Mowen Considering Move To France Over Pay Dispute

In a country where depth is a problem, this issue needs to be sorted out pretty quickly.

If it is a case of highlighting the inequality of higher payments to some who have been around for 5 minutes then perhaps the ARU should address it accordingly.

What's there to sort out. The pool is limited. Depth simply has to suffer. The money is only there for the top players in their positions. ARU doesn't have any more money to widen it unfortunately.

Mowen on current form is not in the first choice backrow. If Fardy stays at 6 i'd argue he would not even make the bench as he could not be considered an impact player.

Then why did you bring Palu into the comparison (post #6)?
Im saying I don't understand how someone could think Palu is better then Mowen or anyone else for that matter. I then said this probably isn't the best thread to actually argue about Palu. I used him as an example and someone who is currently useless (and had been useless
For a long time ) getting a top up while Mowen doesn't.

It is interesting, Mowen would be battling for the 6 spot with Palu and Higgers fit, now he is hitting the papers to create pressure for more cash.

Exactly, first move to apply the pressure is to get the media talking and have readers thinking it's a 'broader' issue - that builds public sympathy. And it's not bad timing for Mowen given he has been a mainstay in the Wallabies this year, fill in captain etc, so I say well done to him and his manager for this move during the negotiations.

Palu has still played better at number 8 in his three tests this season athan Mowen has in any of the five tests he has played at number 8.

I agree completely that Palu isn't as good as he used to be, but this is a position that the Wallabies are struggling with.

Neither Higginbotham nor Mowen have played a strong test at number 8.

Higgers had a great super rugby season and is in form. The last time Palu played he was not even close to as good as Higgers

Well, the last time they played a test together Higginbotham got himself knocked out after 15 minutes and went off. Palu played 80 minutes.

Higgers did have a great Super Rugby season and then got injured and hasn't played a test all year. Palu has only played three, but it is three more than Higginbotham.

Higginbotham still hasn't played a strong test in the games where he's had to play at number 8. I would bet that he will next year if fit because he certainly had by far his best Super Rugby season in 2013 at number 8 prior to injury.

Most posts here have valid points.

If he is that valuable to the Brumbies they are allowed to pay more.

The ARU tends to work in arrears. Once, and IF he becomes a regular test player (once evryone back from injury) the ARU will probably offer a top-up.

He is in no position to bargain hard. If spits dummy like his old boss then seeyalaterbenny

I just don't get the Palu love. I would start Ben mc at 8 before Palu

He was excellent off the bench on Saturday and I would start him this weekend (move Mowen to 6 and Fardy to replace Simmons at lock).

I think you'd have struggled to find half a dozen people who thought that McCalman should have been our starting number 8 against the Lions though. He was missing for most of last season due to injury as well.

He has rocketed back into form but he has been a much maligned player in Australian rugby.

He's probably similarly unpopular as Palu.

The average Australian rugby punter doesn't like either of them.

I don't think it is Palu love as much as it is a reflection that no one else has been at all effective for the Wallabies at number 8 in the last few years.

Don't rate Mowen as either a Captain or a Back Rower.

His primary focus is on self.

I don't care if this is a professional game....the Wallabies need a Captain for whom the other players will walk into battle...one who will be beside them on the same walk!! The last Captain we had like this is in the photo to on the left.

Currently we don't have one and Mowen isn't it!

PS The over-the-top payments to Cooper (>$700k) and Folau (>$400k) totally unwarranted and would always lead the ARU into trouble with SOME players. Others in the squad would play for the honour of representing Australia and in recognition of the efforts of those that have gone before.

I see Mowen as a 6 in test company, his only decent tests this season were there versus the Lions and Palu was 8

Start him in front of Palu? Not in a side needing go forward, start him @ 8 in front of Higgers - nup

I thought the big Brumbies bopper would have been in contention by now.

Why?

Did he actually do enough to suggest he deserves to be starting again?

I don't think so....
Well you should look again. First half 23-3 second half 5-5. First half kicked everything back to them second half played rugby.

He struggled to be anything more than an impact player for the Brumbies. He was really effective in a 20 minute run in the second half but very average as a starting player.

Unless he is excellent next season I highly doubt he will ever play for the Wallabies.
