Stellenbosch attacks Paarl

Thu, 10 May 2012 21:26

Paarl Gim have just usurped Paul Roos's top spot on the FNB Top 20 and here they are playing each other in Paarl on Saturday, one of the top school matches in South Africa this weekend.
It is one of the most anticipated game of the local season, when Paul Roos, smarting from two recent home defeats, arrive on a very straightforward mission: to stake an irrefutable claim to the top place in the South African schools hierarchy that the Young Maties carved out for themselves in the early stages of the season.
Sure, Grey (PE) beat them only 23-19 and their mauling by the Tygers (20-22) boiled down to a difference of one conversion, but six victories, five of them by convincing margins, out of seven games at the Grey (PE), Kearsney and Wildeklawer Festivals had already given the nation notice of their quality.
The cold light of day may well reveal a growing injury list in the Maroon Platoon’s ranks, but they have vast resources to tap into in their hour of need. Throughout the campaign thus far, Jason Worral has been keeping the scoreboard operators busy from the tee and Ramone Samuels seems just as happy to score tries whether he is at hooker or on the flank.
Paarl Gim have posted 132 points in their last two outings, 75 of them two weeks back against Tygerberg, the balance against Bishops last Saturday. Simple and direct stuff: twenty tries – twelve by the backs – plus sixteen conversions. They couldn't be looking better no matter from what angle you look at them.
Blissfully injury-free and fine-tuned by master tactician Christoff Lötter, Gim are playing with a relentless menace born of confidence. Their pack boasts several stars in the making. Flank Rikus Bothma, prop Ollie Regue and locks JD Schickerling and Hennie Botha are all drawing rave notices. Their backs need no introduction either: half-backs Lotter Pretorius and Handré Pollard have made sure of that. Lead destroyers in the points' fest against Bishops were left-wing Loek van der Merwe and centre Wesley Cupido with three and two tries respectively.
The game will be broadcast on television, but nothing beats being right there to witness the drama first hand. This will be someone’s Waterloo, but whose?
The season so far
Paul Roos have drawn a match and lost three of their 10 matches. Two of those defeats were in recent times - at the hands of Grey PE and then last weekend, the shock of the weekend, to Tygerberg.
Paarl Gim have lost just once - to Affies.
Paarl Gim have had the big win of the season. They played mighty Grey College of Bloemfontein and beat them 45-29. That shook the nation.
The two schools have, up till now, just two opponents in common - Grey Bloem and Tygerberg. Gimmies beat both of them while Paul Roos lost to both of them. Gimmies beat Tygerberg a whopping 75-3, which is almost as big an aberration as Tygerberg's victory over Paul Roos.
Of other schools in the Top 20, Paul Roos have beaten Westville, Kearsney, Queen's, Boland Landbou and Maritzburg College and have drawn 27-all with Dale.
Apart from Grey Bloem, Gimmies have beaten Waterkloof (38-11) and Glenwood (35-25).
It seems that Paul Roos's quantity is better while Gimmies' quality is better, and Gimmies are at home - not that it is a massive trek from lovely Stellenbosch to lovely Paarl.
The teams will enjoy having the most capped referee in the history of the game to referee this match. Jonathan Kaplan loves refereeing schools matches and he does it brilliantly.
TV Broadcast
The match will be broadcast live under the Premier Interschools banner on channel SS5 at 12.00 on Saturday with repeats over the weekend on SS1.

