Just heard McKellar on 666, talked about a few things that I found interesting:
  • Team meeting this week was all about converting opportunities, they're willing to risk creating less for the security of converting more.
  • The Hawera-Lilo 10-12 pairing has been on his mind since he saw Hawera's trial form, it was tough to measure Hawera's form last year without seeing what Lilo could do, and the change has been forced by the need to get better distribution to the players out wide (indictment of Lilo or Godwin?).
  • Apart from that, the non-injury changes have been made off the back of the Brumby Runners game last week, lots of interest in the form shown in those games as they struggle to find the best players and combinations in a side of just under 40 people.

Just heard McKellar on 666, talked about a few things that I found interesting:
  • Team meeting this week was all about converting opportunities, they're willing to risk creating less for the security of converting more. The problem with this statement is that we are not creating genuine opportunities. I wonder what he is defining as an opportunity as it must be very broad.
Playing on his mind yet it takes how many games and how many losses? Most pundits could see the same thing and have been suggestion Hawera start @10. Comparing form was easy if you could watch TV as we could see Lilo playing in Ulster. If he really wanted to know he would have pulled Lilo back earlier to see how he interacted / combined with players (his decision and fault). The going out wide plan when you become obsessed with it (main focus as McKellar wants) is what is skinning the Tahs (Folau moved to the wing now), skinned the Bulls last night. Its the same plan as the Rebels are using. It is a part of every teams game plan but its all about how much you use it. It why we have wingers. This is just hot air BS when you have no idea what else to say reinforced by saying the specific players he wants to go to (Tevita and Henry), both of which are easy sells for his spiel.
  • Apart from that, the non-injury changes have been made off the back of the Brumby Runners game last week, lots of interest in the form shown in those games as they struggle to find the best players and combinations in a side of just under 40 people. Absolute BS. These players showed the same form in the pre-season trials. The key issue here is that half the Brumbies fans and causal spectators would have made the same cahnges a few games ago. He selected on name and reputation hoping individual talent would produce results for him. He chose not to select based on form and a game plan made up of players. Pure ass covering .
What the above is demonstrating is a coach with no clue. He has had access to same players since the season started, the information was available and even the pundits have seen it and been saying wrong selections and game plan. He made poor choices and is not sure about what he is doing. He has all off season but is cobbling together a plan 2 weeks out when Lilo joins the camp. That's just culpable.

Back to the wall and desperate with not much to lose and forced to, he makes changes to his selections and decisions including game plan then tries to justify it by blaming players etc.

I warned about this in the Tuesday Top 5 before the season kicked off:

The Brumbies are at risk of being the underperformers again. So much potential mixed with such hamstrung ways. If McKellar can break the mould and let the young talent loose they will be entertaining (again) and really push for the top of the table. McKellar is the coach at highest risk to select his way out of success.

Regardless if the results improve his tenure needs to reviewed.

He also need to stop taking!

There wasn't a clear plan to our attack, and we lacked discipline, but we kicked our first goals since Japan and we won the game. That's an improvement.

Josh Mann-Rea out for the season. Needs surgery on his hamstring.

Could be tough for him to come back from given his age.

That's tough. Real shame. I really hope he can get back but it will be a lot of work.

I have confidence in Fainga'a, Abel, and McInerney to see us through, though it's a terrible loss. Luke Holmes as emergency cover once more? :p

Nah. We should be on the blower to Sam Thomas & TP Luteru and get them training. Pretty sure there must be some other decent hookers in the JiD?

Or, should we be asking if the Force will loan us Scoble as cover?

I'd say that, potential injuries aside, that's the end of Godwin's season for us. He's not like a Fardy who is performing at his peak; his game time is also his development time, and we should be developing other players and other combinations.

I agree about Godwin. I think his playing time is now up in Australia. They should release him immediately and start thinking future. We already have better options at 12 behind Christian and we also need to consider that there is very strong possibility that he will also be leaving at the end of this season.

I feel a bit for him, when he first came onto the scene everyone was hyping him up to be the next star and since then his career has just petered out into mediocrity. Hopefully for him he will be more suited to the Northern Hemisphere style and he’ll find his feet.

His still quite young maybe playing up there will improve his game.

I think his signing at the Brumbies may have been a double edged sword. Good for his development but also prolonging the inevitable move while sadly reinforcing that he just isn't at the level he was hyped to.

I found this very interesting and revealing about the damaged caused by the Brumbies Board war.

ActewAGL has not been a Brumbies sponsor since a Canberra rugby war erupted in 2016, with relationships pushed to breaking point.

But the parties have forged a new partnership, led by a commitment to women's sport.

"It's wonderful to be back with the Brumbies ... ActewAGL has had a strong commitment to women's sport over the last 20 years and this is the next step," said corporate affairs director Paul Walshe.

"It was disappointing when the partnership fell apart. I've been working with [Brumbies chief executive Michael Thomson] for the past six months in trying to get back together.

"We support the Raiders, the Capitals, the Giants and we should support the Brumbies as well."

The Brumbies are still working to fill their sponsorship portfolio for the Super Rugby season, with the club expected to sign more major partners in the coming weeks.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/rug...rship-deal-with-actewagl-20180320-h0xr2r.html

So, two big ACT corporate sponsors (AQUIS and ActewAGL) stepped away from supporting the Brumbies team directly as a result of the board’s actions. Aquis withdrew but at least supported community rugby. Now finally ActewAGL has returned to the Brumbies but only for the women and the academy not the main team.

It’s good to hear that Thompson is working hard to mend fences. But still it’s an inescapable fact that the damage to both to brand itself and revenue raising opportunities continue to haunt the Brumbies and repair work is still ongoing nearly 2 years on and may continue for the foreseeable future.

There is a lesson to be learned from this not only by the Brumbies but Aussie rugby in general.

But silver lining - good to see the women’s team and the Academy with sponsors.

If Lilo leaves we may need to consider future options at 12. Depending on how unloved he actually is (yet to be determined), IMHO one player that could be a good one to target is Duncan Paia’aua.

.

I think the AQUIS sponsorship and their reasons for changing the commitment were a little more complicated then just the boards actions.

Like the Gold Coast Titans, they had clauses built in which activated extensions or downgrades depending on government decisions over the pokies and casinos.

I think Aquis also owns plus 500 which is the current major sponsor I believe it was a move to get the government more on side.. Alot more then the board around that deal..
