The new Wallaby jersey

I couldn't help but notice that the French away jersey is red (France v Italy match).

So it would seem that it's not an IRB/WR (World Rugby) directive that the alternate strip be white. Which again begs the question; why is the Wallaby alternate strip white instead of green?

why is the Wallaby alternate strip white instead of green?

Some ideas:

1- Because green is the South African colour, one of the biggest rival in rugby for Australia

2- Because the ARU is run by diehard Rugby supporters who hate NRL/League/Kangaroos

3- Because they have not idea about marketing.

My pick is the #3

You lose a BIG market if you don't sell an away jersey. Look at the ABs, Boks or even the Pumas. The Wallabies haven't an away jersey, they just make one for the WCs because is required. The others rugby nations make a new away jersey every year, maybe they only wear the jersey by 1 or 2 games and then sell thousands of those.

The Wallabies need an away jersey, if is green you can sell thousands among League supporters. ARU need money and the markering is so important

I think from a marketing viewpoint a white shirt/jersey is seen as something that the punters might normally wear, i.e. they might want to throw it on the top of of pair of jeans as something approaching normal attire, whereas they might only wear the home jersey for a specific purpose such as going to a match, which is I think why so many away jerseys across sports are white.

They think they can sell more is the bottom line.

Agree. And I've yet to see anyone wearing a white Wallabies jersey - I'd suggest because most people don't consider white to be an Australian colour.

My guess is that because the only prospect of it being worn is if we meet Romania in the finals they did want to expend any resources on it.

I think you're overestimating how many away jerseys they'd be likely to sell.

I can't imagine having a green one rather than a white one would make much difference at all.

I have a green Canterbury training jersey from around 2006 or 07 that I still wear & it looks pretty good actually.

But as far as these Away jerseys go, I can't even find one in the shops. Only seen them online and would prefer to whack it on to check if it looked rubbish before handing over $160.

I have seen the Wallaby away jersey at the Asics store in Sydney. It's OK on the hanger not sure how it would look on.

I don't know, the Wallabies are a reasonably good brand (or so we're constantly told) and I think a green away strip would sell quite well. Every NRL team has an away strip which is sells quite well and they generally also have one or two special ones which also sell out quite quickly. (some even have super hero ones)

Both the Waratahs and Reds manage to have decent away strips, and again they seem to sell quite well.

It strikes me as being marketing 101.

A good mate of mine is reasonably big in sports marketing and he is constantly puzzled when dealing with the ARU.

I think you don't understand the point. The ARU have not an away jersey ATM. They made one for the WC because is a law but after the WC they will remain only with a home jersey as usual.

That's the first step, make an away jersey for every season, not just for the WCs. Look at South Africa. They wore against the Argies in Buenos Aires their away jersey. The Pumas don't wear a green jersey. Why they wore an away jersey in Argentina? Just for marketing, just for money.

The NZRU did the same with their away jersey. Even The Pumas, they usually wear their away jersey in Australia, they don't need wear it because the Wallabies jersey is yellow but they wear it for marketing.

I'm not talking about a HUGE investment, every nation has an away jersey. Even Tonga or Samoa. Make an advert with Israel Folau wearing a green away jersey and you can sell hundreds/thousands among League supporters.

Of course, isn't the salvation but is a step forward. Little things make a different. The risk is low and the gain could be high.

No need to wait to face Romania (yellow vs yellow) to wear an away jersey. Look at the Boks in Buenos Aires and the Pumas in Australia. It's a smart marketing move IMO

It's just a marketing move. Marketing = Money. Look at the NZRU:

The ARU need to improve their marketing department. I can't believe this. They don't sell away jerseys (Just for the WC) while everybody do it! Even tiny islands like Tonga!!!!:eek::eek:

From a design point of view............

Having a white jersey is far more visually appealing than a green jersey with green shorts and green socks.................

Yeah, and the Springboks wore a white jersey against Argies. And the Pumas wore a blue jersey against Wallabies. It's just a marketing move, you don't need to wait to face Romania to wear an away jersey.

I mean, the rugby jerseys is a HUGE market around the world. The brands earn a lot of money, for that reason they make new jerseys every season. You can't get out ot that business. It's a low risk business

The ABs wear a white jersey with black shorts and black socks as their away jersey. It's equal, the same home shorts with the away jersey. In the case of Australia you can change the green socks by yellow socks. That will be attractive for League supporters because will be similar than the Kangaroos kit. Is the market to which the ARU should aim because the NRL supporters are very similar than the Union supporters. In fact I know many League supporters who support the Wallabies but don't support Super Rugby/NRC or whatever.

The AFL market is harder because Victoria is a different world, but among League supporters are many ex Union supporters or people who have an idea about Union.

^^^You don't even need to go to other codes or even overseas. The Waratahs have marketed an away jersey for at least the last 5 years and it sells well. My son has about 3 of them. As the home jersey is pretty much the same every year, it's the away jersey which actually hasa more marketing potential because you can make more little changes.

Note Waratah away jerseys:
