I don't think it will add much either. He isnt much better than some of the uncontracted fly-halves in Oz anyway.

All it will do is tickle the fancy of some Englishmen living in Melbourne that would probably go to see the game anyway.

He's so young, and he's looking towards being the prime English Flyhalf within the next few years, I think he will have some national pride in him, can't see him making the switch. Melbourne probably would appeal to a lot of them, good culture, nice city life, sporting town and generally nice weather (for him at least!)

Melbourne will be having talks with every agent in Europe, just about.

It would fanciful to think that Cipriani wouldn't make himself available for 6N next year as that squad would form the basis of the 2011 RWC squad. As I have mentioned before: it is a pity that Melbourne is going to start in the S15 season before a RWC instead of the S15 season after one.

Someone indicated that he was a dud player. That is far from the truth as we will remember from his playing against Oz on our 2008 EOYT. He has just come back from injury and was rusty from the bench in his first game back from the bench. Then IIRR, he played fullback - but the 3rd game he was back to some good form. It was too late for consideration for the Englnd 6N squad though.

He would be terrific in S15 rugby and better than in GP rugby.

Danny Cipriani has made up his mind to move to Australia and join the Melbourne Rebels, The Times has been told.

The fallen idol of English rugby has decided to cut his losses and commit himself to the new Super 15 franchise in Victoria. It is understood that his decision to make a fresh start 10,000 miles away was relayed to Rod Macqueen, the Rebels head coach, yesterday. In confirming his interest in Cipriani on Wednesday, Macqueen had said how highly he rated him.

Once details on a likely two-year contract worth more than £200,000 a season are confirmed and a formal offer made, and provided there are no last-minute hitches, he will travel Down Under in October with Kelly Brook, his actress girlfriend. In doing so he will become the first England international to play club rugby in Australia in the professional era. His capture will be a coup for the team, who hope to attract up to five leading players from Britain.

In the 24 hours since The Times broke the story of the Melbourne Rebels’ interest in the London Wasps fly half, events have moved rapidly.

Negotiations have been continuing with Gerard Tyrell, Cipriani’s lawyer at the London firm of Harbottle & Lewis. Cipriani spent yesterday at Twickenham with the England Saxons squad, for whom he has been selected to play at full back — not fly half — against Italy A in Treviso on Sunday.

For Cipriani, 22, who not so long ago was “the future” of English rugby, that was confirmation enough that he had reached a dead end in England, at least for the time being. A comment yesterday by Stuart Lancaster, the Saxons coach, can only have reinforced that message. “He’s got pace and as a broken-field runner, there aren’t many better,” Lancaster said. “But like all young players, he’s still developing and learning about the game.”

Cipriani’s readiness to turn his back on England is, on the face of it, staggering but perhaps, when put into context, not surprising. The Times has learnt that he had in principle made up his mind several days ago after being told by a close associate that Martin Johnson apparently did not consider him part of his plans for the immediate future, including the World Cup in New Zealand next year. The England team manager is said to have made it clear that he did not “trust” Cipriani.

Armed with that knowledge, the player, who last week had met John Connolly, the former Australia coach responsible for Rebels’ recruitment, realised that however well he performed, he would not be able to alter Johnson’s perception of him. Thus the decision in the end was straightforward.

A source close to Cipriani said: “Danny had to make sure that he was making the decision for the right reasons, that he was not running as far away as he could, but that the move would be good for him and his game in the long term. You have to think that even if he stays there two years, he will still only be 24 and with his best years ahead of him, including maybe two World Cups. When you add everything up it makes sense. It could be the making of him.”

However, it may also signal the end of him as a figure in English rugby. One cannot help but think that the laid-back Australian lifestyle could prove altogether too alluring and more suited to his nature and demeanour.

His departure will be a bitter blow to London Wasps both commercially and in playing terms, but perhaps Tony Hanks, the director of rugby, will not be surprised. Cipriani is out of contract this summer and that he had stalled on signing a new, improved offer was a clear sign that he believed that his future lay elsewhere, be it in France or farther afield.

Stade Français’s offer was considered too low and Perpignan felt that Cipriani was not the right man for them at present. With Paul Sackey rumoured to be attracting the attention of big-spending Toulon, uncertain times lie ahead for Wasps, the former English and European champions.

............... it is not fanciful at all.

If he does get to Melbourne it would be great for him out of the fishbowl and he cold walk down the street without being noticed.

I hope he does come - it would be a coup for Melbourne and good for Cipriani in the context mentioned. I always said his rugby was more suited to our Oz type game.

Surprising, though it makes a lot of sense for him. I guess there are still a lot of ifs and maybes about it though. If England has a poor 6N Martin Johnson will probably be out on his ear, which might open the WC door for Cipriani with his successor (or at least open the door on an open door). It seems his decision is based mostly on the fact that he knows he has no chance of playing international rugby under the current regime.

I reckon it could well be the making of him - just as going north can round off our blokes (playing in the mud, learning to kick) so too he'd finally get the chance to develop some of his natural talent, without the spotlight.

Would mean leaving these behind though

Rebels squash Cipriani rumours

Danny Cipriani: No Rebel yet

Melbourne Rebels coach Rod Macqueen says reports suggesting the fledgling Super rugby franchise has made an offer to out-of-favour England back Danny Cipriani are 'premature'.

The enigmatic 22-year-old was one of several northern-hemisphere players to meet with Rebels assistant coach Damien Hill in London last week, fuelling speculation England's out-of-favour fly-half is set to join the Melbourne-based franchise in 2011.

But while Macqueen concedes the London Wasps star would be well suited to Super rugby, he insists reports that contract talks have already begun are well wide of the mark.

"It's more speculation than fact, and there's no doubt we've spoken to a number of players over in England and we're really going through a sorting-out process to see where our priorities lie," Macqueen told Sportal.

"But it's still very early days and it'd be premature to suggest that we would be offering him a contract.

"I think that the speculation's been kicked up a lot more than it deserves at this stage."

Quizzed on the interest level of those players who met with Hill, Macqueen replied: "There seems to be an enthusiasm to play Super 15 football and obviously that's good from our perspective. And we've gone to great lengths to make it quite clear that we're really after players that are coming for the right reasons, players who are going to have the right culture and that's probably our main objective when talking to players."

The Rebels are permitted to sign up to 10 overseas players for the 2011 season - eight more than the four existing Australian provinces - in a bid to ensure they are competitive in their debut season.

But the World Cup-winning coach reinforced his preference for Australian-born players.

"From our point of view we've made it very clear that our priority is Australian players and we're just trying to sort out that situation at the moment to see who's available in Australia," he said.

"So that will be our priority but we really did need to know who's available in Europe and England and that's why Damien Hill's just been over there.

"We really are looking more for Australian players - players who are eligible to play for the Wallabies.

"And certainly that's got to be first and foremost in our thoughts because Australian rugby really does need more depth."

You do present two compelling points there.

Of course if his rugby star doesn't rise again she'll probably dump him anyway, celebrity that she is.

The cunning old fox. And some reckon he's not trying to drive Cipriani's price down.

Just had a look at Ms Brook's portfolio. I've had to get a cold spoon and whack the old feller to make it go down.

Cipriani has a huge press following in England. They love and trash him at the same time as is their way. Rumours have it he's a complete egotist. A move to Melbourne under Macqueen would do his career wonders IMO.

He's just hiking his fee up, there's an article over at TSF where he denies it's on the cards, Rodney denies it's an option for them etc.
