Let's kick off the week with a bit of nostalgia. From 40 years ago Newington defeat Scots at Stanmore to secure the GPS premiership in 1979. The game was played on Buchanan Oval (not a soccer post in sight). The crowd were louder than any GPS crowd today and the noise/singing/chanting went for the whole game.

Unfortunately the quality of the pictures isn't Sidesteppa quality.

Wouldn’t they kill for a crowd like that at a Newington home game these days.

Yes we would, although they'll get one this week for Back to Newington Day as it's a mandatory attendance for all students. But no soccer in 1979 so the whole of the school pretty much played rugby then.

Steppa. Much appreciated. I can watch this now without Beer Googles.
Good Lord, the Joeys captain lasted ONE tackle and it was the very first.
He then gets up and plays out with the bone of his dislocated thumb sticking through his skin and he makes even more tackles.
    How tough is this bloke???
I felt for the replacement as he had just played 70 minutes and now he was on again.
Lucky for Joeys, we cattle dogs run all day (and all night) if needed.

As a casual observer in this forum and love the positive chat just watched the extensive highlights posted of the Joeys v Riverview game from the weekend and WOW, that Joeys backline is outstanding! From these highlights it seems to all start with the Joeys 9 who gives the backline really good, quick ball from the breakdown and from the set pieces. I saw some feedback from weeks ago that their forwards got tested agains Scots in the trial but against Riverview they looked very strong...Does anyone have any other games highlights? This is great rugby to watch...

Yeah I have really enjoyed watching Joeys this year particularly their backline. Right down to their Third's (and probably beyond) they have a heap of talent and really play rugby the right way. Im hoping Darren Junee brings some of their secret sauce over to Shore this year.

It was part of the process when the GPS rugby reverted to a 1 round competition. A 2 round, 10 week 1sts/2nds worked ok with a 1 round 9 week 3rds competition. But a 5 week 1 round 1sts competition didn't really work with a 9 week 3rds. Some schools also objected to travelling to Armidale with the 3rds.

I gather that Newington agreed to the move rather than instigated it, but there are flow on issues through the age groups which are problematic. It means that B teams are playing C teams etc because whoever the opposition school are playing in 3rds also bring 2 or 3 open teams and 2 or 3 teams in age groups.

There's no easy answer, but really the simplest solution would be to revert to a 2 round competition for 1sts/2nds and all 9 teams play in the 3rds.

I understand you emotion, but this thread isn't for scholarship debate and that's been a forum rule ever since I've been on G&GR. Start another thread and go for your life if you want to.

Just deleted a bunch of posts about scholarships. They are not for this thread.

They weren't bannings, but next one will be.

Seems it’s not just the video quality that has improved dramatically these days.
Check out the body shapes, they’d all get monstered in the 3’s today!
You also forget how technology with the balls has improved the game.

Although I'm not sure that the change in body shapes has made the game better.