Gimmies bo!
Premier win for Gimmies

Paarl Gim flyhalf Handre Pollard celebrates. (c) Gallo

It was a beautiful autumn day in the beautiful Boland town of Paarl amongst the mountains on Saturday when Paul Roos took the short journey from Stellenbosch to play Paarl Gim, two of the very best schoolboy teams in South Africa in action and shown to the nation on television in the new Premier Interschools initiative under the direction of the former Springbok captain, Tiaan Strauss.
Expectations were that it would be a great match, which it was. Expectations were that it would be a close encounter, which it was not as Gimmies won 28-8, four tries to one.
On the field things were more even than the score suggests as Paul Roos managed to dominate possession in the first half, but even then it was clear that Gimmies were better at the scrums, that the Paul Roos line-out was iffy and that Gimmies owned the loose. They certainly made better use of opportunities.
The match was strange. Paul Roos had the better of the first half in many ways and Gimmies led 21-3. Gimmies had much the better of the second half and won it just 7-5. What helped the home side in the first half was the unexpected. Under pressure they won vital ball and used it with zest.
Both sides ran with the ball. It was so pleasing to see that there is an alternative way of playing rugby to thump and bang. Here we had passing, man trying to beat man, eager use of advantage. And both sides ran from the start.
Both sides were served by excellent scrumhalves - Lotter Pretorius of Gim and SP Ferreira of Paul Roos, the grandson of SP from Patensie, one of the great characters of South African rugby, and the son of Freddie, also called Boetie Bain, for years an outstanding scrumhalf for Western Province.
The first impressive break was by Callie Nel, the slender Paul Roos flyhalf, the second by SP Ferreira. They could both had led to tries but Paul Roos's hands were jittery.
Paul Roos lost one of their own scrums and Lotter Pretorius went on a brilliant run down the right. Back Gimmies came to the left getting closer and closer till Altus Momsen cut back straight off Handré Pollard and swept over for a try at the posts. 7-0 after 20 minutes.
Jason Worral, the Paul Roos fullback, had an excellent run on counterattack, not for the only time in the match. But again it was Gim who scored. Lock Hennie Botha made good ground and gave to flank Jacques Vermeulen who looked certain to score but was knocked down just short of the line. Gim kept it going and Pretorius scored. 14-0 after 30 minutes.
Jason Worrall goaled a penalty and Gim kicked off. Jacques Vermeulen ran up, caught the ball on the full and ran straight through for a try that looked ridiculous in its simplicity. 21-3 after 31 minutes.
Gim nearly scored again but they lost the ball at the line.
Ramone Samuels scored the first points of the second half. Gim rolled a pass out to their right and just inside his 10-metre line the burly flank picked up the ball and, helped by two strong hand-offs, scored 62 metres downfield. 21-8 after 46 minutes.
Gim mauled a line-out but lost the ball at the line. They counterattacked with both wings in evidence on the right but Wion Robertse was stopped on the line. Gim stayed close. They tapped a kickable penalty and were close. They had a five-metre scrum and Handré Pollard stepped and burst through three tacklers to score.
It was an excellent day with a big crowd packed into the famous field and boys singing from the stands. Premier Interschools was off to a brilliant start.

Some good advise from Wynberg Boys High principal.

