Frank Row (1)
Three of the top schoolboy rowing programs from the 2024 season. That 8 must be flying. Does anyone know what is involved in the junior trials process? Do they have to qualify the boat somehow? And when it is?

Rowing the Kings Filippi for now. No involvement from NTC, etc. What boat would these boys be using? One from one of the schools? Or from the mens national training centre? Fillipi, empacher?
The Filippi King's' rowed in at the HotR and the nationals isn't their boat. Apparently King's damaged their Filippi a few/some weeks ago which led to them borrowing an exact same boat from Melbourne University Boat Club up until the nationals. The MUBC boat was lent on the basis it was returned immediately after the nationals in the same condition it left the MUBC boatshed. Any subsequent arrangements, I'm not aware of.Rowing the Kings Filippi for now. No involvement from NTC, etc.
Yes, Kings do have a nasty habit of destroying their boats. But perhaps they might be rowing the 2nd VIII boat? The Filippi isn't King's' boat. Apparently, I heard that Charlie Galligan, the 4 seat of the infamous Shore 1st 8, pulled a staggering 6:08 2k Erg score. Quite an impressive feat of endurance and strength. Is anyone able to concrete this, or is it just more silly Shore boy banter. Cheers.

The first 8 rowed the MUBC 8 they borrowed at head of the river. And then hopped in the second 8 boat and raced in that boat for Nationals. That second 8 boat is now being used by the Jnr crew that’s trialling. The Filippi King's' rowed in at the HotR and the nationals isn't their boat. Has the King's' Filippi been repaired?
It wasn’t the exact same mould, etc. MUBC boat was reverse wing rigger. TKS boats are standard wing rigger. The Filippi King's' rowed in at the HotR and the nationals isn't their boat. Does anyone know why Kings decided to swap from the MUBC reverse wing rigger boat to their 2nd VIII standard rigged boat after HOTR?It wasn’t the exact same mould, etc. MUBC boat was reverse wing rigger. TKS boats are standard wing rigger.
probably due to a deadline of return.Does anyone know why Kings decided to swap from the MUBC reverse wing rigger boat to their 2nd VIII standard rigged boat after HOTR?

If this were to be true it would show some great promise as i believe he is only in yr 11. An incredible feat of strength and power both physically and mentally.Apparently, I heard that Charlie Galligan, the 4 seat of the infamous Shore 1st 8, pulled a staggering 6:08 2k Erg score. SJC do have a cerise Empacher...but at the end of the day, it's not about the boat, its colour, or the amount it cost.Rumours are rumours so we will see in November I assume. I don’t think they will be quick to throw out the SL boat that got them the win though
Of course this is true, its not about the cost or colour of the boat. It's about how big the boys engines are and we even saw it this year with the Joeys 8 using a borrowed empacher from someone but after a few weeks decided to go back to their SL Racing (NZ) shell and that proved to be an obvious difference as they caught a 4 second gap to Kings and put on a further 2.4 to win the Major Rennie Trophy.SJC do have a cerise Empacher...but at the end of the day, it's not about the boat, its colour, or the amount it cost.
1996 Shore VIII - set the record 5.42 in a KIRS (NZ) East German shape
2015 SJC VIII - broke the drought in a KIRS/LASZLO (NZ)
2018 SIC VIII - broke the drought in a LASZLO (NZ)
2024 SJC VIII - SL (NZ)
Shore 2008 Grand Slam - all boats KIRS (NZ)
Riverview 2023 Almost Grand Slam - 5 of 6 boats LASZLO (NZ)
With the right exchange rate the NZ boats can come in at close to half the price of a top of the line Empacher / Hudson / Filippi.
Tom O Hara, 2025 (First four this year) played in the Firsts on the weekend on the wing, talented rower who didn't row in year 10 but came back this year and worked up to the first four. Made GPS 16's in 2023.Given that this is a 'rugby' website who of this years rowing fraternity look like lining up for their respective school 1stXV?
Looks like UTS and SRC are the favourites for 2024 1st VIII and 2nd VIII returning rowers. SRC is renowned to have one of the best winter programs which is interesting that UTS seems to be one of the favourites for returning rowersTom O Hara, 2025 (First four this year) played in the Firsts on the weekend on the wing, talented rower who didn't row in year 10 but came back this year and worked up to the first four. Jack Pinn, TSC 1st VIII stroke is training with the 1's and 2's and will probably float around their for the season, talented flanker with great mungrel.
Sam Stewart 1st VIII powerhouse year 11 was a 16a's player last year so might play in a high team but also could be more focused upon the 8 man sport.
Many first junior boys are currently in the 16a's for footy, Hugh Merriman loose forward, Charlie White winger and stroke Max Crawford at halfback. Halfback not the usual position for a rower but Crawford makes it work despite his height at about 6'0 and a half. Has also played flanker in the past. Many other A's players around the 2nd and 3rd junior as well.
Conrad Low, (1st VII Cox) is looking to lead the mighty 16e's to a premiership, notably in year 8 he scored 5 tries in one game against SJC (true story) in the scots 14e's who were undefeated that season. Conrad is known for his left foot step and fend, which rival cox Johnny Yates, will be looking to shut down this year. Will most returning rowers be training in winter rowing in some form? Lot of the Scots boys are, UTS seems to be the favourite.
