Yeah I’m not convinced it’s the right decision...

Firstly I liked Stiles, and for a few that had worked with him and played under him they spoke highly of him.

But, more importantly I don’t think changing the Head Coach to another rookie is going to bring the immediate results they desire. At the end of the day, Thorn is a rookie coach, and unless they bring in some highly qualified Assistant Coaches then I think similar results should be expected under Thorns coaching tenure as under Stiles.


I am grateful they they’ve out an end to the speculation though.. wonder why it took so long, were they waiting to see how the pieces fell into place with Wessels and his assistant coaches?

I am really hoping that the change to Thorne will get the desired results. Going to put a lot of pressure on him. I hope the players actually take to heart the change in coaching staff and have a good hard look at themselves and decide to have a crack next year.

Cant help but feel Stiles would have been worth another 12 months. But the decision has been made and will support the team as usual.

Whilst I think Thorn will make a great coach one day, I still believe it's too early and that Stiles should have been given one more shot at it. Call me a pessimist but my fear is this will end up poorly, especially given the track record the QRU has racked up since Link left.

I hope Brad proves me wrong

I wonder if they'll apply the same expectations/standards to the back of the house. If Thorn doesn't work out, what respectable coach would want to touch the QRU with a 50 foot pole as they're an absolute mess.

TOCC What do you mean by changing to ANOTHER rookie head coach? I hope your not implying that Stiles was a rookie head coach because this is officially the first full season he has had as HC Stiles had plenty of experience in the top job (albeit only at the interim HC) both with the Force & Reds. Think he had plenty of time to audition in Interim and when it came to the Reds he was picked over O'Connor. Personally I don't like the term "Rookie Head Coach" I understand they are rookies at the Super rugby level but a lot of the reds have selected over the years have cut their teeth as head coaches in other competitions.

What much of this debate re replacing Stiles neglects is the increasingly perilous financial and cash flow situation of the QRU in late 2017.

Income and crowd levels have been seriously declining for two years now and one more appallingly bad season like 2017's - after all the hype and promise, yet again since 2013 all unfulfilled - could well have the QRU right back to where they were in late 2009, namely: on the edge of bankruptcy.

Paying out Stiles' 2018 $ entitlements pales into insignificance against a backdrop of crowds consistently under 12,000, sponsors deserting or paying way less, and insolvency thus looming with no credible solution or upward trend in sight.

The QRU had to take the risk to make a change - Stiles' coaching record is unambiguously disastrous by any standard. Whether the change is the right one, time will tell.

I was always amused how even well into this season there were seasoned posters here who for some inexplicable reasons (to me at least) continued to rate Stiles as 'a good HC worth persisting with' even though there was zero hard evidence to back this warm embrace up, zero. I can honestly attest, like some others here I was highly sceptical as to his value as HC or AC from the word go.

Even as a Reds Forwards AC, his sole achievement at the Reds was a temporarily enhanced scrum performance. There was nothing else. He achieved little at the Force and even today many UQ insiders say his time there was 'average at best'.

But after that infamous 'rigorous world-wide search', Stiles was the 'good QLD rugby man' deigned wise to follow in the footsteps of the preceding 'good QLD rugby man', R Graham. Keep the pattern rolling. Keep the disastrous misjudgements of the QRU at least on a consistent path.

** It is well worth remembering as a coda to all this that the QRU was positively beaming with delight in 2016 that they had involved 'extensively' the ARU and its HPU in assisting with the final selection of Stiles as HC and too the choices of his ACs. Enough said.

Anyone who considers that culling the Force and the related issues therein was Australian rugby's biggest problem zone in a nutshell is utterly deluded. These dramas were but a smokescreen for much larger dangers. Our biggest problems by far lie within the chronically incompetent and inadequate state of leadership within the ARU itself, closely followed by that within the NSWRU and the QRU, all as demonstrated not by my opinion, but by the facts of the tangible results of their policies and management.

So the Stiles (last) appointment was via committee including ARU. How was it handled this time?

Doesn’t look like the ARU input was worth anything.

Personally I’m not convinced that Stiles was looking good for a turn around, can’t fault considering alternatives. Unfortunately I’m not at all convinced that the right alternative has resulted. Stiles may well have been better than Thorn for 2018, not a lot there to suggest otherwise.

Hope I’m wrong.

I am going to go out on a limb here guys and say the REDS will win their conference.

You can all ridicule me next July... But I believe in this move. Like I said i am going to purchase season tickets after a 6 year hiatus. #WeAreRED

Well the Reds certainly achieved something no other franchise has. They've had a coach who moved backwards in time - MOÇ Sept 15 - July 15.

Start of the year I had our old boys rugby lunch and we got a couple of old Brissy based wallabies and Reds to be guest speakers.. They know and have played with Stile's over the years..... After the formal Q&A and beer were flowing,I asked how do think they will go under stiles this year. I got this dull look from a couple. Didn't get into , but I didn't take in a good way. turns out they were onto somethings.

Be another tough season ahead and will not be getting carried away like I did this year.
If the rumour was true i to are disappointed that Phil Mooney wont be coming back to the Reds.
