Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I'm not sure how the selling of online content works now that Foxtel are increasingly pushing into this field, no doubt they will fight to retain the exclusive rights of online content to protect their FoxtelGo product.

Foxtel saw this coming when they started bringing in their pricing to something slightly less that fucked-in-the-head.

But they're still going to get pooched when someone like SANZAR decides to follow the NFL market and look elsewhere for their rights money. Australia already got a boost out of the last deal due to European money, for example.

So who is to say that an organisation like the NFL decides to bankroll a shitload of cash into rugby, not only boosting options for customers here, but also their own foot in the door as rugby becomes an Olympic sport.

Carefully managed, the NFL could become a major partner in US Rugby

I wonder if the truly global nature of union is going to give us an advantage?
"Foxtel's $500 million advertising business MCN has warned that sports rights costs are "almost becoming untenable for broadcasters and advertisers" as the pay television giant's shareholder Telstra said there will be "no open chequebook" in forthcoming negotiations with the NRL and AFL."

Big news:

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/bus...4c52eeafb?sv=8519b2f22bad01505aa6550e492a4cd4

to be announced tomorrow

The Australian Rugby Union has clinched a record $250 million five year broadcast rights deal that will see a Super Rugby match on free-to-air television for the first time.

The ARU will reap about $50 million in annual income, up from about $25m under the current deal. It is much bigger increase than the $200 million suggested by reports earlier this year.

Ten will show a full replay of one Super Rugby match per round each Sunday morning for the first time in the history of the competition. The match will air between 8am and 11am complimented by a one-hour Super Rugby highlights show each Monday night

Does that include the additional money from the UK and French broadcasters, and the relative strength of the US$, which all the negotiations seem to be done in?

Meh, FTA but really what's the point of a replay on a Sunday at 8am. Needed a live Friday/Saturday game.

I'd say it's probably in AUD.

The ARU have declared between $25 - $28 million in broadcasting revenue over the normal years of this TV deal (much more in the Lions year).

Looking back over the previous deals I saw this little gem - hopefully get a better result this time.

O'Neill said he was also delighted that a weekly highlights package for Super Rugby would be shown on free-to-air television.

"It is comforting to know that on top of the comprehensive coverage provided by Fox Sports, with every match shown live, we will also have free-to-air reach for Super Rugby through a weekly highlights package on (Channel) Nine."

Good news from the ARU, but it's a bit lame that the most FTA coverage Channel 10 would invest in was a Sunday morning replay.

It's probably all Foxtel were willing to give away. One of the couple of prime time Friday/Saturday night Aussie games they have each week are where the bulk of their value lies.

My guess is that the FTA Sunday morning game didn't really impact the overall deal that much. Channel 10 wouldn't pay a huge amount for it and Foxtel wouldn't pay much less to let Channel 10 show it. If anything it could be beneficial for Foxtel for giving more people a taste of Super Rugby.

There's also the fact Foxtel owns part of Channel 10.

Overall though it's great news for the ARU.

Sad truth is that super rugby doesn't rate enough for a FTA network to allocate prime time coverage to any of the games. They can see the numbers on Foxtel - they're not good enough.

Even the Wallaby games (excluding Bledisloe) barely pay their way - the game agaisnt Argentina at the Gold Coast a couple of years ago delivered 10 their lowest ever Saturday night rating. Imagine what a Force v south African team would do (and I only pick them as they are the lowest rating team in oz)

Waratahs vs other Aus side attracted 200k on avg on Friday or Saturday night didn't it? It's more than A-league games.

nowhere close to that. Only 3 regular season games all year >100k.

Edit - just had a look at the numbers. Tahs v Aus teams averaged 90k.

I think some matches would rate okay at prime time on FTA but they'd be the games Fox would least want to give up or simulcast (eg Waratahs vs Reds). Though personally I think Fox would actually benefit from even just a handful of marquee games a year being simulcast live on FTA.

The figures don’t actually back it up. Average crowds are still below Super Rugby’s attendances and TV ratings are too. Big derbies in Super Rugby get more than 200,000 viewers on Fox but a few weeks back two Saturday night games — one featuring Melbourne Victory and another with Sydney FC — both failed to get 50,000 viewers.
