A head coach role at a Mitre 10 Cup side wouldn't necessarily be a backwards step though. The likelihood in an NZ situation is that the prospective coach would have probably done that first, rather than working for 5 years overseas.

Chris Boyd was assistant coach at the Sharks in South Africa before he went home and served his coaching apprenticeship as head coach of Wellington in the ITM Cup.

As much as we hate to acknowledge it in Australia, development pathways aren't just for the players.

We won't reach that point if coaches keep leapfrogging it..

If his "5 years" of coaching in Japan is that valuable, then surely he has a lot to offer an NRC team, why should they be devoid of better coaching.

It is changing though. The NRC is offering a domestic pathway to professional coaching for the first time.

The NRC shouldn't be devoid of better coaching but it also has to get to a point where it has the pulling power to attract good coaches and be a comparable or better pathway to becoming an Australian Super Rugby coach than going overseas and doing what Hewat has done.

Currently we are in the first generation of locally developed coaches with a group of Wessels, Stiles, Larkham, Grey, McKellar etc. Clearly there are some pretty mixed results in that group.

You don't achieve this pulling power by recruiting those from overseas coaching positions, especially one which hasn't offered a history of credible development.

If players aren't allowed to play the off-season in Japan because the ARU wants the best players in Australia, then logic suggests the same should be true for coaches. Good coaching is a force multiplier, if Hewat is a good coach then a season or two in the NRC as head coach has tangible benefits for the Brumbies long term anyway.

If the money doesn't exist, then like I've said previously, that's an issue the ARU need to rectify. Get rid of one $800k/annum player and chuck the 8 best uncontracted coaches on $100k/annum each and have them coaching in the NRC and U20s.

I cant see why with more alignment that the NRC coaches are the assistants for the professional teams. Giving them genuine Head Coaching experience. They should also look to replicate the NZ model with the u20s. Three coaches each year with a HC and two assistants. Two years of being an assistant and the final year being the head coach before moving on.

Not sure about another lock. Arnold, Carter and Enever are all top quality Super Rugby and above locks, while Ben Hyne and Tom Cusack could also adequately cover in times of need.

Would like to see the mid field area strengthened though.

Edit : Darcy Swain will also probably be in the mix somewhere as a developing lock and wouldn't disappoint if called upon.

I bloody hope we've got Banks, haven't felt as confident in a fullback since we were playing AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) there.

Are there issues with K.Hunt?

Yes. Three.

  1. Playing full back does not fit in with someones "master plan".
  2. Being arguably one of the two other better 15 options than the current incumbent national option is unacceptable and career limiting due to some of the reasons below.
  3. He has been able to step up showing he his diversity, skills, abilities and adaptability at the highest level with a lessor reputation, lower level of exception and lower price than a certain other ex AFL player "draw card".
:p

and... he isn't actually signed for 2018 yet either... unlikely to be heading anywhere, most overseas clubs have done their recruiting for 2018, but you never know with the ARU.
