Seems to be a lot talk both here and on the train from Kiwis that the ABs were off their game.
I think that underestimates the extent to which we got in their faces.
They had real trouble making the gain line reliably and we all know what that does to structure.
Pretty impressive performance, not least because it was by no means a perfect game from us and because blokes whose positions were seriously in question - the ring ins in particular - staked legitimate claims for inclusion in RWC 2015.
Amusing/interesting to see how just a short time at 9 seemed to have Gits needing urgent hammy attention when he was subbed: we underestimate just how much work the 9's are doing, I reckon.

Quite a few votes for Folau over in that thread.
NZ turned him over twice in contact to my naked eye: that's not good enough from a guy in his position - be that hero or top earner

Funny you mention that. I missed the Aus anthem but I saw the NZ anthem and thought McCaw, Read and a few others were totally disconnected.

Do they often do this and just save their energy for the haka?
Talking the Anthem. Am I going mad or is that the first time the coaching staff went out and stood with the team to sing. Did anyone else notice the intensity with which they all sang. I loved it.

  1. (protection from referees when in the air. Teams are clearly practising the "look at me trying to compete, colliding with Izzy's legs was just an accident".
  2. Yeah this is getting ridiculous. They're not tackling him but making zero attempt to catch it and just jump where he is to put him off balance. It's pretty dangerous and World Rugby should do something about it.

While not advocating wiping people out in air, what I think is happening now days is everyone leaps in the air to catch ball whether they need to or not, and so we are slowly getting to point where if someone claims they are going for ball, opposition are having to not actually go anywhere near him, it worries me, and while I know everyone wants players protected in the air, if we want players to really compete for every ball, perhaps WR (World Rugby) has to say it is too dangerous to jump and everyone has to keep feet on ground? Ridiculous I know, but so is saying as soon as someone is in air no one else can jump etc. And I don't think this just for Izzy, but players all over the place leap in the air when not required, and suspect this is so they get plenty of space with the ball.

Magnificent game of rugby, well worth the price of admission. All Blacks are high quality and played a high skill, high speed game. We stuck with them, competed at every aspect and beat them deservedly so. The Hooper and Pocock experiment worked. Phipps probably our worst. Big improvement in the attack when To'omua came on - I think he might be the answer at 10.

The fact that we won also gives me the chance to say how poor Barnes was - ABs walked around the first few scrums but no penalty until the 3rd or 4th time they did it. If roles were reversed any hint of a Wallaby scrum not staying straight under pressure brings an immediate penalty. And I hope the refs don't wreck RWC with a card-a-thon.

Other thing is, I a bit surprised people ripping into Mumm, I was surprised he got in team, but thought he went well last night.Like I said I tended to be a critic of his (and Horwill), but thought Wallabies second row went well, as did whole pack. One thing I was right on though ,is my assertion that Moore is the right choice as captain, like his whole attitude to rugby, and something I think Wallabies have missed last year or so.
On the ABs, I was disappointed with SBW as I said in earlier post, also wasn't overly impressed with Romano's game, and am confident we'll see the Whitelock/Retallick combo again next week. Apart from that Nonu will probably be right and not sure we'll see to many more changes, as I suspect Shag will be thinking about starting to bed in combos for WC.

Our back row was almost as good as my seats.
Amazing game. Full credit to the boys. Gave 110%.

I can't speak for others, but I gave him votes because of his metres made, tackle busts and linebreak creates, irrespective of the fact that he is a fullback. Was a handful for the ABs defence

Right, let's get stuck into Phipps. What a shocker. We should start the Brumbies inside backs and be done with it.

A great win, but lots of room for improvement (and that is a good thing)

We won through grit and persistence rather than finesse.

I haven't seen a side get so deep on attack for a long time (and win), we were so far behind the advantage line
