^^I hope so, but I see no tangle benefit other than the dust settling.

I was a little taken aback when it was reported that the ACT Government was aware and assisting with the resolution of outstanding issues around the alliance agreement and it was un-finalised 3 years after it commenced.

The individuals were most likely representing the best interests of their respective organisations (of which the details around some of the issue is allegedly in the suppressed KPMG report).

It was inevitable the Brumbies would have to settle with whatever UC and the ACT Government wanted after pre-paying rent and having no binding agreement to protect themselves and no money or option to go elsewhere.

The agreement serves little purpose than bind the Brumbies to UC's whim as they have no capital or investment and are now fundamentally dependent on the ACT Governments decisions as are UC in part.

In respect of the SANZAAR linked issues, the agreement actually significantly limits the growth and investment future of the Brumbies which is another consideration going forward. If the Brumbies were offered free premises anytime within the 30 years agreement period, would they get any of the "pre-paid" rent back or is it more dead loss?

At some point the pre-paid rent, and financial attributes around it will come under scrutiny as the Brumbies have never had sufficient funds to pre-pay 30 years of rent in advance.

Hello GAGRLanders,

I am not trying to cause trouble and I am currently in shock. I have heard, albeit unsubstantiated, news that the decision has been made and the Brumbies will be axed. Probable announcement after the Wallabies test in Canberra.

I raise it as a devoted Brumbies and John I Dent fan.

These are what I believe the reasons are for the decision and reiterate this is my opinion:
  1. Reds and Waratahs are untouchable from audience perspective
  2. Rebels private equity makes it too complicated
  3. Force footprint and 9:30 broadcast slot is too valuable
  4. Brumbies maladministration
I admit this is unconfirmed. And I apologise in advance if this gets people into trouble as it’s not my intent. I just feel it’s important enough for those more connected than I to try and get the facts. The ramifications for Australian and ACT Rugby are too significant.

Regretfully,
RC

What is your source for this? As far as I am aware the SANZAAR meeting is in London on Friday, and probably hasn't started yet die to time difference.
With no disrespect to you, I simply do no beleive that dicision can seriously be made.

Without trying to get people into trouble, the source is from inside rugby administration.

I'm sorry. I will pretend I didn't hear it. All I ask, if this does come to pass, people don't complain that they didn't know or that it's unfair.

If I'm wrong, I'm just a conspiracy nut. If I'm right, maybe there's time to do something. Although unlikely.

You're right that SANZAAR hasn't met yet but a decision to axe any Australian team is the ARU's and would have to be made before the meeting. The sacrifice may give them leverage for other issues with SANZAAR.

Can please not post unsubstantiated crap like this? No one has any clue what's going to happen.

I hope I'm wrong, and as the topic so offends you I will not discuss it again until any decision has been announced.

Sorry mate but i rekon it's bollucks. SANZAAR have not even made the decision to axe a team yet. Do you think the ARU are going to say that the Brumbies are first in line to go when there may not be any need to cut a team at all? Say no team is axed, how do you rekon ARU-Brumbies relations would be after that?
Complete rubbish
Go the Brumbies

It's not though, certainly not during this broadcast agreement.

I am also pretty sure that in the way the ARU is set up (when it went from being representatives of the various state unions to a proper national body), the original Super Rugby teams have more rights to their Super Rugby license than the Force and Rebels.

I would wait and see. I would be very surprised if the ARU's preferred position was to lose a team.

IF an Australia team gets axed, what model does Super Rugby run under? 5 teams, 3 conferences with the Argies in the Aussie conference?

I honestly don't think a team dropping is likely, nor do I think expansion is the real cause of Super Rugby's plights. The format is the issue. Find a better format for the same teams.

Michael Thompson:

“We’re the most successful Australian team, we’ve been in the finals the last four years, we’re developing a lot of Wallabies, we’re developing a lot of high level coaches and we’re financially viable,” Thompson thumped.

“We have no intention of going anywhere.”

It would be a sad day in Australian rugby for the Brumbies to be pissed off altogether or "relocated" to Melbourne.

The brand would die with the move, a little like in AFL when Fitzroy relocated to Brisbane so many years ago. (I think the only remaining association with Fitzroy is a big pussy cat on the jersey)

It wouldn't surprise me one bit that the ARU may have voluntarily come to that decision prior to the meeting.

If that occurs it is a real shame for Brumby supporters.

The only positive that I can see is that the four (4) remaining clubs would be strengthened.

“We have no intention of going anywhere.”

Nice sentiment but not convinced it's their decision.

we’re developing a lot of Wallabies

Over the last 5 years the Brumbies have produced more Wallabies (debutants) than any other team.

15 - Brumbies
11 - Waratahs
10 - Reds
8 - Rebels
6 - Force

As for home grown (home schooled) talent from that lot though I think it's a little different:

Brumbies - 0 from 15
Waratahs - 9 from 11 (not counting Izzy and Taqele)
Reds - 8 from 10 (not Leroy nor Mike Harris)
Rebels - 1 from 8 (I'm including Sefa who came after school but came through club program)
Force - 2 from 6 (Godwin and DHP)

In that case would you not also include Nic White for the Brumbies who came up through the John I Dent Cup after school (granted, he was also Aus U20's)?

But yes, I would agree that the diminished numbers in local test representation is not a good look, and I feel that the dwindling quality of the John I Dent Cup (the Shute Shield poaching heavily) prior to Jake White's arrival and the NRC is partly responsible for that.

The resurgent numbers of local players in the Brumbies right now is hopefully a sign of better representation going forward.

Right now, Powell looks like he'll be capped in the near future.

think he went to school in NSW and was then signed by the Brumbies? Only played John Dent because he was signed by them? I think Sefa came over, played club and earned a contract that way.

Do you live in Fitzroy's catchment area? Because I do, and I can tell you that's not true.

He did. Came over from Fiji on the "island breeze program", run out of Box Hill Rugby Club. His superb form at club level, where he helped the Broncos go from cellar dwellers to grand finalists, earned his a Rising jersey. The rest is history.

Box Hill was also the original home for Lloyd Johanssen before he moved to TSS at around 16 (I think).

Oddly enough, I was an old Fitzroy fan/ When they got punted was right at the time I was getting serious about Rugby. Fair to say the loss of the Lions killed my interest in AFL.

If you go out to the Manningham Hotel (I think, the one near the Bulleen freeway exit) there is a whole bunch of Fitzroy memorbilia hung on the walls. Don't know exactly how it got there, probably something to do with Dyson Hore-Lacey IIRC.

Yes, correct. A frequent visitor to Sparks reserve when he's in town.

Paul Ioane was there last year, the dad I did my knee on the Hill. Think someone ask "why the fuck did you let your bro go to the 'saders"...
