Why? 90% of Quade's criticism has nothing to do with his defence.

I am not talking about his defense. 90% of what he is criticised for occurs in his own half at the flyhalf position. Why not use our best attacking player in attack, but get him out of the position where errors creep in (own half)?

Fact is we don't have a completed option at 10 for the wallabies but the combined attributes of JOC (James O'Connor) an QC (Quade Cooper) do make a complete 10. Why not find a way to use them like that?

I reckon the game plan the Reds play was a good one but to think you are going to run over an international side from your own line is somehwere between naive and stupid.

I'm not sure any coach of a 'dirt trackers' team playing an international team is going to inspire his charge to greatness by encouraging them to clear the ball, work the tram lines, secure the ruck and kick for position. I think the pre-game speech goes something like "have a crack boys, throw it round, stick it up em - dont let this mob bully you, and run it at em - have some fun. Give the punters something to cheer" Or maybe that's just the Australian way?

Yes I watch no rugby but Bulls rugby at all. Especially for the 20 years I lived out of SA I made sure I never ever watch a game unless the Bulls play so I really have nothing to go on. All I watch is Bulls replays.

Running around in your own half? You can have it. If Cooper had steered you out of your half you would have been a real chance.

I reckon the game plan the Reds play was a good one but to think you are going to run over an international side from your own line is somehwere between naive and stupid.

So do you think the game plan was a good one or not? Confusing.

So, did Quade do enough to convince Reds supporters that he unfit for test rugby yet? Or do we need more erratic decision making under pressure?

imo- your best option long term is Christian Lealiifano, Robbie has picked the wrong horse with O'Connor.

OK, listen up, I will say this once.
qwerty51 - please quit it with the Quade-count of errors and so on. We all get it, point has been made, move on. I agree that it is fair enough to critique a player, but the repetition has become too much, and I am sick of the shitty vibe on many of these threads involving Quade, the Reds and the Wallabies around this.
Others - accept that players can be critiqued, within the forum rules, and you might not like it.
Thanks for someone reporting all those posts while I was trying to do a match review - one would have been fine.

Move the fuck on. Everyone.

Ok so this is a thread about the game, and the game involved the reds, and the reds involved Quade so here's my take:

1) Luke Morohan congratulate yourself, brilliant game and I don't know why he was taken off?? It must've been injury or because he's part of sevens??
2) Nick Frisby showed he is a future prospect at halfback. Brilliant player and very exciting to watch. Him and QC (Quade Cooper) work well.
3) We got demolished at the set piece but not so much at the break down - Lions are quite obviously beatable with a full strength wallaby pack and we actually have the potential to dominate the break down.
4) Their only try was a scrappy one off one of our screwed up set pieces, with a disciplined Wallabies side we might be able to reduce those penalties and really shut down any attacking approach they attempt.

5) Quade - He played to the game plan he was given by McKenzie. He was not putting his team under pressure because he had 'ADD', he was playing a style of game that was specifically designed by his coach to entertain and go for points regardless of the risk involved. It was unfortunate that it started raining half way through because when the passes were sticking the reds had the Lions back peddling.

He is not a captain which I think we all knew but didn't exactly collapse under pressure. He doesn't work over the ref enough and doesn't gee up the troops like Kev. But again, this is no surprise.

Say what you want but I thought he unlocked the Lions defence quite effectively. A few missed tackles and ball bungles but that was quite common for every player on the field in those wet conditions. Overall he implemented the game plan that he had be told to and that was to run the Lions ragged. They didn't know what had hit them at the start of that game and gee was it exciting to watch.

Again, he didn't play the style that Deans wanted and thus I don't think we will see him get selected - rightly or wrongly. However, I thought the game showed that the idea that exciting, running and high risk rugby cannot be implemented at test level is not true. Even in the rain the reds threatened the Lions and with a goal kicker and full strength forward pack, I reckon they would've beaten them. Funnily enough, the wallabies have goal kickers and an awesome forward pack ;)

Anyway, that's my take on the game and yes, my man crush, Quade. Ready for the replies!

Fuck I enjoyed the shit out of that. That game plan is the one that can beat these Lions. They are technically superb, they can't be beat they way the Wobs have played in recent years.

Our full team, that game plan, the result could well have gone our way.

Quade, Luke, Nick, beau and ed played awesome. Hard to really pick them out considering the whole team really turned it in.

Loved the running game. Hope we keep it going in 2014.

Well, anyone feel free to extrapolate my words to any of the situations where certain individuals are repeatedly critiqued. If it's civil, and has some basis, it's fair game, but repeating the same thing 100 times is plain tedious.

The reds could hardly play from set-piece to set-piece. Their scrum and line out were always going to struggle against the lions, esp with the wallaby reds out.

The wallabies hopefully won't have quite the same handicap.

But.

We may actually need to engineer a try or two. They're going to turn every kickable penalty into points.

I'll leave Quade aside, but I covered him in my match report on the front page.
Morahan - yep, very good, and pleasing for me was not his try, but his defence on a few occasions, which has been a question mark before.
Frisby - very busy, but got a bit lost a few times. I disagree that he worked really well with Cooper, but he suffers from comparison with Genia in that. Definitely exciting. Great try.
Reds breakdown work was very good - solid defence there and good counter-rucking too.
Yeah, their try was off scrappy set piece, but their counter-attack was very good too. North, Bowe shredded the Reds up the middle, and the Lions went very close to 2 more tries.
If the Wallabies hope to out-manouevre the Lions in a game of chess, we'll get spanked - their set piece is going to be really good. We just have to hit the breakdown hard, and use width sensibly. Fast, long passing and some well judged kick-passes tonight showed something there. Especially with the Lions coming up fast in the narrow defence channels (very fast at times, maybe too fast!!).

Scary that they have not missed a goal kick yet on Tour. At all. The Wallabies statistically start every match 6-8 points down, based on that. Worrying.

The boys tonight played for the Reds.
Hope Deans took note on how to beat the Lions, It call attacking Rugby. And not miss a goal kick..Glade cooper didnt kick from his own try line and took the ball forward and trust his piggies will get there and they did

And if that the 2nd best team in QLD and they do that to the lion. Future of QLD rugby in looking damn Fine...

my only negative on the game was Lucas not starting at Scrum Half
And Harris what the fuck Dude, he will be piss off with him self for a good week.

Do you think that warrants for a more attacking game plan? Whether that includes Quade or not, it doesn't matter. But surely we need to realise this will require tries, not penalties to win??

Great review btw. Great to have an objective view on the polariser's performance. I do believe he showed he can unlock the Lions defence though.

Edit: Reds did a favour to the Wallabies in terms of knocking off a few big names as well. Never wish anyone to get injured but just through the intensity of the game they damaged the Lions squad a bit I reckon.

Loved the Reds committment tonight. Force lesson to be learnt from the Qld'ers. That game was there to win for the Reds. A full strength team could probably have done them. If the Lions are pushed in all of there next lead up games the Wallabies will be fresh and ready to pounce. Well done Reds, a very enjoyable and entertaining game to watch this arvo.
