There is no need for this data retention. If there are grounds to suspect somebody of illegalities, get a warrant and intercept the phones etc. Thousands of such warrants are granted every year to Law enforcement agencies now.

If there are no grounds to suspect the government has no business sticking their nose in anybodies personal affairs on a fishing expedition.

On even more worrying note is the quotes attributed to the heads of the CIA and NSA which they indicated they "killed people on the basis of metadata".

The more that comes out the more that Snowden et al are being proved correct.
