How do top players suddenly end up at some of these top schools even though they live 1000's of km away and their school fees are sponsored by a "old boy"?
Most schools in our country sides is a farce compare to a few years back, apart from that I think you answered your own question. Its a no question really, its any parent or school kid own decition where they want to go be it in SA, Australia or NZ.

Fair enough. I have personal experiences with it when I was in school and some mates of mine were approached. But I must say with the private schools you do not see that so much if not at all. That is why the headmaster could write such a letter.

Problem WP or any other province have in today's world is not having a university as its development tree. That is why the Bulls can approach kids in matric or under the age of 18 which is totally legal by using Tuks as the loophole. Young Pollard is such a example.

Boet you forgot about Maties and Ikeys. UWC also being used for rugby. I know Pollard very well, grew up with his dad and living a block from Paarl Gim. The Brutes are very aggresive when they target these youngsters and they will offer grade 11 kids R200,000 p.a. to get them on their books. Paarl Gym sitting with some excellent stock and Rikus Bothma have now been approached by the Sharks after the Easter weekend. Myself think WP has been spoiled for talent at schoolboy level and is sleeping when it come to contract these youngsters. Pollard was a signed deal for the Brutes longer then a year before WP gotb out of their spoiled sleep. These afrikaans speaking schoolboy lot from Paarl Gym seem to adabt very easily at Bloem or Pretoria. The WP Boland schools have produce now a number of players who have been ignored by WP and had to go the Boland route to the Cheetahs and Griquas for bigger contracts. WP is spoiled to rotten.

So what's the structure of Schoolboy rugby in SA? Is there a national comp? And how will they pick the SA schoolboys to come to AUS this year?

Great question, I'd also like to know how many of the 7's players I watched play in the Youth Olympics, in Sydney in January, are also likely to make the SA schoolboys?

Its not top SA schools. Strand and Settlers is medium to small in SA Schoolboy rugby terms. I'll keep you up to date with the scores.

Know Oosthuizen well from Paarl Gym. He have a good change to make at least WP Craven Week. Craven Week is our schoolboys provincial competition and the SA Schoolboy sides is mostly from the top players in the Craven and Academic (B teams and mostly u17 players) weeks. Nowadays Saru do have High Performance sqauds from u16 level and coached them from that level.

Thanks for that, if you need I should be able to get the dates to you.
Last year the hooker made senior rep level and this season some of the backs look like strong contenders for the same.

The two top ranked schools in SA, Outeniqua (1) played Paarl Gim (2) last weekend in George. The match was also live on TV and a few of the backline players were involved in the sevens, Oosthuizen for Gim and Warrick Gelant, Duhan van der Merwe, Dewald Human (Outeniqua). Paarl Gym beat them 37-25 and look like they all have a good chance of making SA Schools. Paarl Gym actually have a few candidates for SA Schools this year.

JD Schickerling (Paarl Gim)
The giant lock stands at 2.03m and is more than a head taller than many of the second rowers who have the misfortune of jumping against him in the line-out. Schickerling’s line-out work can be described as ‘my ball is my ball and your ball is also my ball’. While his height makes him stand out, pun intended, is rugby skills go far beyong simply being taller than most schoolboys. Schickerling has a high work-rate around the field and is mobile for a lock, much like Springbok legend Victor Matfield. There is little surprise that he has already been involved in the SA Schools setup, and has a bright future ahead of him.

Rikus Bothma (Paarl Gyms captain and nr8)

paarlgym2012-630x400.jpg

Played WP Craven Week last year and have already played himself a Sharks Academy bursary.
DURBAN, KZN (01/04/13 - A highly successful sixth Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival wrapped up today with the announcement of four players who each received scholarships to The Sharks Academy for 2014.

Valued at R100 000 each, the recipients are Paarl Gimnasium captain and number 8 Rikus Botha, Glenwood flank Mzwandile Mazibuko, Boland Landbou lock Sarel Roux and Kearsney College captain and scrumhalf Matt Reece-Edwards.

In making the awards, Hans Scriba, director of the Academy, said there was a big group of outstanding players at this year’s festival, which had led to the awarding of an additional scholarship. Prior to the event, the Academy had announced it would give three awards.

“The broader quality of players this year has been exceptionally impressive. A large number of boys who have played here this weekend will be playing professional rugby in three years’ time,” Scriba said.
He sure is in the Vermeulen type of 8.

WP do not have a Academy at any university where they dump half theory professional player, Maties use students which do not have professional contracts. They are students that actually go to uni. When they do get a contract the next student move in his place. The Bulls actually poach them from other provinces then dump them at Tuks. You can see they totally made the Varsity cup a tournament that have no purpose anymore as they stuffed Tuks full of professionals to take on amateurs. Sadly they've become so obsessed with winning they will do anything. Even if they have to spoil SA rugby they will do it as they are currently doing.

I think you got stuck between all the Academies and Institutes at Stellenbosch. Brutes have an agrressive scouting process going. WP need to catch up, we have been spoiled with talent over the years. Mallet told me that you wont find anywhere in the world the amount of rugby talent coming through from the Stellenbosch and Paarl area. Brutes now get stuck in this pool and scout professional.

There is a difference than putting them in a academy and offring them proffesional contracts. WP do not go to other unions and approach them as a UNI and throw in a Blue Bulls contract in the process. Name me one player in the current Matie team that is not a full time student. Then go look at the Tuks squad. As soon as the one guy gets a contract he moves out the next student comes in. Bulls take their professionals in put them in Tuks to beat up amateurs. Making the competitions basically useless for its intended purposes.

6. Is it part of Western Province Rugby?
Yes. The Institute is the official rugby academy for the training of junior players in Western Province. All players who are not studying at a tertiary institution must be at the Institute. At the end of the year the contracting committee of Western Province will then contract players for the union. The coaching plays and systems are handed down from the senior coach to ensure consistency and it is therefore the same as that of the senior sides (Stormers and Currie Cup).
