Brian Westlake

Well said Brian - there was one huge elephant in the room (nation)!
Time to step up and use the resources we have at hand.
The worst, I am afraid, is still to come.
If you asked the Captain and 3 certainties to select their best, I am sure it would be vastly different from what the selectors and Mssrs Thompson etal would pick.
Yes, the coaches and selectors have seen them all their school and colts career, but....As a player, you KNOW who was or is soft. The player that goes missing. Just once. Thats all it takes.
I raise memory of an injured No.8 by the name of Tim Gavin. Every player selected wanted Tim there. They knew he had " No shit in him". They knew that an injured Timmy was better than no Timmy.
The young Rugby community needs to develop this attitude. So that they can be selected without fear NOR favour.
I watched a game last night and then another today, that quite frankly, highlighted the haves.... and the have nots

Interesting that Brian Westlake attacks all non-NSW players for that performance. For starters, he attacked the halves, yet conveniently ignored the NSW centres who weren't any better by any stretch.

Arguably, the best player for Aus was from Victoria, who outshone his, shock horror, NSW locking partner.

The wingers aren't even in the squad, neither is the 12, neither is the 15, and they don't deserve to be there on that performance, and fair enough if you say perhaps Nucifora and Pleash and Saaga and Williams a few others maybe too don't deserve to be there on their performance.

From where I sat, that average performance didn't bias by state. What it highlighted is that our depth is not great this year in a few positions.

Well done to Deegan and Kellaway for coming on and making a difference, but they are good players coming on against a tiring side who perhaps caught Aus unawares and should make difference.

Leave your rubbish state bias at the door, the U20s don't need more of that rubbish.

There is no need for such mindless attack on the coaching and non-NSW players on this forum. I know some people are still upset that their sons were not selected but this by no means should sway the constructive discussion on this forum to such rants and baseless accusations. Grow up. Talk some sense here. Let's think who should be in line up for small AB on Saturday.
Sandell, Fainga'a, Orr, Hanigan, Tui, Kamp, Gunn, Korczyk, Tuttle, Deegan, Yasmin, Pauia (Tuipolutu), Redden, Keleway, Newsome is my pick.

Who exactly hasn't been picked in this current squad that really should be there?

Mitchell Short seems about the only one who was very impressive at the national champs but hasn't been picked.

I don't think it's particularly helpful having a crack at the team that played Japan. It's well accepted that this wasn't our best XV and that was by design. It probably highlights the fact that our best players are dramatically better than the players at the bottom end of the squad at this age which is exactly what should be expected. Of any under 20 team, only a percentage will go on to have strong professional rugby careers.

Is this the situation also with other teams involved or who will be at the JRWC? If so, then Aus U20s would be in the same boat, but if not then it is really a matter of concern.

Does the result of the NZ v Samoa game support one contention over the other?

I don't really know. I think NZ is likely to have greater depth than we do because that is the reality in the professional game. South Africa and England have been incredibly good in the last few years but I'm not sure whether their depth is much better.

NZ beat Samoa 36-14 which is very similar to our win against Samoa of 33-10.

It definitely sounds like we had an off day against Japan and they played very well.

Young Australians ready for New Zealand challenge

The Australian U20’s side has been named for Saturday’s Oceania Rugby Junior Championship final against New Zealand at Bond University, where rising Queensland Reds number 8 Adam Korcyzk will make his first appearance for Australia in the tournament.

Returning from a successful tour of South Africa with the Reds, Korcyzk will add more Asteron Life Super Rugby experience to the Australian side as they look to overcome New Zealand for the first time at U20’s level.

Captain Andrew Kellaway from the NSW Waratahs returns to the starting 15 having played off the bench in Australia’s victory against Japan.

Australian U20’s Head Coach Adrian Thompson has backed his side to perform:

“The side we have picked to play New Zealand is a very strong group of 23 players.

“We had the opportunity to trial and test players in positions in our match against Japan and the team we have settled on for this match has the capability to win the Oceania Rugby Junior Championship.

"We are aware of the challenge of beating New Zealand, but it’s a challenge the team is really looking forward to,” said Thompson.

With Qantas Australian Sevens squad member Brad Wilkin ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury, Thompson was happy to see Adam Korczyk return from duties with the Queensland Reds.

“Adam has already proven he is a rising talent in our pathways system having come through Australian Schoolboys, Queensland U20’s and through the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship with Brisbane City.

