Well it pains me to say it but the boys in black know they're not the favourites so why bother competing for the state championship with the likes of Scotch, Geelong etc. and waste all that precious paddling time, it takes time to get used to the beautiful yellow boat so that comes into play too. Don't stress though they'll take their time and the Master Michael Smith will be keen to see them on top of the podium on March 9th. Doesn't matter what your raceplan is, Riverview struggled early on, went to all that effort to get their bow ball infront of Joeys and Kings with 250m to go and then the Kings and the Joeys decided that it was not on so they dug in. The last 250m is hardly a question of raceplan, thats a question of boat speed. Plus if you look at the splits compared to last week Kings must have been a little fresher because their last 500m was nearly identical to the Joeys who have been fairly consistent in the last few weeks. The Joeys time in he heat was nearly a second faster than Shore and Kings less than a second behind Shore, everyone knows the HOTR is all about the first race. Other Schools Riverview, Scots only a few seconds in it, Newington a little further back but not far off either. Its close. You know it, I know it and you can bet your ass that the boys on the North Shore do as well. Speaking of which how much did Scotch College spank everyone?! I knew that our crews were not all that amazing in the scheme of things, they did get up on Sydney Uni and Melbourne Uni but they mmust not be going that fast either when you look at the times, nonetheless it was a good day for 17/18 year old Scotch & some Sydney Schools on the rocks.
Grammar boys did well in the double on Sunday (might have something to do with them having no races on Saturday yes I concede), but solid nonetheless. Kings boys were close to podium in that race but no cigar. Kings did however manage to give Sydney Uni (including Shore old boy Alex Purnell, brother of Nick Olympic Stroke) a 6 second touch up in the U/19 4x which was noteworthy.
