id pick King every day. I don't think he's super rugby standard though - so that makes me question the process that see Mason come to the Tahs - as ILTW says its the emperor's new clothes.

I wonder how many players are playing off shore, or interstate becuase of selections like this?

Yep I first saw him a couple of years back when he was playing for Norths.
He stood out then - he looked dangerous.
Glad to see him back in Aus.

It seems to be a recent phenomenon that ex-schoolboy/U20s No 10s are simply not measuring up when brought in at higher levels.
Examples - McIntyre, Jooste, Mason, Deegan, even Horwitz in the No 10 spot. It's early days yet, but I can see Hamish Stewart also adding to this list based on his outings for the Reds.
Too many who do the pretty things at the lower levels but who perhaps haven't got the physicality to succeed at the higher levels?

All these fly halves (Mason, McIntyre, Deegan, Hegarty etc)are all of the same mould. They all play deep and lateral with minimal running threat and struggle with 'ad-lib' footy (they can quick though)
I think their success is due to their suitability in the overly structured football that is favoured in the Junior ranks.

In the system players that might be rockstars at school - struggle when playing with seasoned adults.
On Face book - I see Tah's and Camp Wallaby doing all this things at private schools???????
65% of kids don't go to private schools.
A very High % of NRL / Cricket / AFL stars did their schooling in the public system. Is there any reason why there couldn't be rugby stars in the public system????????

When NSW2s won the National Schools Championships last season, beating NSW1s in the Final, Hugh Jarse and Lee Grant reminded everyone that the same thing happened in 1977.
It was certainly a historic win and cause to hark back to the last time NSW2s had beaten the 1s in a Final.
1977 was the year the Ella brothers played school rugby for Matraville High. Mark and Glen played for NSW2s and Gary played for the 1s.
All 3 made the Aussie Schoolboys team, coached by Matraville High's Geoff Mould. That team toured Great Britain and received rave reviews. Its still referred to as being the greatest Schoolboy team ever.
At one game the entire Welsh rugby team stood and applauded the great display of running rugby by the Aussies. It was a star studded team. Wally Lewis couldnt crack it for a starting spot ahead of Mark Ella. Ricky Stewart played scrum half.
Im not sure how many of that team were from public schools but there used to be strong schoolboy competitions in Sydney played on a Wednesday. It would be interesting to know how many were from public schools.
The Waratah Shield was fiercely contested. Matraville High won it 5 times. That school produced Russel Fairfax as well as other Randwick greats and Internationals.
Now the Waratah Shield only limps along.

Yes great tour - i use to have some footage of it on youtube, went to click on it to share and it had been pulled because of "multiple complaints of copy write" fook me, it is sport and good viewing.
I was told on Saturday that the Peninsular Cup was building again (High school).
I also know of significant work being done with 4 local Public High Schools, but the work is being done by grass roots and not our governing bodies.

I think Dominic Vaughan (Newcastle) was the first string half on the tour with backup from Darrell Lester (Joeys) and Michael Egan (Matraville).
Ricky Stuart made the 1985 Aust Schoolboys team to the UK and went on the 1987 Wallaby tour to Argentina. He played in 3 games but no tests.

He means 10 years old, not played at 10.
Mark Ella and Tony Melrose were the 10's on the tour.
Wally Lewis was playing in the centres in those days.
