National U/16 Championships 2012

tells us the following:

The National U16s Championships provides the first taste of open national level competition and state/territory representation for our best U16 year old players in Australia. The assembly of the best U16 year old players in the country provides an important performance benchmarking platform for players, coaches and professional high performance staff.

The Championships are conducted by the ARU in late September/October each year in either Sydney or Brisbane. The Championships schedule includes an intensive match schedule as well as important off field education for players, coaches, managers, medical staff and referees ensuring the week is a quality introduction to the levels of performance and development required to play, coach, manage and referee at the highest levels.

The purpose the Championships is to provide an effective quality platform for:

a) the selection and development of each state/territories talented young players, coaches, managers, referees and other officials;
b) the recruitment and retention of players, coaches, referees, managers and other officials;
c) the benchmarking of talented U16 players;
d) assisting with the improvement of playing standards and development of the game in all participating states/territories.

Teams competing at the National U16s Championships are:

Division 1
ACT, NSW1, NSW2, QLD1, QLD2, WA, VIC

Division 2
SA, NT, TAS, National Indigenous

Each state and territory team has a process for selection that includes club and school level, affiliate and association and regional and state representative trial programs.

The Championships crown a national champion team at Division 1 and Division 2 level as well as recognizing outstanding player contributions to team performance (‘Best Team Man’). Many players from these Championships will graduate to higher level development and representative programs.

There appears to be an obvious error in the Div 1 team listing in that there will be three teams representing NSW at the Championships, Schools, Country and Sydney Juniors, not NSW 1 and NSW2. A 7 team Division 1 competition also does not seem to make any sense.

Anyhow, I am looking for information to put together a couple of blog posts on the champs.
I am looking for Gaggerlanders outside NSW who can provide me with background info in the various state teams and the Indigenous selections. When are the trials being held, when will teams be finalised, what trials have been played, and what are planned etc. Send me a PM with any contribution you want to make, or post relevant info here and I will pick it up for the blog.

The three-day National Indigenous Under 16 Rugby Union Championships commence on Saturday 11 August at Currumbin Rugby Union Club, Bienvenue Dr, Currumbin QLD 4223.

Run by the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (LMRDT), the Championships are both a representative pathway for the participants but also an opportunity for the school-aged kids to come together and share their diverse culture and distinct backgrounds in a healthy and supportive environment.

The Championships commence on Saturday where all participants will take part in numerous cultural activities before matches kick off on Sunday and finals are held on Monday. The Championships also provide a pathway for its participants into the National Indigenous Team, who will compete at the National Under 16 Schoolboy Championships in Sydney from September 30 - October 5.

Northern Queensland wins 2012 Santos National Indigenous Under 16 Championship

The Championship, which sees Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players from state, territory and affiliate representative teams come together to compete, was secured by the Northern Queensland team after defeating Southern Queensland 19 - 12 in the final match yesterday.

Player of the Tournament was awarded to Moses Serevi from St Peters Lutheran College Brisbane with James Wedders Leece from Duval High School in Armidale winning the Best Forward or Back Award.

On past history, the competition organisers seem to try to orchestrate a QLD vs NSW grand final, or at least have the top ranked QLD team in a different pool to the top ranked NSW team. If two QLD teams make it to the GF then so be it (and vice versa if NSW Schools end up against SJRU in the GF).

Historically the QLD Red team has been QLD I for both Opens and U16's. At Under 16 level in NSW, it has been all over the place with SJRU being effectively NSW I in some years, and other years NSW Schools have been the de-facto NSW I's. NSW country clouds the issue and while many city centric punters would write them off as NSW III, they often have a number of players who would not be out of place in a NSW I's or NSW II's team.

There will be peace in Afghanistan before the egos at NSW Schools, Sydney Juniors and Country can resolve their differences and allow a NSW I and NSW II and Combined States model that works so successfully at Schoolboys Opens to be adopted for Under 16's.

