does anyone know much about Matt? i know he won premierships with leicester and Leinster but he was just sacked by Leinster wasnt he? obviously hes a huge step up from RG but is he the right guy? im not saying hes not i just dont know enough about him.

Ditto. What do we know? Departure from Leinster looks professional but disgruntled. He has a few championships to his name which is good.

Is he likely to re-open the Quade files?

@TSR, I hope so mate. At least the Leinster fan complaints were that he only had one strategy/game play. Which puts us way ahead of RG.

Care to give us the list of coaches who have stood there when their jobs were on the line and said all failures were their own fault?

In fact let's extend that to any working professionals.

Be realistic with your expectations.

RG at the end of last year said it was his fault that our Defence was so poor. unfortunately his reasons why was that he was said he was focusing too much on attack where we was just as hopeless.

It mightn't be the norm TWAS but yes on both counts. But you misdirect my wants. "ALL FAILURES were their own fault." Not required. A little humility and ownership, otoh. It's hardly to be unexpected that a Reds fan is concerned about that sort of rep from the fans of the guys last team.

At any rate, I'm not writing him off. That's me being realistic. Doesn't stop me being concerned.

what more credence do you need? It's been reported basically everywhere that he wants out of Ireland and wants to come back and play for the Reds. The issue is his current contract.

Whomever coaches the Reds doesn't really change that.

How open is the process of appointing a coach ever really going to be?

I do share a lot of the concerns regarding the current administrations lack of due process and due consideration over a number of decisions over the last few years. If other people have genuine insight into whether there was a satisfactory process followed prior to this appointment,I would love to be enlightened.

But I am mindful - change HAD to happen
- no appointment, regardless of credentials, is guaranteed to be a success
- the list of available candidates was likely to be reduced by the number who either had already committed elsewhere or weren't going to be available until after the World Cup, which didn't suit what the Reds needed
- I see the appointment of Damien Marsh as being highly supportive of superior results next year. I am also optimist that the appointments of Thorn & Stiles will prove to be positive
- if memory serves me correctly both Link & Cheika were sacked from their last coaching positions prior to moving to coach Qld/NSW respectively

The other big determinant to success is cattle - hopefully having clarity around the HC position will help recruit/retain the talent we need.

I'd argue that the success of 2011 was built on the losing pretty of 2009. Without that backline developed during that losing pretty time 2011 wouldn't have happened. How you play is more important than the results IMO. Just look at the Tahs, made the finals or there abouts playing and winning ugly and killed their supporter base doing it.
