Melbourne Rebels 2024

So grim.

it’s such a pity because from Rebels’ support and crowds you’d think rugby union in Vic is a dead end. But there are so many fans here, just look at a sold out MCG. rebels fans is a small circle that sits within the much larger circle of Victorians who are rugby fans.

dunno who to blame there, RV failing to engage those fans. The fans for not caring for local. Bit late now.

Not defending Rugby Victoria here but my guess around the level of compliance of incorporated associations lodging annual financial statements with the relevant body (Consumer Affairs Victoria, NSW Fair Trading etc.) would be close to zero.
My local tennis club's financials are up to date with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

But that is the same as everywhere in Aus. There is support for the game just not the Australian game. I know young lads with no connection to Europe who follow the 6 nations but will not watch the Wallabies let alone rebels

Not sure if this is the case in Vic but in Qld your lodgements need to be up to date to apply for a lot of grants. In some cases that’s virtually the only criteria.

I’m sure plenty are still behind but I know it does help encourage clubs to stay up to date.

Bit like how soccer has lots of fans here, but 99% of them won't cross the road to watch an A-league game.

The Melbourne Rebels board is making a desperate bid to save the club, seeking an extra 120 days to arrange a debt deal to avoid it almost certainly going into liquidation.

Rugby Australia’s legal team has been approached for the time extension, but the governing body has already signalled the club’s current entity will crumble under the weight of more than $20 million debt.

Any delay would allow more time for the Rebels’ board to mount a claim against Rugby Australia, which it has claimed owed up to $8 million of the club’s debt.

But creditors, including Rugby Australia and the Australian Taxation Office, which was owed $11.6 million, would have to agree to an extension.

Just seen this in The Herald tonight - doesn't really say anything new though?

Is it possible the rebels don't even play this year? They get no crowds. Already in debt. By the end of the season they will just be more and more in debt.

Even if a wealthy fool tips in $20 m to rescue the club today - that wont be enough to keep it running into the future unless they replace the ex board and hire a CEO who can develop revenue streams other than begging for handouts from RA or crazy rich people

Or be involved in a competition that gives that operator at least a decent chance of long term survival.

They'd have to drink the kool-aid that is RA and Super. Even then they are not going to step in and accept debts that can be written off through wrapping up the Rebels.

For all the opprobrium, it's the same for RA.

The board seeking that extra 120 days is new.

It's a very big brain strategic move from them - make a claim against RA for $8 million when they're one the entities you need the sign off from to get this extension.

I guess if RA don't grant the 120 days it signals their underlying intentions?

Says the ATO need to sign off also? Can't see why they would disagree if it helps get them paid?
