Where will CAS Rugby be in 5 years time I ask myself.

I caught the train yesterday afternoon, and there was a Knox lad in full rugby kit fresh from training on Gillespie field. I asked him what team he was in and he replied the 13D's. I asked how many teams does Knox have in the U13s (year 7) age group this year. He replied only 4 rugby teams but we have 18 soccer teams.

18 soccer teams!!!

I was gobsmacked. Knox has had a very large influx of kids in the lower age groups in recent times and the year 7 class numbers is now significantly larger than their arch rival Barker.

I did some checking on the status of the number of Barker U13 rugby teams and I was dismayed to discover they have only 3 teams. (according to my source)

So my original question stands. Where will CAS rugby be in 5 years time??

Hard to believe.

Even Cranbrook has 4 teams in the U13.

So, by my maths that is somewhere over 200 boys playing soccer (I have no idea how many reserves they would allocate to a team, but I am guessing each team is at least 1 more than 11)

And only 60 odd playing Rugby.

Knox is no longer a traditional Rugby School.

It is a Soccer school that offers Rugby for the few weird kids that don't fit in.

Whilst the trend seems clear, it’s not always one way traffic. Sometimes boys start high school playing soccer, see how much the rugby boys enjoy Heaven’s Game and then make the switch in the u14s (if Mum doesn’t veto).

I am afraid the round ball game,and AFL, are taking over all/most schools.

Waverley has 23 rugby teams and 31 soccer teams.

The 13s have 5 rugby teams.

However given the number of boys now in a typical Knox year 7, I believe 300+, having 18 soccer teams to 4 rugby teams in the 13s is horrendous.

Not quite as bad in the more senior years but still not good.

Edit - there are about 15 sports offered in winter though, these are just the main ones.

Not such a bad ratio considering.
No idea how many AFL teams.

Soccer and AFL are good at signing the young kids up and rugby needs to get better at it.
Easier said than done.

The Wav 15A's should have an interesting game with Shore this w/e. Shore were sneaky strong and pretty organised last year in the 14's. They caused a few upsets in the GPS comp.

Will probably get along to watch your boys in the 15's and 1sts. My boy is on camp, so in need of a rugby fix!

I think its an incredible shame that at a school like Knox with those amazing facilities that they don't make watching a home Rugby game compulsory for year 7 (at least) then they would get an understanding of school spirit and the culture and values of the school. Put some "fire in the belly" to be part of the experience in years ahead as a participant.

AS, Couldn't agree more, those that never see a 1sts XV game, tunnel etc, have no idea what they have missed out on and never really get the culture of a school.

I love cricket etc BUT the rugby atmosphere is second to none, and yes attendance should be compulsory by certain year groups.Age groups are rotated at Waverley home games to support the 1s.

You are spot on.

Shore 14as last year were very strong, I believe 1 of their shining age groups.

We have 2 forwards out for Sat, you know them both,other than that we are at full tote.
I will be at Shore with my younger bloke for the 13s,so won't be at QP, they are playing at exactly the same time.
We will stay at Shore for the 1s, grab me if you do come to Shore for the 1s.

Our 15as are playing at 12 at QP no.1, will be a solid game.

Shore 14a’s (last year’s 13s) are also a strong side and had a very close call with Joeys last year (leading 31-7 at half time and going on to lose 35-31) and won a number of their other games. Should be a good clash between Waverley and Shore 14s and 15s this Saturday.

I think both games will be crackers and what is really good is that both games are played on our QP no.1 ground, the 15as at 12 and the 14as at 1pm, straight after.

Whilst I am alarmed at the rise of soccer and the decline of rugby numbers at Knox, I think the year 7 boy you chatted to needs to spend a bit more time on maths revision.

The Rugby and soccer numbers this year are:

Rugby.............................. Soccer
Opens 8 teams.............. 8 teams
16's 5 teams................. 8 teams
15's 5 teams................. 6 teams
14's 4 teams................. 8 teams
13's 4 maybe 5 teams..... 8 teams

Not great reading but slightly less alarming. Also, there are about 10 other winter sports to choose from, which is waaay too many IMO.

Gents a country perspective from over the mountains up on the hill at Stannies. On average we would have between 80 to 100 boys per year group and the winter sports selection is rugby, rugby and more rugby. If the boys want to play soccer or hockey or afl or rugby league there are town teams to play with. Half of every year group would play rugby, the interest in it increases as the boys progress through the years singing the Ric after a win is something all the boys look forward to.
On a town perspective soccer or football have extremely good numbers in the lower age groups but numbers drop off dramatically around the 12 year age group. Afl has 2 junior clubs in Bathurst with teams in most age groups and now women's and men's teams,very well structured and the development and support into the primary schools is with out peer and is worrying for any sport that does not continually promote itself.
