What happened to Grammar in the 1st VIII and anyone know why Iggies baled after the Schoolboy heat? Any foxing going on???

is that foxing you say?
I'll take that as no one has any insights. Guess we'll see what happens at the SRC regatta. Be all over by 9-ish and then we enter rowing radio silence as the crews go into lockdown. Last chance for a crew to stake a claim and send the bookmakers running.

I have an insight. The riverview crew tried out a new race plan on saturday, and when it didnt work (beaten by kings and joeys) they chucked the boat on the trailer and hopped over to the nepean to do some training/refinement of their race plan.

no idea about grammar though....

Well it pains me to say it but the boys in black know they're not the favourites so why bother competing for the state championship with the likes of Scotch, Geelong etc. and waste all that precious paddling time, it takes time to get used to the beautiful yellow boat so that comes into play too. Don't stress though they'll take their time and the Master Michael Smith will be keen to see them on top of the podium on March 9th. Doesn't matter what your raceplan is, Riverview struggled early on, went to all that effort to get their bow ball infront of Joeys and Kings with 250m to go and then the Kings and the Joeys decided that it was not on so they dug in. The last 250m is hardly a question of raceplan, thats a question of boat speed. Plus if you look at the splits compared to last week Kings must have been a little fresher because their last 500m was nearly identical to the Joeys who have been fairly consistent in the last few weeks. The Joeys time in he heat was nearly a second faster than Shore and Kings less than a second behind Shore, everyone knows the HOTR is all about the first race. Other Schools Riverview, Scots only a few seconds in it, Newington a little further back but not far off either. Its close. You know it, I know it and you can bet your ass that the boys on the North Shore do as well. Speaking of which how much did Scotch College spank everyone?! I knew that our crews were not all that amazing in the scheme of things, they did get up on Sydney Uni and Melbourne Uni but they mmust not be going that fast either when you look at the times, nonetheless it was a good day for 17/18 year old Scotch & some Sydney Schools on the rocks.

Grammar boys did well in the double on Sunday (might have something to do with them having no races on Saturday yes I concede), but solid nonetheless. Kings boys were close to podium in that race but no cigar. Kings did however manage to give Sydney Uni (including Shore old boy Alex Purnell, brother of Nick Olympic Stroke) a 6 second touch up in the U/19 4x which was noteworthy.

I don't think the Sydney Uni crews have been at it as a combination as long as the schoolboy crews. I suspect with hard nights on the turps, demanding girlfriends, work commitments, sometimes they chisel together a crew a few weeks out and try and just go for it. Word I heard was Scotch have a programme that involves training all year round - making their rowers pretty much specialists unlike the all round athletes of the GPS!

Unfortunately I have not been able to keep an eye on Joeys rowing this year, having left last year. Can anyone give me an insight into how they are performing in the lead up to HOTR? I understand that Shore remain favourites but Joeys have made improvements under Doyle.

At both regattas at SIRC this year Shore have been the best GPS school, with Joeys the second best. Margins:
Kings/PLC/NSW Rowing - 3.56
State Champs - 0.99
The dark horse is Riverview but it is really between these crews. This is Joey's best chance in a while and although Shore are highly fancied I wouldn't be surprised if Joeys won.

I would be. That's a whole lot of pressure. There is a long history of falling short when it counts for the boys in pink. Michael Morgan had Joeys crews winning throughout and still no HOTR.

any bets on new for the podium for hotr?

easily shore, newington have poor management and no guts, joeys have a good shot, but remember their still just rugby players in a boat, riverview are all over the place, kings with start their musical chairs again soon, high no chance as always, grammer, not the 2011 crew, scots are too small, quite a way off the pass.

Newington after beating Scotch in the heat of the U21 Mens 8+ on the weekend has left spirits high, even though it was blatant that Scotch rated 24 for the last 300m. Ignorance is bliss. Culture will have to change for New to have a chance with keeping up with the big boys with their short finishes and v-splash catches leading to no loss of momentum at the catch and increased acceleration and propulsion.

Thankyou. Now that you've told me we're in with a chance my heart is racing. Whilst obviously Shore are still favourites, and they've got a lot of history behind them, while we've got a lot against us, I'm a hopeless optimist. The celebrations that Joeys old boys would have after a win would be unlike anything seen before on this earth.

2013 Shore for the trophy with Joeys and Grammar minor placings.

2014/2015 Shore, Joeys, Grammer sheds to shine
2016/2017 Shore Newington Riverview sheds to shine
