Game 1.

Can't understand this team:

1 Shaun Marsh
2 Mike Hussey
3 Ricky Ponting
4 Michael Clarke
5 David Hussey
6 Cameron White
7 Brad Haddin
8 James Hopes
9 Nathan Bracken
10 Ben Hilfenhaus
11 Shaun Tait.

I don't understand White's selection, and Hussey at the top of the order. White's clearly there as a specialist hitter, he won't bowl more than 10 overs over the 5 games I reckon (hope). So we bat him at 6 and open with Hussey so we can have White down the order? Instead of sacrificing Hussey I'd be opening with Warner, and slipping Mile H into 5 with Dave H at 6. Lets start with firepower and rely on the Husseys to kick things along late. Alternatively open with Hopes. He's wasted at 8. He's much better opening and allowed to go for it (inconsistent I guess however).

Anyway, on the positive side, that's a great attack I reckon. Tait, Bracken, Hilfey and Hopes with work from the Husseys and maybe Clarke.

Yep, White should not be there. He might be able to heave a few, like the other night, but he really isn't good enough to be ahead of the likes of Warner, particularly when he doesn't bowl much anyway.

I agree that the attack does look very good. Especially with David Hussey bowling so well at the moment.

I still think that Hilfenhaus should be in the test team ahead of Siddle and Bollinger.

Nice work by your boys there Paarl. Can't believe we let that one get away from us after Tait smacked Boucher's stumps out! Poor fielding from our blokes it must be said, but no more so that Vaughan Van Jarsfeld who let two big scalps through his fingers.

Have to agree I saw some Alan Donald semi ghosts when Botha tried his outmost best to be a hero in the last few overs. Not much time to celebrate and sunday the next one. If there is one SA Player that play some awesome cricket at the moment it have to be our own little Mitchalls Plainer JP Duminy. It help to grow up fighting for your life and playing cricket but he sure is your worst nightmare at the moment. our Saffers know Albie Morkel can bliksem a cricket ball but pretty good to see this for the first time from him in international level. Think our lot have a problem now where to fit Maccie now. Maybe he & Gibbs should change in the order and it all going to be difficult to make a place for AB. Think he should replace Boucher. Anyway interesting cricket and myself think Taite is a chukker (no, only joking but vokket he do bowl with a lot of speed) Myself still hope van Jaarsveld getting use to international level. The kid was poor in this one but I can promise you he do have a lot of talent and know how to use a bat.

Good luck for sunday!

Its certainly a weird action. They showed a super-slowmo of it and once you see that, its pretty obvious why he straps his elbow so heavily - the strain he puts on it is a bit unnerving.

I'm still not sure about Botha's action, despite being "cleared" by the ICC.

After watching that innings at Bellerive, I remain mystified as to what Cameron White brings to the table. Not really an orthodox batsman, never seems to get bowled yet occupies an all-rounder position. Australia really ballsed-up a chance at a good total. At least James Brayshaw has the guts to say they stunk it up; the others kept going on about the bowling (which was good) but never can actually criticise an Aussie player, and ignored the fact that several dismissals were terribly soft, and the application was pretty ordinary. SA should win this in a canter with our pretty makeshift looking bowling lineup.

Yet they didn't and I missed most of the Saffer innings. They certainly looked good after deciding to bowl and pinning Australia back well to 249. I left the action with them on track to win at just over a run a ball in the 30th. What transpired after that looks like good bowling with the reconditioned ball. Though there were some very soft Saffer dismissals too.

Whoever said (in another thread) that Marsh didn't deserve selection will have to temporarily make do with humble pie - two innings in the 70s is not bad, though you could argue a century was in the offing when he got out very softly.

Geez, how inconsistent is Hilfenhaus from over to over though? Showed in both games. Brilliant to wide pies being smacked to bounaries, and back again.

I guess I have to eat some of my words, but I still think we under-performed and White brings nothing. Agree about Hilfenhaus - he bowled some good stuff, but also some real tripe, and even more so the other night. If he can tighten it up a bit, he'll be a real asset. And we almost threw this one away at the end too, they needed 12 or more an over for the last 4-5, and shouldn't have got close.

As I said in another thread - White shouldn't be anywhere near an Australian jersey. The best we seem to get out of him is a 20-30 run slog every 5 or 6 games.

I also have big concerns about Michael Hussey's current form. He has really been poor all summer, and for me he was the main reason we didn't post a bigger total as he was dismissed very softly on the first ball of the batting power play. It is unacceptable. I think he should be 'rested', although that would leave out team very inexperienced.

Although I agree with Hayden being dropped from the one day squad, it does seem strange when you see how little runs that Hussey has made in all forms recently, that he also wasn't mentioned in these terms.

I expect Tait, Johnson and Hauritz may all come into the team for the next game. I'd also be inclined to add a batsman to the squad in place of White, not sure who though.

Geez it looks horrible to see such a tall man bowl so low the way he does. I swear if I did what he does once I'd probably be a the physio's every day for a week. And the way his elbow rotates right at the end just looks wrong on slo-mo.

Close series so far, but it would be nice to see somebody post a big total.

Pretty interesting SA chasing all the way thus far bar the one T20. Wish they can bat first and see the way the Aussies chase. Not sure if our lot can post a biggie, to many test specialize batsman like Kallis, McKenzie & Amla. Gibbs , JP & AB needs to fire if this will happen. Myself enjoy this series , pretty close this far. Still angry I overslept the second one, thought it will be on Monday our time.

Jeez JP is looking like the find of the summer. He will be a superstar of the game if he keeps going at this rate.

I definately agree, he has been a class act since the first test. Can't wait to see this guy grow into his carrear.

PB had it right thou, the SA team has a bit of work to do for the limited over games. Too many reliable, technical test batsmen have been included in the top order and the middle order has been pressured everytime by poor batting in the top order either from losing wickets or from excessive dot balls.

Turbs a question for you. I know you support India, how do you experiense this battle between SA & Aus compare to India & Aus. Like to know your honest view regarding the spirit on the field and off the the field between the two seriesse.

We hear a lot this side about bad behaviour from the Aussie crowds but apart from a few swearing ledging in the 1st test it sound like Aus & SA players do show some good spirits. Myself know for a fact (Know Brain McMillain quite well and he told me everything in person) that in the old days altho the two teams played hard and sledge hard they seem to be best friends off the field and if they do meet these days they are best of mates.

Dont know about India and myself can understand this.
