A win over Wales would have pushed our ranking from 8th to 6th. A bonus point win over Wales would have pushed us to 5th.

I don't know what else that were doing. But disagree.

I think the biggest problem is not fielding the best possible side and lack of preparation.

This years squad looks very strong, and if all the Super players are released they will have a real chance.

For what it's worth. Game 1 last year was an undetstrength team vs Wales. (some poor selections with available squad and no Super players) We lost a game we should have won.

Had we won that game we would have made 4th place and been in the playoffs.

Recent history of Australian teams in this tournament suggests that there are systemic issues involving one or more of; poor selections, poor coaching and poor youth development/coach development structures.

We came 3rd in 2011 and since then we've come 8th, 7th, 5th, 5th, 6th, 6th and 5th.

The tournament has been dominated by England, South Africa and New Zealand who between them have won every tournament except 2018 since the event's inception in 2008 (France won in 2018).

Taking in a step further, out of the 11 tournaments held England have won it 3 times and finished 2nd on 6 occasions, New Zealand have won it 6 times and finished 2nd and 3rd once each and South Africa have won it once, finished 2nd once and finished 3rd 7 times.

Australia and Wales have similar records; mostly mid field with a couple of placings. Ireland and Scotland a little worse again.

A lot of it relates to depth in my opinion. We don't have nearly the depth of New Zealand, England or South Africa.

Obviously the Wallabies results have been poor for the last few years but historically the Wallabies have been a top team but beyond our top players things fall away quickly.

In the under 20s this is exacerbated. In any given year we probably only have a couple of world class players unless we get lucky with a very talented year where we have an unusually high number of players who will go on to be Wallaby stars all in the same year.

Clearly we have to do things to try and improve that. I think there is room to improve in every category you've mentioned but the simple fact will be that we will always select a bunch of guys who don't really have much hope of maintaining a professional rugby career because they aren't good enough.

Junior Wallabies Head Coach Jason Gilmore has further refined the Junior Wallabies squad, as the team begin to finalise their preparation ahead of the Oceania U20s Championship in April.

The week-long camp will run from this Sunday at the Australian Institute of Sport and Brumbies HQ.
The training squad for the second camp is bolstered by the inclusion of Trevor Hosea, Esei Ha’angana, who will link up with the squad following their Super Rugby commitments.
Junior Wallabies Head Coach, Jason Gilmore said: “It's exciting to get the group together again. We’re getting closer to the Oceania U20 Championship and every opportunity we have together as a group is important.

"The staff including National High Performance Coach Advisor Stephen Larkham are looking forward to working with our playing group.

“Camp two will see a combination of units and team work across the week. The group is looking to build on camp one performances along with their performances in their respective clubs.

“We had our draw for the World Championship released the other day, and we’ll have some fierce opposition from sides that will be coming off their own Six Nations campaigns, so the hard work continues for our squad,” Gilmore said.

Josh Nasser, the son of 1991 Rugby World Cup winner Brendan Nasser is in the squad alongside Australian Men’s Sevens speedster Triston Reilly.

How many of those lads played at least Premier Grade last year?

Harry Wilson, Michael Wood and Josh Nasser all did (and played NRC last year, the open variety).

I think Jack Hardy did in Perth (and regardless has now played Super Rugby) and I think Will Deardon playd some prem grade in Perth too.

Deardon is definitely first grade quality now but did play first grade in Perth first year out. Cotton has been playing 1st grade off the bench for two years and is a starter now. Same with Isaac Henry.

Hosea played NRC for Melbourne, may have played Soup
Haangana might be in his 3rd season playing soup for Rebels.
Tafa contracted to Tahs
McReight to Reds (think he has come on off the bench this year)
Lawson played URC, not sure if he played any grade for club

So, if we believe those who have played senior rugby are at an advantage, then a possible team of:

15 Noah Lolesio
14 Sione Tui
13 Jack Hardy
12 Isaac Henry
11 ??
10 Will Harrison
9 Will Goddard?
8 Pat Tafa
7 Fraser McReight
6 Harry Wilson
5 Trevor Hosea
4 Esei Ha'angana
3 Josh Nasser
2 ??
