I was in Fiji over the weekend and there was a story in the paper about Fiji being in with a shot of hosting a leg of the IRB tour. Would be interesting if it was to fill the spot of the South America leg that never happened or take over from another tournament in the area, if the second option then an Australian leg may be in trouble.

The IRB Series will stay at 9 teams this year, and possibly go to 10 teams with Argentina next season. No other stops will be added until after the Olympic qualifying season of 2014/15. But the series could undergo drastic changes in 2015/16.

Fiji is bidding to host an IRB stop. So is Kenya, Wales and Singapore, and probably a few others. Australia will most likely not lose their stop, however it is probable that the Gold Coast will lose it if low attendance continues.

I first heard that the Australia leg was moving to February to pair with the NZ leg (for player welfare reasons, and it is a logical pairing). That was part of the rationale behind moving the USA leg to 24-26 of January in order to pair with Argentina in mid-January starting next season.

Now I hear that Fiji may be paired with the Aussie leg and remain in October. But Fiji may also pair with Singapore in late Oct/early Nov to start the season.

Scotland will likely lose their stop due to even lower attendance than GC.

Ideally:
Fiji-Singapore in Oct/Nov
Dubai-South Africa in Nov-Dec (maybe Kenya as a third)
Argentina-USA in Jan
NZ-Aus in Feb
Japan-Hong Kong in Mar
Possibly a new leg within Europe (France, Russia, Germany, Spain) and Kenya in Apr
London-?? (Probably Wales, but maybe Euro) in May

I'm sure a leg in the south of France would attract a few people through the gate.

Very interesting move from Fiji Rugby
Ben Ryan Appointed Digicel Fiji 7s Head Coach
The Fiji Rugby Union has today announced the appointment of Ben Ryan as the new Digicel Fiji 7s Head Coach.
Ryan accepted the offer after the FRU board contacted him last night.
There will be a transition period of one month in England for Ryan and he is expected to be in the country for the Fiji Water Centennial International 7s next month. Ryan will also take the team for the first leg of the 2013/2014 IRB World 7s Series at the Gold Coast in Australia.

Full Press release here on Fiji Rugby Web site.

Ryan seems like a very astute coach. This could either be an absolute masterstroke, or it could be a total disaster.

It all depends on how well, and how quickly, he can understand the local rugby culture, and whether he is fully supported by all factions.

Fiji is the world's epicentre of Sevens rugby, if Ryan turns out to be an effective national coach they will win everything in sight.

I was interested to hear radio advertising the Sevens in Sydney Prime Time and also on Saturday during a league show on Triple M. Obvioulsly the sunday rugby show, 'The Ruck' has been advertising it and I saw an ad on Fox Sports as well. ( I'm in Sydney).
I do wonder due to the fact that there were no AFL and NRL finals at all in QLD whether there is will be demand for live sport in QLD and we'll see a few more punters go this year.
Any idea how numbers are tracking?

Fire up lads.

This tournament starts tomorrow. The Coast should be rocking.

Fiji coached by Ben Ryan. All will be revealed - World domination or total disaster.

Another shocker of a uniform from the Soap Dodgers?

Will our Thunderbolts be playing in Council Worker Dayglo Yellow, or GOLD?

Fortunately it looks as though the weather will be pretty good, not too hot.

Two days of 35+ temperatures and high humidity would have been diabolical. This is always the risk any time between September and March in SE Queensland.

Wouldn't surprise me if we see the World Series move to a 12 tournament format post Olympics. Another interesting one would be Sri Lanka who are keen on a leg as well.

WTF is it with us and the bloody Single Malts?

21 all draw after leading 21-0 with 5 minutes to go, and 21-14 with the ball in hand and 4 seconds to go.

Gonna be tough to progress as top qualifier from the pool with a Draw in game 1.

I'm going to save my rant until after the other pool matches just in case the Aussies exceed my expectations.

Johnny Moonlight scores for Canada, now that's a great name.

When has Wales' colours been black and Fluro green?

The crowd is very vocal but on the TV it looks rather sparse.

Why does no one go along?

Is the timing of this event wrong?

Is it in the wrong place? They would get 78000 to the MCG for the world tiddlywinks finals.

Has it been advertised properly?

Empty stands is not a good advert for the game.

The good news is that we now play Kenya in the Quarter Finals, and Samoa face NZL.

Still a hard row to hoe.
