The new World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series finale might be moved to South Africa, as well.

$50million boost for Olympic athletes for next 2 years announced by AOC, some of this might flow through to 7’s Rugby and hopefully offset any costs cuts that RA introduce

If the NRL can always top RA's offer to Joseph Sua'ali'i, perhaps a spot at the Olympics in the rugby 7's could be a carrot that money can't buy.

Yeah was reported last week RA are using the Olympics opportunity as a carrot to attract him to rugby. Can’t compete with $500k pa that the Rabbitohs are offering

Ahhhh, yes, you're right.
Plan B (give him time off school to be an Olympian) would take him out of Kings' rugby program.
Starting to look like a lot of hurdles.

My understanding is he wouldn't be playing at Kings next year anyway, he'd be a full time Bunny.

It seems so!

Sevens back on its feet ahead of Tokyo
Wayne Smith, Senior Sport Writer
The Australian, July 14, 2020

The Australian rugby sevens programs, which had been driven to their knees during the COVID-19 pandemic, have been helped back to their feet a year out from the Tokyo Olympics by a one-off funding grant of $2.2m from the Australian Institute of Sport … <snip>
… additional grants of $1.4m to the Australian women … and $800,000 to the men … <snip>

“We put about $3m into the women’s team in the lead-up (to the 2016 Rio Olympics) and with this funding we will at least match that amount,” Australian Sports Commission chairman John Wylie told The Australian.
… without the funding assistance, which takes the overall federal government/AIS contribution to $4.5m, RA would have faced some difficult decisions … <snip>

… [Scott] Bowen said he was still working through various scenarios with his counterparts in New Zealand and Fiji … “We are waiting for any potential bubble that might enable us to play international competition,” …

… If a window can be found for the sevens program, it is likely to be the same as for Test football — October-November, ahead of the opening World Series tournament in Dubai in December. … <snip>

It'll be interesting to see whether the Aussie Women's are released to play NRLW as has been rumoured.. Its a dangerous game to play, for one it gives young players a good quality competition to develop in, but it also gives them a taste of the alternative, and the Aussies Sevens teams loses positive control on their players

You could also look on the positive side in that the mixing could attract NRLW players to 7s with the Olympics (and first hand experiences) being a major pull. Casslick turned into a worldwide star.