Keith Richardson.
A principal's sporting ideals

Thu, 17 May 2012 10:54

In the midst of so much unpleasantness on and next to rugby fields where schoolboys are playing, it is worth reading a letter sent to his school's community by Keith Richardson, the headmaster of Wynberg Boys' High.
Of all Mankind’s great inventions, few have succeeded in capturing the imagination more that sport. Soon we are about to witness the greatest sporting pageant of all, the spectacular Summer Olympic games. Sport has a fascination for all of us. It has the power to inspire, to enthuse, to entertain.
It is ironic on the eve of the greatest sporting show on earth, that the local newspapers have been filled with the shenanigans on school rugby fields. Referees have been denigrated, player behaviour condemned and parental and coach over-reaction censured. The notion that ‘sport’ is a pleasurable pastime has been sidelined. The camaraderie, the fellowship of sport, triumph over adversity, the lessons of defeat, the hard work in accomplishing victory have been forgotten in the heat of recrimination.
Somehow in it all, we have forgotten that in the hierarchy of values of a school, sportsmanship must be ranked only marginally below scholarship. Adults, including coaches, parents and referees, should be unified in ensuring the time-honoured ethics of sport are maintained on our school sports fields – to play hard, but fairly; to accept defeat and smile when shaking the hand of an opponent; to be competitive but at the same time co-operative because, without your opponent, there is no game.
A few years back, a local journalist, disillusioned after a disappointing Stormers game wrote that from now on he would be only watching school rugby. ‘It has a youthful innocence,“ he said, “unsullied by cups, leagues and points.”
And he is correct. Schoolboy rugby teams tend to play with enthusiasm and passion and, when well-coached, with an absence of fear. Coaches of schoolboy rugby sides who release their players from negative and safety first tactics soon find their players revelling in the positive enjoyment of displaying their talent.
It is these coaches who have realised the true reason why we play sport at school. It is not played for the benefit or the glory of the school or the egos of the coaches, or the ambitions of the parents – it is played for the benefit of the players.
Whatever the level of the schoolboy player, we want him to learn the lessons of sport – because they are lessons of life. In the end, these lessons will develop confidence and self esteem in the player and he will learn, as a young sportsman, that bitterness and sweetness are opposite sides of the same coin.
As he advances through high school, the young sportsman soon realizes that the natural ability which carried him through Junior School is no longer enough. As the competition becomes keener, those players start coming to the fore who were lucky enough to learn the lessons early in their school lives that only commitment to hard work and the ability to fight back from disappointments, are the foundations for a successful sporting life.
Sometimes these lessons are learnt more effectively after losing a match or being dropped to a C or D team. Schoolboys do not easily learn messages from winning because they fail to examine their performance as they bask in the congratulatory glow of parents and friends.
On the other hand, losing really does say something about a young sportsman. His reaction to a loss is important. Does he blame others? Does he complain about bad luck? Does he analyze his failure? Does it increase his determination?
In the book, ‘The Hansie Cronje Story’ by Garth King, the author remarks that Hansie never lost a rugby game in his career at Grey College. One can only wonder what lessons Hansie missed because of that.
The role of parents in the development of any sportsman is vital. In my career as a sports coach and schoolmaster, I have seldom come across a truly successful schoolboy sportsman who was not well parented. Parental support, as opposed to parental pressure, invariably determines whether a young player will learn the proper lessons. Some time ago, I sent the following advice to parents:
• Support your son and attend the matches, whatever side he is in.
• Always be there for him, especially in the ‘down times’.
• By all means set the bar for him – but always praise his achievements especially when he has tried hard to reach this bar.
• Praise effort and commitment – much more than results.
• Never criticise the Coach as it will confuse the players. It not only divides loyalty, but offers and excuse. Don’t fall for the common South African sporting curse of blaming the coach or referee.
• Never over-emphasize winning as it will only lead to a fear of failure. One of the curses of schoolboy sport is an unbeaten season.
• Do not relive your own sporting career (or lack of it!) through your son. This leads to frustration and disappointment on both sides.
• Be a true sporting spectator. Let the referee handle the game and let your son make his own mistakes. He will learn more that way.
All parents want what is best for their sons – but then so does every coach and every school. If we expect our players to behave like sportsman on the field, then it is important for adults not to behave like children on the sidelines.
Some years ago in America, the authorities imposed a noise ban on parents and coaches in the Northern Ohio Girls Soccer league. Spectators were instructed to keep their cheers and criticism to themselves.
Some parents waved signs; others put duct tape over their mouths to stay quiet. Goals and saves were met by smiles and nods of approval from parents and coaches. This was an effort to put sport back into perspective after rowdy parents disrupted games and frustrated players. Presumably the point was made – but it was not reported whether these measures had a lasting impact!
There is no doubt that sport can play a pivotal role in education and it is our job as parents and teachers to help our children cope with the pressures of today’s highly competitive world.
As we marvel at the proficiency and expertise of the athletes at the upcoming Olympics, let us at the same time applaud the commitment which saw them reach the pinnacle of sporting success. Yet, somewhere in their past, I hope they too, had a coach like I had, who once said to me: “The next sixty minutes you are about to play will never be repeated. Make the most of every minute.”

SA Schoolboy team will play against France/Wales and England. Team has been announced

Schoeman leads SA Schools
Blue Bulls prop Pierre Schoeman will captain the South African Schools team in three internationals next month.

SARU on Saturday announced the SA Schools squad of 28, after a set of trial matches at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.

The squad was selected from an initial group of 50 players chosen after the recent Under-18 Craven Week in Port Elizabeth.

The SA Schools team will play in three internationals against European opposition in August - when they face the Under-18 teams of England, Wales and France.

The powerful Blue Bulls prop, Schoeman, who was chosen for SA Schools last year, is the captain and SA Under-20 flyhalf Handré Pollard the vice-captain.

Remarkably there is nobody from Grey College of Bloemfontein in the team.

There are four players from Affies, three from Kearney, two each from Waterkloof, Centurion, Outeniqua and Paarl Gim and one each from Maritzburg College, Ben Vorster Grey of PE, Dale, Daniël Pienaar, Overberg, Hugenote, Drostdy, KES and Paul Roos.

