Aussie Player Exodus

Agree with this bolded bit - the rest assumes that some players will never learn, which contributes to our drop in numbers I am betting the Brumby Darcy Swain will be the next to go and you and your mates can applaud that one too. Then if they make it you can say 'Well we can just buy them back'....

Swinton is a good example of the contracting situation. He's the level of player that is hardest to keep here because he's not a consistent Wallaby that we can pay a good salary to but he can play at a level that is test quality.

He's looking at somewhere around $200-$250k a season to play in Australia vs the reported $500k to go to France. That's clearly a massive difference and an offer that is very hard to turn down.

The contract differential for next season surely shows the how meaningless the "buy them back" comment is. If we match or go close to the $500k for 2024 onwards do you really think that generates a discount for his services going forward or are you just paying the market rate for the player for each year that you pay for their services?

Interesting that Charlie Savala has moved to Northampton Saints from Edinburgh. Wonder if @Highlander35 can shed any light on this. Don't think he got capped for Scotland despite being in their squad. Would he still be in conversation for Scotland at Edinburgh or is his move closing the book (for now) on that possibility?

tl;dr Ben Healy + BK = No opportunity for gametime at Edinburgh for Charlie: at 23 with little injury history and 30-odd caps it's make or break time, particularly when he's that far back in the international pecking order. It's not over, but he needs to show more by the end of the season if he wants to be a test player.

Full rambles:

He looked on his way out early last season when the BK @ 10 experiment was in full flight, but injuries to the back three forced Kinghorn there and Savala stepped up: not anything to suggest he was ready for the international game, but something you could build towards.

I think the loan is an acknowledgement if that at 23 with 30-odd "First Class" games under his belt it's quite close to make or break as a international quality professional for him, and that he's not going to get that opportunity at Edinburgh: as having Healy and Kinghorn in the XV means that there's more value in having two outside backs on the bench than committing to an out and out second stand off.

He's not really in the conversation for Scotland beyond a break glass scenario. At an absolute minimum, Russell, Healy, Hastings and BK are ahead of him for the Scotland 10 Jersey. I think in an ideal world Townsend and the SRU would love to pinch Fin Smith from England too. Ross Thompson has gotten heavy SRU backing, despite being on the outer at Glasgow, and Tom Jordon (similar story to Charlie Gamble) will be eligible by the middle of the Autumn Internationals next year, if I've got my timings right.

Lots of work to do, but the type of player Glasgow and Edinburgh need in squads: capable at the URC level, particularly when not coming up against Full Strength Leinster/Munster/Stormers etc. Scottish Qualified, bit of point of difference in some aspect of game that makes higher representation a possibility.

I don't know if and where he'd fit over here. Maybe he'd be a better option than Strachan at the Rebels, doing a little bit of what the Brumbies did with Debreczeni and Lolesio? But I don't think he's someone that you're missing out on having around here. Having said that, what do I know? I didn't and kind of still don't really, rate Lambert all that much and the fact Glasgow prioritised playing Nathan McBeth over him, who isn't a particularly great player either suggests the SRU was on the same wavelength, but has somehow catapulted himself into Wobbly conversation.

Maybe this kind of rattling of the cage is the kind of kick that the ACT Govt needs to invest in some proper facilities. AFL and Cricket leverage their position so much better then rugby/NRL have, especially in Canberra.
Now that there's been announced a "second division" in Oz soccer the last few days, Canberra's the largest city without an A-League or 2D side. Even Wollongong's getting a top level soccer team! This football development's surely a major incentive to build a decent rectangular stadium in Canberra to be used by soccer, league and union. If the ACT government can find the funds to develop Manuka Oval to be used by a Sydney AFL team on a (very) part-time basis plus a PM's XI and a few WBBL matches every year it can rustle up the readies for two permanent ACT teams and the prospect of a third.

I've called long and loud for the ACT government to build a copy of the Forsyth Barr Stadium on the current pool site next to the Canberra Casino. It's a no brainer.

Problem is they reckon a new stadium won't fit on that site. The new stadium will be at Bruce again, current discussion is whether it will be a refurb, a knockdown rebuild on the same spot, or build it on a different spot at the AIS (allowing them to still use the current stadium during construction)

Auckland team owned by the bloke who also owns the Golden Knights in the NHL and Bournemouth so he’s got cash for days.

The 2nd tier is meant to start with 8 and go to 10 by the year after. They had 32 teams interested and 26 submit applications. I personally know a couple of guys that played for some of these teams and they got paid a lot more than Rugby First Graders.

Canberra don’t need a massive stadium but it needs a quality one. The current capacity is perfect although does it limit any future world cups in rectangular sports. Parramatta is a great viewing stadium from every spot. Just get a roof on the thing and you’ve nailed it.

Raiders need one about double the size of what the brums need & half of that what a soccer club would need. Maybe an indoor one where a sheet comes down at 1 end for brums games

Fantastic try from Yato who absolutely humilates Lolesio and Toulon. Feel bad for Noah there but solace in that at least he wasn't the fullback who was so shit scared of tackling Yato that he fell for a dummy to no one. Also Yato was more Wyn Jones' man than Noah's.

I also 'attempt' to tackle our massive islander friends by limply grabbing at their shirt sleeves. Its just a game, no need to get hurt.

last game of his french sojourn too. He was already thinking about watching the white lotus s2 on the flight back.

Has anyone been keeping tabs on how Lolesio's been going? (aside from getting embarrassed by flankers)
I've watched a few of his recent games, currently watching the latest. I reckon a 6.5 or 7/10. By no means flawless, does some good stuff, kicks his goals. But he's also dropped a few cold, kicked out on the full, tendency to offload in trouble to someone in a worse spot. The commentators seem to think he's gone well. Not begging him to stay but he gets mentioned quite a bit.

oki watched the whole game, Lolesio was perfect off the boot with some pretty difficult kicks. With a slightly worse kicker Toulon wouldn't have won the game, so big kudos for nailing that part.

Other player who had a ripper of a game was Fainga'a. Bloke was everywhere, perfect lineout throws, good tackles, played for 85 minutes with a run down the wing in the 80th. Great performance. Unfortunate that he knocked the ball on over the try line in the 85thminute to lose the game lol.

Aside from Fainga'a, Clermont also had Newsome and Simmons and Miles Amatosero finish the game together in the 2nd row.

Make it fit. If a few streets around the south-east corner of Civic have to be rerouted, so be it. A copy of FBS right next to Civic would be a massive boost to Canberra's social life.

It's unfortunate that they've gone against the wishes of almost everyone in that decision... the proposal put forward established that the roads would not be an issue.
