2nd yellow to Magnay for neck roll resulted in red card. Down to 14 players for last 35 minutes

Disappointing game with no attacking options without Magnay and Jooste not being a specialist centre player. Tuipulotu would have been the better option (not sure why he is not playing being the first game) with Jooste at fullback. Too many basic errors and knock on's. Hope we can make a come back from that loss.

Australia very good at set piece....
This March report doesn't agree (http://www.rugbynews.net.au/australian-u20s-lose-world-championship-opener-to-scotland/):
"Australia was unable to capitalise on two line-outs inside Scotland’s attacking quarter, as the Scots turned the tables at scrum time, earning two penalties before kicking a penalty goal to take a 3-0 lead."

".... a sloppy Australian line out plagued the remainder of the first half as Australia went to the break ahead by just four points."

Sadly, also, two promising attaching surges in the last 10 minutes, were cut short by different front rowers dropping the ball cold in attack.

Disappointing from Australia. Far too much dropped ball and the red card to Magnay made it difficult to stay in the game.

They tried pushing the passes far too much particularly in the first half. The best passages of play were when they kept it simple and just tried to make the advantage line.

Well, there goes another under 20 World Cup attempt.

Day One wrap:

No real surprises, Australia v Scotland was always gonna be close IMO, ditto Wales & Ireland.

I know it's a money thing but, shit, I'd love to see a proper 16-team comp with QF's or failing that two Pools of six & top two go through, this three X four & best runner-up format just doesn't work IMO, too many teams get put out of contention too early in the piece.

Beggar, Fork, Shoot and Pass.

Well done to the young Single Malts who are carrying on the grand tradition that the mature Single Malts have established of beating the Men in Gold.

Sounds like game 1 of the FORU Tournament at Bond Uni this year against NZL.

It is deja vu all over again once more as history repeats with the Jnr Wobs being beaten in a pool game. This will make it almost impossible to get a favourable semi-final spot if we even make it that far. At least we scored a losing BP, which may be vital in determining the best loser SF position.

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda. We have a lot of first choice players at home in Team Rehab but it is a moot point that they would have made a difference. We are not Robinson Crusoe there and all teams will have some or many first choice players in Team Rehab.

Tournament play is all about player depth and selections.

Hard to think that the entire 6N was an exercise in deception, but our easy pool is suddenly looking not so easy. AUS can't even beat the 3rd last team in the 6N. What hope have we got? The tournament arrangements mean that there are no second chances, and we have probably blown this years tilt for glory already.

Overnight results with the Puma Cubs beating France, 6N heavyweights WAL&IRE having a very close match & the Soap Dodgers thrashing the Azzuri along with the expected minnow thrashings from NZL & SAF show that there will be no easy games where we can relax, especially if we are aiming to get to the Semis or shock horror the GF.

Just got back from the game. We were clearly dominant at scrum time, competitive in the line out and generally bashed the Scots but they tackled like demons and refused to yield. The Magnay neck roll was very harsh, from where I saw it 50 feet away he mostly had him under the arm pits. More to do with a lightweight Scot and Magnay's strength. The referee was coping heaps from both camps. I was seated roughly in between Gavin Hastings and Sam Scott Young and neither of their parties were happy with the indecisiveness of the ref and the interminable delays in making TMO decisions. Australia probably didn't get the rub of the green - Kennewell ankle tapped in the 1st half as he gassed his opposite and the line beckoning and I think it was Kennewell again in the 2nd half when he was millimetres over the sideline when over the score in the corner. I must look up the stats because from the sideline it looked like Australia won all the key areas except the scoreboard.

Hard to win a match with one yellow card time out for 10 minutes and then a red for what another 35 minutes in a tight contest.

It's only the ABs that get better playing 14s.

Could Magnay's Super status have promoted a confidence that was over-confidence and hence reckless? Ego factors can play a big part in that age group.

Brilliant contest overall. Ref was a bit shite, but both yellows were quite clear. Magnay is quite clearly a very good player, he had a magnificent break, whixh is definitely not a one off, he's a glorious size and has very nice hands, but there must be something wrong up top, while they were arguably caused by his superior strength, they were still penalty worthy offences regardless of the final outcome.

Think about starting some more Victorians next time eh? ;) Both sets of boys were extremely brave, us through injuries and size difference, yours through that unfortunate Red card (in that it was 2 yellows to the same player rather than being wrong).

Nice surprise to wake up to, was hoping for anything within 15 points. Hopefully we meet again in the final!

I thought the yellow was fine watching it on TV. With the crack down on anything around the neck and referees generally being harsher on dangerous play in the under 20s he was always going to go for it.

It seemed like a case of Magnay wanting to exert his physicality a couple of times and going a bit overboard.

At the end of the day it was probably the difference between winning and losing.

Credit to Scotland. They defended brilliantly and took their chances.

I've just seen the "highlights".

Some fucking stupidity from Magnay, though I thought the first card was only just yellow, the second one was fully deserved and probably could have been red, given the duty of care rules at U20 levels.

Terrible, lazy line defence from the Australian forwards in the clip on twitter, and deserved to lose based on that.

Mentally not up to it.

So now we've got to beat Italy and England and hope England beats Scotland and then we can sneak through on bonus points and for and against.

Didn't Magnay get a Red card in the opening game last year ?

No but he got two yellow cards in the 5th place playoff where we beat Wales. Fortunately for us, the second yellow was in the last few minutes.

I thought both cards were soft (especially the first one) but just on the side of correct sanction. Very unfortunate. Our chances of a victory are cooked but I hope Magnay doesn't get too down or retreat into his shell. We need him angry and running hard to progress further in the tournament. Tuipolotu should be playing 12.
