Last year that would have been a yellow card at most. This year the rules are clear. Even in the 6N there have been some cards that looked marginal and would have been penalties last year at most.

All in all a good directive and the players will adjust. It is designed to protect players which is a good thing,

As for Cooper he had every opportunity to drop his shoulder and perform what is commonly known as a rugby tackle. No excuse. Lazy.

My problem isn't so much with the directive, it's how it's being applied.
The problem with 'cracking down' on an aspect of play is that invariably things will be missed and then the difference between something being picked up and not is massive. There were a handful of incidents in that match alone from both teams that involved contact with the head.
A better approach might be to leave that as a yellow and doing the 'cracking down' post match.

Agreed. It will never be perfect. Have to start somewhere though.

Things will be missed and sometimes players will get off but on the whole it will cause players to be mindful, coaches spending more time on technique to avoid the players getting carded and on balance it will be a positive outcome.

.........Whatever the impact of the new laws, Cooper needs to address his tackling technique. He must be right up there in terms of a player who is regularly carded for the same thing over and over. Even if the player was dropping it was careless..........

Ummmm, yes.

Let's call a spade a spade.

QC (Quade Cooper) knows the rules, he knows since January the rules have been tightened and the head-high tackle penalty-giving threshold has been significantly lessened in terms of assessed severity and type of resulting punishment.

He's had comparatively recent YCs before for this offence, some in Tests. It's getting close to a chronic, not incidental, failure in his capacity for self-discipline.

He plays in a mission-critical and pivotal Reds position and is meant to occupy a senior leadership role in the Reds and further to be a role model for fans and viewers.

He knows full well that for a 10 to be sent off will with certainty place the team in a, best case, far more vulnerable playing situation and, worse case, could actually and directly lose them the whole game. Further, an extended period of ban for the offence would likely do the team enduring, not once off, damage.

It is appalling and totally fucking idiotic in terms of his tackling attitude and playing concentration that, again, he's been given a YC or RC for this offence during a crucial period of the Lions' game.

This bloke is sadly a shadow of what he once was and one would have hoped he'd be super-sensitive to improving his technique and application in this crucial area of discipline. But, no, it was not be be. I would think Stiles would need peeling off the coaches' box ceiling after this latest transgression from QC (Quade Cooper) (let alone what Cheika must be thinking).

Those shoulder charges that the commentators carried on about in the first half were garbage, in both circumstances there were arms in the tackle
I will disprove you if I can get a copy of the game somewhere.

Umm how many years more do the reds need to learn..

They have a new coach, so they are starting from scratch. They have a bunch of youngsters there under new management. Let's see next year. They should be much better next year. If they are not, then I agree something is wrong.

As things stand the biggest contributing factor seems to be coaching for the Australian teams and also attitude. Look at the Rebels the first two weeks or so and then this week. The difference this week was attitude.

Ouch that looks bad, I not sure even the player is any lower than anyone normally is in tackle certainly hasn't ducked into it, and unfortunately looks like a swinging arm around head. This will not go well!!
It bounced up off the ball but that's not much of an excuse either

I hope not, give Paia'aua a shot, he is in the top 2 form players for the Reds this year and will prove his value.

Paia'aua has been good value at 12..... he isn't a 10, and you weaken two spots to strengthen one.. there is no immediate 12 substitute for Duncan either...

For what it's worth, the best the Reds backline looked in 2016 was with McIntyre at 10 and Paia'aua at 12, it was in the trial... incredibly RG never played that combo again in 2016

Fill your boots, but if they're talking about the Perese and Paia'aua tackles in the first 10min then there was certainly arms involved and the commentators were having a conniption over nothing

The Bulls player who got a red card for a very similar tackle for the one Cooper did just copped 4 weeks.

Quade's already on the plane home, obviously the Reds are expecting a ban

Perhaps Stiles is leading the charge through his own fury re QC (Quade Cooper)'s ill-disciplined recklessness before the SANZAAR judiciary opines.

BJ - did that Bulls player have priors?

QC (Quade Cooper)'s for high tackles go back to (at least) July 2012 (on B Barnes).

Nah, he got the special discount.

I'm not sure how far back they go for priors as in when they can refer to it as a 'clean record'.

As much as I like Quade his technique is simply poor (especially given his history), his going in consistently high is becoming a liability.

Maybe has fractured shoulder blade from 14 (or 15 I can't remember) is making him not want to commit to the hit but jeez he has to adjust fast or he'll be sitting more minutes out than he plays this year....
