So the team remains unchanged for Brisbane on Thursday.

Looking forward to our boys sticking it to Micky Arthur and getting some revenge for the punishment we received in the UAE.

Expecting nothing less than a clean sweep.

Strong end to day 1 @ 3/288.

Smith and Handscomb unbeaten on 110 & 64 respectively

Strong innings from Matt Renshaw

Khawaja will be disappointed.

I hope Mickey Arthur has changed his disciplinary methods from suspension for not doing homework to the rod

3/288, Smithy with his 16th Century, Renshaw with his first 50 (at reasonable pace too mind) and Petey in a good position for his maiden hundred tomorrow.

Good days play.

Really solid display from the boys today and the freak that is our Skipper clocking up another ton. Over the last three calendar years his batting has just been astonishing, averaging around 75 with 14 hundreds. That's elite level right there. Really pleased to see the two young guns get amongst today too.

How good was that last 10 overs with the new ball hooping around under lights and 80% humidity. Really adds a new dimension to test cricket.

Smith must have been tired, and then the hardest conditions of the day happens instantly with the change of ball. Had a bit of luck but top effort by him and handsome to get through. Should set up the win from there.

Was surprised how good the ball was at over 79. Still very pink and visible with a nice prominent seam. The Red Ball doesn't last like that.

I hadn't been convinced by the D/N tests but it's been very good, especially now that the ball is holding up. Unfortunately it might be a while before the tradionalists in the boring southern capitals allow there hallowed Boxing Day and New Years tests to be sullied.

I went to two days of the Adelaide test which was my first experience of a day night test. It was fantastic.

I'd describe myself as a cricket traditionalist as I'm far more interested in test cricket than the shorter formats and that is the overwhelming majority of the cricket I attend. I didn't feel like day/night test cricket detracted from it being test cricket in any way, shape or form. If anything, it potentially moves the session where overhead conditions and moisture on the pitch are likely to have the biggest impact from the first session of each day to the last.

I don't think the Boxing Day Test ever needs to move to a D/N test due to the time of year it is on. Plus I don't want to contemplate having to wait until after lunch for the cricket to start between Christmas and New Year.

There's a reasonable argument to try it in Sydney as people go back to work particularly at the back end of the test and it would be good for people coming down after a half day at work to still see an entire day of the test match.

The other thing to consider is the Big Bash which would start having conflicts with those tests if they became D/N matches.

What's the point though, given it's an entirely commercial decision?

Boxing Day and New years tests generally don't have audience problems, either in attendance or viewing figures. And Perth won't get a day night test match anytime soon, again, because commercially it's already a D/N game for the Eastern States Broadcast.

Course that's not to say I wouldn't enjoy going to one.

Yep, Brisbane and Adelaide are the obvious candidates from here on in, though it will be interesting to see what happens if storms blow through in Brissie one year for 5 days and knock out half the test.

The mid-December timing makes it a lot easier to get a decent crowd at the Gabba as well.

Looking at the weather forecast looks like we might get lucky this year.

Whenever the new ball coincides with the evening session it's going to make life very difficult for the batsemen

Good:

49 run last wicket partnership
Petey's Century

Bad:

Smithy seemed to lose his head and got out twice
Wade fails again
Lower order slashing

Ugly
Maddinson proving why he shouldn't have been anywhere near the side.

Well, they made stumps. The keeper managed to put in a bit of resistance and Wade helped him with a shocking stumping miss. Not had a good day has Wade.

Poor batting from Pakistan. Kept giving catching practice to the slips slashing outside off to balls they didn't need to play. Full credit to Hazlewood and Bird who were irresistible

edit - just saw the aussie dismissals I missed this morning. Just as bad as the Pakistani ones!

Two great days of cricket from Australia. So good to see youngsters like Renshaw and Handscomb succeeding. The selectors have pretty much got things right and I hope we never see any of the old guard back again (Voges, SMarsh et al).

Maddinson on shaky ground though and I still think that Nevill was unlucky to be dropped.

Really good 50 from Sarfraz, some of the specialist batsmen should take note e.g. Younis who has now made 16 in his last six innings, 11 of them in the second inns at HamNZ.

Rahat run out by the proverbial bee's dick, Pakistan all out 142 (Sarfraz 59*) & looks like Smith isn't going to enforce the follow-on.

Andrew Slack (58)
Bout 40 runs too many for the follow on.

EDIT: Looks like it might be mistake so far. Been more than enough in the pitch to worry Ussie and Renshaw, plus Warner puts no value on his wicket again. 2 down very fast.

Probably hasn't been hot enough today (a mere 30ish) for an evening storm but looking at the radar I wouldn't be surprised if we get the odd shower before stumps. Meant to be mid-30's tomorrow (yay!) so possibility of a storm comes into play.

Not hot, but still oppressively humid. Hotter tomorrow and still 80% humidity. If it can go 5 days in December without an afternoon storm in Brisbane, it would be unheard of.