“He has played well when given his opportunity for the Queensland Reds and he will add much to our game on Saturday.”

The match kicks off at 3pm EST on Saturday (9 May) and will be streamed live through www.rugby.com.au.

Why haven't we hosted this, we surely should get it next year. Italy hosted it in 2011 ffs

Until last year, Australian didn't really take this tournament seriously. I would suspect there will be an application to host it soon enough.

Interesting that the 2 wingers were not initially selected int he Asutralian side, yet Tuipolotu was, and hasn't played any minutes yet? Wondering if he is a specialist centre or if there is some other reason why he isn't getting a run? Much better looking pack for this one, lets hope they step it up!

Good to see Ned Hanigan getting a run on the side of the scrum.

There are some who believe his future is as a loose forward (#6 or #8) rather than a lock.

@Hans, As good a players that the replacement wingers (Joey the Whippet Fittock and Flash Tyson Davis) are, there are 5 players in Team Rehab who are back 3 players: Quick, Placid, Magnay, Jones and Hutchison. The U20 Selectors have had little choice but to name the paratroopers.

The Selectors have gone for size up front and while some of the run on backs are smallish in stature they generally play "big".

I worry that Tuttle may not be able to unleash the full potential of the Princess Division, and he needs to have a good game, because he will have the NZL #9 all over him like a rash.

Interesting to see that original selection Olly Kamp doesn't make the 23 for the "big game" but two of the injury paratroopers (Croke and McCalman) get a gig in the Game Day 23.

Go You Good Things.

I am expecting this squad to perform well if they respect the core elements of the game.
They also need to "play" for 80 plus minutes.
That is a very good squad from what I have seen plus a few others to come back possibly from medicos tent. They will need them all in a world cup campaign because it is war and the two things you dont want to be short of is fitness and troops.
Now is the time where a bunch of talented eager lads MUST gel and work as a team, thats their biggest challenge.
Its Wallabies v All Blacks get behind the boys.

Good to see Sandell back. I found out recently that he had a groin niggle but was asked not to disclose it.

McInerney didn't blow my socks off in the first game but neither did FF (Folau Fainga'a) in the second.

The future career of Hanigan (correct spelling ARU) will be on the blindside flank, or occasionally at no.8; so it is good to see him there. The Aussies will be after as much bulk as is possible for the SAffer pool game, and this is one variation for the big games they will be looking at, though it may depend somewhat on whether or not LLT can play lock against an elite opponent as well as he did against Japan.

I was not all that convinced by Winter at lock but I will have another look at him.

Korczyk will be a welcome addition. Hanigan and he are elite lineout guys in this age group. Provided the ball is thrown well and the moves and the lifting are spot on, the lineouts should be good.

Tuttle was poor in the first game except on the run but we've all had a go at him; so let's leave him alone for 24 hours.

Paia'aua was good in the first game at 12 but let's see how he stops peak-hour traffic. I was surprised that Yassmin didn't get another gig on the wing; Newsome is lucky to get another chance, but the kid is in the 'good footie' player category and I'm sure he will bounce back - and he is probably the reserve goal-kicker.

The main thing I am hoping for is that the forwards are switched on and not just reactive. And that goes for the whole team on taps-and-go and in realigning smartly on turnover plays and other breakouts.

Head Coach Scott Robertson and his assistants Leon MacDonald and Tana Umaga have selected a strong squad, while still looking to test combinations. Just seven of the players selected were in the team that beat Samoa 36-14 on Tuesday. Prop Ricky Riccitelli, hooker Steven Misa, winger Nathanial Apa and midfielder Anton Lienert-Brown, are the only players who retain their starting positions.

“We are pretty pleased with how the boys have performed over the past week. It’s great to be able to really see the combinations come together, to put the boys under a bit of pressure in a tournament environment, and we’ve been pleased with how they’ve responded.

“We’re still looking at this as the ideal way to prepare for a World Under 20 Championship in Italy and the competition for places is intense – it’s exactly the preparation we need,” Robertson said.

Lienert-Brown will captain the side tomorrow after Atunaisa Moli was rested with a shoulder injury. Otere Black returned to New Zealand earlier this week after he was recalled by the Hurricanes following an injury to first five-eighth Beauden Barrett.

The match, being played at Bond University on the Gold Coast, kicks off at 5:00pm NZT. The New Zealand squad to compete in the World Rugby Under 20 Championship (formerly known as Junior World Championship) in Italy in June, will be named early next week.