SA Schools international fixtures:
10 August: SA Schools vs France in Wellington
14 August: SA Schools vs Wales in George
18 August: SA Schools vs England

The big Interschools

It is hard to imagine a more passionate schoolboy rugby encounter anywhere in the world
quote-end-eb0bec916c3869da0b9afab493efc057.png

It's the first Saturday in August and so it is the Interschools. This is the big one, what you mean when you say Interschools - Paarl Boys' High vs Paarl Gimnasium, Boishaai vs Gimmies, Galpil vs Bloedwors.

It is hard to imagine a more passionate schoolboy rugby encounter anywhere in the world. The divide between the two schools in a pleasant Boland down is a huge chasm. Paarl is split wide apart, and everything is separate, pre-parties and postparties, ground accommodation, colour. It's green for Gim, blue for Boys' High - and don't make a mistake.

The only contact is on the field of play, and the field of play is not just a rugby field. There are other sports and activities.

There are Old Boys' Reunions, the Great Brag that builds up 'gees' for the occasion and the traditional ceremony in which fathers cap their sons. There are singsongs, Old Boys' matches, Golden Oldies matches, the primary schools are involved as well as La Rochelle for the girls' activities. There is golf, hockey, chess and netball.
It completely absorbs both schools for the whole of the week.

There will be a huge crowd - 20 000 or more - at the stadium in Faure Street. People will come from far and wide and the interest in the match will stretch far beyond the borders of South Africa. And it will be televised.

It is not just about the rugby match, only mainly so. If you say Boishaai or Gimmies won Interschools, you mean that the first team won. If the first team wins, everybody wins.

It's a difficult game to predict. It always is but even more so this year when the teams are ranked 1 and 2 in the country with so little to separate them. At the moment Boys' High are ranked No.1 on the FNB Top 20 with Paarl Gim ranked No.2 after being No.1 for most of the season.

This century Gimmies have had the better, winning eight of 11, Boishaai two with a draw. But all of that is irrelevant. We can look at other bits of history and personality but in the end it all comes down to 70 minutes on match day.

Results against Common Opponents

Affies: Boishaai lost 22-14, Gimmies 27-20
Bishops: Boishaai won 80-5, Gimmies 57-3
Boland Landbou: Boishaai won 20-10, Gimmies 38-13
Grey Bloem: Boishaai won 28-18, Gimmies 45-29
Oakdale: Boishaai won 22-7, Gimmies 25-15
Outeniqua: Boishaai won 33-26; Gimmies drew 17-17
Paul Roos: Boishaai 22-17, Gimmies 28-8
Rondebosch: Boishaai won 24-3, Gimmies 38-8
SACS: Boishaai won 19-10, Gimmies 28-13
Waterkloof: Boishaai won 19-18, Gimmies 38-11
Wynberg: Boishaai won 12-6, Gimmies, 14-10

There is not much to choose.

Representative Players

Gimmies have the most talked-about player in the Western Province - Handré Pollard. He was a star for the victorious SA Under-20 side at the IRB's Junior World Championship but then he had a terrible opening match at Craven Week when was injured and in fact has not played since then, but he is a flyhalf with every skill a flyhalf should have, and he is back from injury and down to play.

Paarl Gim have two players in the SA Schools team to play three Tests later this month - Pollard and lock JD Schickerling.

The following went to Craven Week with the Western Province team:

Paarl Boys' High:
Pieter Schoonraad, Sebastian Ferreira, Liam Hendricks, Craig Corbett, Wesley Adonis, Burger van Niekerk. And Jean-Luc du Plessis went to Craven Week in Pollard's place when Pollard was injured.

Paarl Gim: Wesley Cupido, Grant Hermanus, Handré Pollard (captain), Rikus Bothma, Jacques Vermeulen, JD Schickerling, Craig Cooper.

In addition, the following went to the Academy Week:

Paarl Boys' High: Michael van Tonder, who is not in Saturday's team, Jean-Luc du Plessis, Dewald Naudé

Paarl Gim: Lotter Pretorius, Ollie Regue, Hennie Botha

That means that 19 players from the two schools represented Western Province in the recent holidays.

Prediction: That would be silly. It would be silly in years when a winner seems obvious and far too silly in this close year for a prediction. The conflict bteween the two outstanding packs of rugged schoolboys could be decisive.