Yes, I agree. However, I watched the VICs play last year and was very impressed with their size and athleticism. It was only the experience of tough competition they lacked that kept them from playing the final. As it was they thrashed NSW Country 61-26 in the Plate final.

On paper I say the NSW Schools and Sydney Juniors teams are very evenly balanced this year. SJRU looked after NSW Country in Bathurst easily with the coach substituting at will to give all the squad good match time. Therefore I see NSW Country as the weakest local team this year.

You want to be careful comparing results from a 2011 Under 16 cohort with a 2012 Under 16 cohort. Last years U16 results are of little use for this years opens competition as well. In NSW many boys in the opens teams are an extra year older than most of the QLD boys, having competed at Under 16's two years previously, not one as is the case for most of the QLD boys. This year in the Opens it was very nearly a NSW I vs NSW II final. Wouldn't have thought so based on 2011 Under 16 results.

The politics involved at NSW Schools, Country, and Sydney Juniors rep teams vary greatly from year to year as to who gets first pick at the players from the trial games noting that basically the same pool of players rock up to NSW Schools tournament and the Sydney JRU regional tournament for selection to the NSW Schools and Sydney Juniors teams. Consequently trying to determine which team could be considered to be the defacto NSW I team for each particular year is a bit of a lottery unless you have some inside knowledge.

The boys this year were told at the Zone championships that a SJRU would not be chosen until after the NSW Schools team was announced. Some boys played in both, whilst a select few only played in the "Knox tryouts" as they were obviously assured/warranted a place in the NSW Schools team.

A little unfair there.

Many boys in the SJRU and NSW Schools teams played in both SJRU Zone Tryouts and Knox Schools Tryouts.

Three boys did not play in Knox Tryouts for Under 16's because they were in either the ISA or GPS III Opens team who played earlier in the week.

Several boys who were named in SJRU Zone teams declined to attend, perhaps based on prior knowledge of a selection for Schools, or perhaps to force the selectors hand to chose them for schools because they would be ineligible for Juniors if they didn't attend regionals.

To further confuse the mix, there were boys from schools in the country who did not play for NSW Counrty Schools at Knox. There were also boys who were already more or less guaranteed a slot with NSW Counrty Juniors at knox playing for a schools association other than NSW Country Schools.

Despite my frequent rant about the ghost players at State Championships who were not actively part of the SJRU competition, there were some who only played at Knox and made NSW Schools because they were ineligible for SJRU.

Bottom line, it is time for NSW Under 16's to follow a similar model as QLD U16's and opens, and NSW Opens and simply select a NSW I and II team with the rest putting their hat in the ring for a slot for Combined States. That will keep the 8 team competition framework alive, and replicate the Opens champs.

The NSW Schools and SJRU "horse trading" model is an egostroking timewasting nugatory exercise.

I actually agree with you H. My point was it actually appeared that NSW Schools was the NSW 1 side for this year as they had first choice. As a newcomer to this level of rugby and type of rugby it has certainly been an eyeopener to be involved. Learning lots I am Yoda.

I actually agree with you H. My point was it actually appeared that NSW Schools was the NSW 1 side for this year as they had first choice. As a newcomer to this level of rugby and type of rugby it has certainly been an eyeopener to be involved. Learning lots I am Yoda.

I believed that SJRU had the FIRST pick this year. Also there were approx 11 players who overlapped. 2 players only wanted to play Schools (and they were informed as early as April that they were in the schools team and don't worry about State Champs etc) and one of these players played SC anyway.

In my opinion the 2 teams as selected are almost even in skill levels. It will be interesting whether injuries hit the teams in the meantime forcing 3rd string players getting a call-up.

George, I was told by team management that SJRU expected first pick this year but when they all got to the table schools won out with first pick. I agree both teams equally talented, what I've noticed seeing both teams is that schools is a lot bigger(forwards), Whether thats good in the heat of October is any ones guess.
