I think I should just make it clear, that I am with you in not supporting Scots' bursary programme with clear irregularities being shown, but I do think it being blown out of proportion. So, I suppose our positions are not polar opposites.

In one way or another this day has been coming since the end of season 2013 - it came differently from how I expected it.
Everyone seems to agree its bad for the game.
I'm hoping longterm benefit for Oz rugby is the result.
The inertia of the GPS is not to be underestimated.

Fair point, I'm trying to say that if so many are handed out why should talented sportsmen be excluded? Providing the meet the criteria and they apply rather than being approached as some people suggest. I don't think any school, even shore, would turn down a suitable candidate on the basis they are TOO GOOD AT SPORT

Agree - up to a point which does not present require elaboration.
This is not that situation as I have seen and heard it.
Some would be offended at the "even shore" - but not me!

I think you will find that Scots encourages good rugby players to attend the school, actively seeking them out at junior championships etc, and giving financial assistance to many of those good players. In contrast, Shore accepts all boys in order of application (I think with some adjustments for sons of Old Boys and staff) without any criteria other than the ability to pay! There is no scouting from Shore.
Let's not forget TSC has form in Basketball re importing a team of schoolboy champions.

For sure. I miss the days of a close Scots XV win or loss. I'm shore some angry old boys will be onto me before long!!

I would like to hear some solid sources on that front but in terms of Basketball that was out of hand but glad to see it quickly readjusting

The 1st & 2nd XV are viewed as one squad and subject to the same training requirements. Thus if the 5/8 in question or any other player is not willing to commit then their only option is to play 3rds. There have been 1-2 players in such a position over the last few years, although none with the pedigree of said 5/8 if it's who I think it is.

Well for a start, Advanced English is compulsory for all students, which creates a 50% bigger tail to any other GPS school, which, of course, reflects poorly in the papers.

That's just a ridiculous approach to education.

If the main issue about Scot's is the scholarships/ bursaries and creating the super team why does no one comment on the fact that Newington has just as many scholarship/bursary boys in their 1st XV team as well

TSC will have done a statistical analysis of past HSC results which shows that candidates who do Advanced English perform better across all subjects than those who study English at a lower level.
They may have not gone further to see if the better results were a matter of causation or simple correlation.

There's been plenty of comment directed at Newington over the past 2-3 years on this thread.

If the current NC firsts are full of scholarship holders it isn't apparent. Their 16As and 2nds were both weak last year as well.

If you don't think that Newington copped criticism on this thread over that rugby team, you need to go back and read this thread more deeply.

I'd be surprised if any other non-selective school in the state had the same policy.