Interschools: It's points that count

Sat, 04 Aug 2012 23:02
It was a match played with complete commitment with an intensity to match any level of rugby football

In Paarl on Saturday afternoon the Faure Street Stadium was packed with a tense and enthusiastic crowd for the Interschools which Paarl Gim won 16-9, a converted try the difference.

Gimmies led 13-3 at the break and the second half belonged almost entirely to Paarl Boys' High but in the end, trite as it may sound, territory and opportunities without points do not win matches. Points do.

In that second half Boishaai missed two kicks at goal and somehow managed not to score a try - the opportunity to score 13 points not taken.

It was a match played with complete commitment with an intensity to match any level of rugby football. The tackling was committed and determined, the collisions places of utter commitment. Nothing more could have been asked of the players on both sides, the culmination of a season's planning and a week of functions. It all reached its climax when the first teams ran out from decorated stands onto the field to the beat of drums, the release of balloons and a flypast of five airplanes with their colourful vapour trails. And throughout there was noise of various kinds.

Jean-Luc du Plessis of Boishaai kicked off to start this absorbing game, and 70 minutes simply flew past.

Boishaai scrummed a bit better than Gimmies did; Gimmies' line-outs were better. The penalty counts were about even. Both sides mauled to great effect - long, fast mauls that ate up territory and produced some penalties.

Boishaai scored first when right wing Tiaan Mouton goaled a penalty for offside and a second for an infringement at a long maul. 6-0 after 14 minutes. At this stage, unlike what happened in the second half, Gimmies had the territory, Boishaai the points.

A long maul of some 50 metres set Gimmies attacking., Three times the referee allowed a penalty advantage and then penalised for the fourth infringement. Handré Pollard goaled. 6-3 after 19 minutes.

After winning the ball with an intercept, Gimmies attacked through phases. Boishaai won a turnover but lost the ball for a scrum to Gimmies near the Boishaai line. Pollard was close and then big, powerful Rikus Bothma, the best ball-carrier in the match, forced his way through the Boishaai centres to score under the posts. 10-6 to Gimmies after 26 minutes.

Boishaai had a chance to score when they attacked after a maul and line-out. Nippy Du Plessis was close but a low pass produced a knock-on.

Then Gimmies attacked down the other end with good work by Bothma, Lotter Pretorius and Stephan Morkel but a knock-on ended a promising attack. Just before half-time Pollard goaled his second penalty. 13-6, the half-time score.

Mouton goaled a penalty early in the second half and Boishaai attacked again and again. They had a five-metre scrum and got right to the Gimmies line only to be penalised in the tackle.

Gimmies got away from their line and fullback Dawie Dyason was tackled high. The mark for the penalty was a lone way out and 15 metres in from touch but Pollard goaled. 16-9 after 56 minutes.

In the next 14 minutes, Boishaai attacked, Gimmies tackled and no points were scored.

After several attacking phases Dewald Naudé was over in the right corner but instead of dotting down he kept running and Grant Hermanus, across from the right wing, knocked him into touch-in-goal.

Boishaai had a five-metre line-out but over threw it and Gimmies came away.

They tapped a penalty from five metres out and Mouton was close but the Gimmies defence was intense, driving attackers back. again and again.

Time was up when Gimmies threw into a line-out but Boishaai won it. Gimmies won a turnover and Pretorius hoofed the ball into the stand. Green-blazered Gimmies flooded onto the field in glee to be with their conquering heroes.

Andretjie is a disabled person but most defnitely the biggest Paarl Gym supporter you'll get. He obvious dont work but you'll see him every single day on Paarl Gyms sports grounds. He dont miss a single match of whatever sport played here. He will pick up every single paper or tin after the days play on the sport grounds. Being such a loyal Paarl Gym supporter our previous head master Basjan Reinhardt (Wilde Klawer top 14 is his brain child) have donate him that green jacket with that golden Paarl Gym 150 years tie in front of the whole school in an official ceremony. On saturday I took Abdretjie to the schools Rango Restuarant and bought him a chicken mayo roll with a Pepsi to make sure he will be on his best during the main match. Cheers to Andre!

How do top players suddenly end up at some of these top schools even though they live 1000's of km away and their school fees are sponsored by a "old boy"?
