Lots of positives both sides. Definitely proved they were best of the group. Wales seems to have gone into meltdown at prospect of meeting nz and sa. Madness in my view. I'd hate to go out vs Ireland France or Argentina. I'm happy at prospect of Australia going to that part of the draw

You mistake what I meant. If we say that was deliberate then it's one of the few instances where what he tried to do and what happened actually coincide. I think you're giving him too much credit by saying that was deliberate

Wales put were relentless but not organised enough to cross the line... Great match, I thought 1 often big welsh backs would cross but they just didn't support each other enough...
Wallabies D was EPIC, honestly the lads must be absolutely exhausted...
Well done guys early showed the new Wallabies...
I thought Fardy, Sio and Pocock, Giteau saved that one... The finishers were excellent too...

Foley's kicking has definitely improved, it's just a shame Bernie hasn't got Foley's passing from left to right better. That push-league pass he did to no-one sent shivers down my spine.

I went to bed after the game last night reflecting on the fact that had i proposed at the start of the RWC that the games against Eng & Wales would depend on the accuracy and reliability of Foley's place kicks, I suspect I would have been ridiculed!

Funny how things turn out. I think thats 38 points off the boot for him in those 2 games!

Looking forward to the Scotland game now, will be home to watch the finals so will have to get my alarm clock sorted out!

Better option. We were up by a score anyway and missing meant we retained possession inside their half as opposed to kicking it and then Wales possibly getting possession with good territory off the kick off.

Seen it happen before and given we kept the ball until the end I think it was the right call, just intrigued if it was actually on purpose.

Well if he did intend to miss it would be a stupid thing to admit as it would not be the most sporting thing to own up to. That said, with very little time on the clock and already having a 9 point buffer, it could be argued that eating up another minute or two, missing the shot and putting it dead, only to receive the ball back from a dropout would not be such a bad result. Wales were never going to have enough time to score twice at that point and we were able to stay at the right end of the paddock. All that said, I don't think he missed on purpose, but there is a rationale there if you want to find one I guess.

For mine, it seems a poor judgement of Foley's character (not by you) to even suggest he would. I'm frankly surprised it has been suggested.

Bloody great game, and so to the idiots who were on here in earlier threads laughing at NH teams needing penalty kicks to win tests and saying they were boring because of it.That was 2 teams playing bloody good rugby, because stella defence is a large part of great rugby!!

I asked this question in the Italy vs Ireland thread during that game, and have to ask it again since it hasn't been tackled and is all the more relevant.

Could someone explain these mauls to me? @15:40 Ireland hold the Italian player up in the tackle: a maul is called. The arriving Italian forwards drive them back at a rate of knots before the Irish players fall over, dragging the whole thing down. Penalty against Italy for collapsing the maul. How? It was the Irish players who lost their footing and brought it down. How exactly are you meant to get out of that kind of maul legally, or can't you?

Is there actually a way to escape a choke tackle legally once it has turned into a maul, short of somehow slipping the ball loose? Because if there isn't then why the hell don't we use it?
