I like wikileaks. They revealed the governments censorship 'blacklist' not too long ago, which was very useful. Also, their US army corruption/war crimes leaks seem to be in the right spirit.

I haven't made my mind up about the most recent leaks (all the government cables). Whether they are good or not, they are an organisation against government secrets who don't seem to be breaking any laws. So hopefully this phase passes without too much trouble and wikileaks move onto exposing bank corruption early next year!

Also, the rape case is a complete joke. I can't believe the media wont put that to rest.

Why did the women go the police if they thought they were at risk of HIV/AIDS or any other STI? Surely they should have gotten medical advice: had blood tests and been put on an immediate course of medication to cut the chances of them getting HIV/AIDS? In those circumstances you don't wait around for someone else to get blood tests, you get them yourself.

This morning's leaks are very interesting: Rudd saying that Afghanistan is hopeless. You could take 2 approaches:

1. No big deal, showing a bit of bravado in public but being privately worried.

OR

2. Our Prime Minister lying to the public about the progress in the war.

I go with point 2, because in a democracy, we're supposed to know this kind of thing. I don't think the blanket alibi "diplomacy" gives your government carte blanche to consistently lie to their public, which is emerging as the standard operating procedure of western democracies.

But surely it's kind of obvious that A-stan is actually pretty hopeless and without any overall strategy for withdrawal and some sort of definite 'victory'?

Makes me more inclined to go with 1). Sure, they should be being honest and open about what the story is, but since when has that been the case?

3. We are required to be there in accordance with our reliance on the USA, we will support the US despite our belief it is a lost cause.
If we do not support them in this regard, our whole defence strategy is out the window.
They could not state this publicly, cos the pressure to withdraw would be huge.
damned if they do, damned if they don't

I'm voting mostly for 3, though there are certainly elements of 1 or 2. I have to say that it's been fascinating to observe these behind the scenes shenanigans and hear what senior pollies really think underneath all the sanitised public offerings.

Yeah, someone needs to expose our current set of politicians. What's more, the Oppositions' silence (apart from Malcom Turnball, who wrote a good op-ed for the SMH) is deafening.

Meanwhile, our lovely government keeps on claiming WikiLeaks is "illegal", and somehow claims it is different from other publishers. I feel for Assange, his own government is betraying him, yet he still has popular support within his own country. Democracy?

Our goverment is gutless and turning more and more into America's drooling little lapdog.

This is a real test for Joolia and as with most things she is failing miserably.

The government are treating this disgustingly.

"THE Gillard government has hardened its position on the WikiLeaks expose, saying it is illegal in Australia to obtain - or distribute - classified documents."

Under what law? They can't just make up laws, but i'm guessing they have found an anti-freedom law to use in their favor. In which case the law is probably pathetic.

Also, why do they keep saying they are illegal when they are reading every single one? If they are going to charge people obtaining the documents then they should lead by example.

Lastly, if they mention censoring wikileaks in Australia one more time my head will explode. Who are they to tell us what TRUE data is appropriate for our eyes? I understand wanting to censor child porn, but not any document bearing basic data, that is pathetic. I'd like to show Joolia this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq1e4cfvUKE#t=130s
