The coalition is doing all the stuff they criticised labour over for six years. It's like carbon copy.

Policy on the run, poor communication, school yard errors, internal disagreements being played out in the media, a prime minister going missing instead of standing up and fronting the issues, etc etc

The only pollie who can hold their head up high right now is Julie Bishop and that goes for all sides of politics.

General incompetence appears to be an infectious disease in Canberra.

Time for a new moderate party in Australian politics. Centre left or centre right. Take your pick. Labour and Liberal are too fucking caught up in their own internal bullshit with their heads down. Pfitzy can start it. He's already got half the charter written in this thread.

Aside from your comment on Julie Bishop, who is no better then the others, I agree that there isn't any politician on either side who has impressed at all. There is some talent on both sides but they are doing a damn good job up keeping behind the bushel.

Lots of other stuff that can be done but they are political suicide.

No rates concessions for older people who live in houses over a certain value (so I don't have to subsidise their rates while they have their fourth meal out this week, go watch another movie today and opera house tomorrow).

Private schools to pay full stamp duty. Whats a load of shit this one is.

Lower stamp duty on the family home but increase it on investment properties.

etc etc there's plenty more.

We'll agree to disagree on Julie. Smart, tough, compassionate, looks comfortable on the world stage and not like she's trying to prove something. She seems to really live to serve. I like her.

One of the big problems we have is that all the worst taxes from an efficiency perspective are state based but the states can't afford to drop them without the GST being raised which is a federal issue.

Stamp duty should ultimately be replaced with a broad based land tax on everything which would encourage people to downsize when the kids move out etc. rather than staying in a house bigger than they require because costs to move are high.

A fundamental principle of tax theory is that the best thing to do is tax things that don't move.

  • Stamp duty should only apply on sales where the buyer is not an Australian Citizen/permanent resident in order to discourage speculation.
  • Family home should be included in pension means testing, but testing should be adjusted upwards to account for this.
  • A modest efficient national land tax should be added to fill the void in revenue left by removing stamp duty.
  • Planning laws should be modified with a focus on energy efficiency, efficient use of space, proximity to infrastructure and overall simplification.
  • And negative gearing can fuck right off.
Do that and you would go a long way towards fixing the structural problems with Australia's housing and rental markets. You'd also free up a lot of capital that could be better spent on consumables, like bledisloe tickets and beer.

Furthermore you would also increase the effectiveness of RBA monetary policy because they wouldn't have to factor in hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of people with unaffordable mortgages on overvalued property every time they want to change rates.

Read the Henry review 138 recommendations to ALP and we got one useless tax.

All tax needs to be reviewed and changed every few years as things change. Australians hate change.

The federal gov should reschedule a couple of the softer narcotics and allow states the option to either legalise and tax, or piss their money away on extra policing/court expenses/dole for people with convictions who can't get a job.

People are going to use drugs anyway, better the money goes into infrastructure spending than the hands of gangs.

A large portion of the population loves change.

It's the reason why Australians adopt stuff like new banking tech faster than most other places. Same with downloading content rather than watching it on tv.

Those in power have a vested interest in not changing. Abbott maintain the status-quo, and in return Murdoch prints nice things about him in the newspaper, large miners keep donating to the re-election fund etc etc.

I'm sure it happens on both sides of politics to some extent so I won't point too many fingers.

Par for the course.

Eric Abetz blaming someone else for his fuck-up.

When he take some self-responsibility?

When will the Coalition learn that science will always triumph ideology?

SOP for the Coalition:-
  1. If in trouble, blame someone else.
  2. It's the public's fault if they don't understand a plan/programme/policy/etc.
  3. What you thought that you heard about a plan/programme/policy/etc. is not what the Coalition meant.

We have embraced technological change. Not change.

Remeber Keatings option C was a GST and the Hawke cabinet had a fit, Hewson laost an election. It took 20 years to bring that small change into our economy.

Runner also seems obsessed with the past.

His posts often deal with history - maybe he's a historian.

It is often said that those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it (before he says it), but this is now, not yesterday.

Are you just blowing smoke up Pfitzy's arse because he has offered you a cabinet position? :)
