have a properly cut and (more importantly) trimmed jib or sail just on the mainsail alone.

Like you I am somewhat bemused why a coach would be injecting himself with the same nonsense that the players are on.

The tack is too easy with non-overlapping jibs. It takes a little finesse and better crew work to tack with an overlapping jib.

Just watched 4 corners. Why is it that in an entire report, no one mentions the idea of playing less games in a season? If all of this drug use is for recovery, then why not give them enough time to recover naturally. Either enforce a rule that says players can only play in 90% of games in a normal season, or give every team a bye every 4 weeks.

Clearly there is a reason the players do this besides simply being "cheats". So why not address it? Oh right, professional sport is all about TV rights and money.

It's really hard to care about any of this when people turn it into a witch hunt rather than a well thought out response to a growing problem.

missed it, can you give a brief summary of how bad the drugs in sport thing actually is? And where it is?

maybe a media report would be a better answer than putting the onus on you, will keep my eyes out (or if bad enough it will be on talkback radio I spose)

They talked a bit about how a lot of Olympians were on some drugs in the late 80's early 90's. Then they spent a long time talking to a guy who has helped AFL players get their body to the absolute best level that doesn't fail the drug tests. And he said there are criminal gangs importing performance enhancing drugs that some people involved with NRL/AFL clubs might have been involved in.

All it seems to be is that these players want to recover as quick as possible. Because if you have a virus, and you play an AFL game, you are going to be in bed for weeks. Unless of course you talk to a docter who can push the boundaries and get you back sooner.

At the end 4 corners suggested they had evidence some AFL clubs were doing this systematically. But it was all hear-say. So don't know what to think.

At the end of the day most of the people angry at them (besides fellow competitors) are the same sort of fans who will boo their team off the field if they lose a game. Think about that for a minute.

Re the ABC 4Corners story:
1. Mention was made of clubs sending urine and blood samples (presumably without identifying the sportsman/woman) to private labs for analysis. If they came back 'positive', the player would be "rested". The interviewer asked: "what reason would you give for that player not taking the field in next weekend's game"?....Answer: "hamstring injury"!!....... Much has been said in our posts about the increasing number of hamstring injuries in Australian rugby....I'm sure we all hope this isn't a contributing factor?!
2. We learnt that sportsmen and women across many sports were involved, including jockeys, and including racehorses! .....Last night we heard of the illegal use of two anabolic steroids (ethylestranol and stanozolol) in eleven Godolphin-trained horses at Newmarket, England. Apparently, these steroids are permitted to be used in horses racing in Australia, provided the drugs are not present in race day samples!

I have always felt that Aussie Rules players were "different", but after hearing recently that they inject with calf blood and peptide extract from pig- brains, I now know why!

This whole story just gives me the strong impression of football coaches turning into racehorse trainers. Trainers have always gone out seeking the newest, most secret and way-out potions to give their steeds that "edge". The more extreme, the more wacky, the better. It's a nightmare for doping agencies because how can they keep track of all of it? Most of it isn't performance-enhancing at all - it's just snake oil. I'm sure ASADA and WADA don't want to be responsible for trying to determine whether each new "peptide", pig's brain extract or eye of newt is actually performance-enhancing - an absolute nightmare.

You're right though, racehorses can be given anabolics so long as they don't race for a certain period afterwards.

So they have retired Black Caviar out of fear that her unbeaten run will be ended by an entry from Cronulla Sharks or the Essendon Football Club.

As Cronulla kicked off to start a recent match, the ABC commentator said " And they're off, the track looks firm and fast..."
