well injuries to buchanen, browning, gill, genia, quade, tapuai & turner has taken a bit of a bite out of our star power - but with players like kerevi, kuridrani and vauulu still got plenty of strike power out wide

With no Quade or Ben Lucas they were always going to have to bring in another 10. Good to see that both the young 10's who have stood out in Premier Grade (and Jake Mac in his U20 opportunities) have received first chance to impress.

Front row is what I think a were already thinking. Pretty strong I'd say.
2nd row obviously a little weaker with the loss of Buchanan for this week but Kotze is a pretty bloody good player in his own right, maybe just not quite as good at line outtime.

The back row is obviously a case of what was going to be a strength is now not so much. No Gill or Browning seriously reduces the on-ball threat posed by the city back row. Gunny is good, particularly as a link player and obviously rated at QRU but he's probably doesn't offer the same threat on the ground as others. Korczyk at 6 is an interesting call, you could certainly argue that one but maybe it's a case of on the balance of who's fit and their injury time lines he is the best option as a specialist six. Great line out player and defender though.

Samu at 12 is also interesting. If taps ankle is as serious as it sounds it may be that he'll spend most of the NRC there, which could be good for his development and for the Reds depth next year. We'll have to wait and see. Parker probably earned his opportunity with his display in the GF but you'd expect him to probably make way for Turner or something when he comes back but he has a chance to try and make it his spot.

Happy for all the Tigers, especially Chucky and Toby, well earned for the years of prem grade.

Glad our front row is strong, because that looks like the only place Sydney Stars could threaten us (Tilse, Ryan).

I reckon we will roll them. Gunn, Kerevi and Kuridrani to rip up.

That Stars front row (as Sydney Uni) got towelled up by the Southern front row a few weeks back.

That Stars front row (as Sydney Uni) got towelled up by the Southern front row a few weeks back.

You'll find many changes in the tight five from that day to the side taking the field on Thursday night.

Against Souths that weekend;
-Gerard Ellis (London Irish loaned him to Uni to gain experience in the front row after winning Young player of the year award in 2013-2014 season as an open side flanker)
- Tom Boidon (A makeshift second rower who is normally a blindside flanker now off to France)
- Jordan Chapman (Played lower grades through the year and was given an opportunity through hard work) although all great players, they are not experienced in the tight five and University as a result suffered in their set piece that day.

This Thursday you'll see towering lock Ryan Wilson who is close to 120kgs at 6ft5 and Southern Districts lock Andrew Leota pack down together. Add in former Uni colt now a USA Eagle Tom Coolican and the tight 5 will have more experience and size than the one that took the pitch at University Oval few weeks ago.

In regards to memberships I'm pretty sure anyone who goes to a game will be counted as a Reds member for 2014. If you flicked over the channel and caught a few seconds of play they used you in their membership count. I can't see that stopping with the NRC.

I'm interested to see how Kerevi goes at 12, I personally am not a fan. From memory he hasn't played there at club level. His skill set of being a strong ball runner who has the ability to push outside of players becomes negated a bit by playing him in the tighter channel. It really doesn't do much for his development as it seems the Reds are keen on utilizing him at 13 where he belongs.

I'd be surprised if they counted NRC crowd attendance in the 2014 membership numbers, the reds season is finished and those numbers would be much more useful in the 2015 count ;)

I think it's a case of getting the ball in his hands as much as possible. I like Toby White at 13. He has been going great for Easts over the last few years with no interest from above. Glad he gets a chance. I think Kerevi will get plenty of game time at 13 as the season progresses.

Agreed, they can start the season on 10,000 and reach their goal of 200K for the year.

Yeah the late injury to tapuai probably changed the plans a bit, forcing them to reshuffle the centres. I'd expect them to try out multiple combinations as the season progresses.

I'm pretty happy with the team named for Thursday night. They should start the season with a win and build some confidence for the following 7 games.

Probably not a bad option to put Kerevi in a position where he needs to be a bit of a ball player at a level below Super Rugby.

Might give him a more complete skill set at 13 for the Reds next year.

Not to pigeon hole a player too much but some simply aren't built to be ball players. Obviously a varied skill set can be helpful but in a sense it can also give players too many options when they should be focusing on playing their role - in Kerevi's case he's a strong ball carrier and strike weapon out wide.

I'm all for player development but I don't see the point in changing someones playing style.

I'm not suggesting changing his style. He'd be a better 13 though if he could add a better passing game to the skills he already has.

I doubt it's about any sort of drastic change to his style, just giving him a more complete skill set. How many times have you seen AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and other outside centres criticised for not passing the ball?
