Moorabbin v Endeavour Hills
Harlequins v Sth Districts
Box Hill v Power House
Footscray v Melbourne
Melbourne Uni v Bye

Two big games in terms of the finals spots this weekend. Moorabbin v Hills will be massive for both clubs with only 3 points separating them.
Power House v Box Hill will be big as well. Last time out it wasn't as one sided as the games last year and House are on the improve, if they can topple Box Hill then it closes the gap they have got to 4th spot a bit and might open up the race for both 3rd and 4th.

Melbourne and Quins should get the wins you would imagine.

The second half of the Dewar Shield competition is underway and this Saturday’s rematch between Endeavour Hills and Moorabbin at Keys Road Reserve shapes to be a crucial match for both teams.

The winner is likely to control their own destiny in securing the last finals spot behind competition leaders Harlequins, Melbourne and Box Hill.

Endeavour Hills took out the last meeting 24-22 at Frog Hollow Reserve and coach Paul Maihi said he expects Moorabbin will be looking to hit back at their home ground.

“Pound for pound it’s going to be a very close one.

“We beat Moorabbin at our home ground by a smidgen so they’ll be fired up and emotional for revenge. We know we’re going to have an extremely physical game.

“We’re two teams that play similar rugby. We play hard up front in the forward pack to set up platforms and give our backs opportunities to open up."

Maihi said Moorabbin’s off-season changes are starting to gel at the right time for the Rams.

“They’re starting to get into their stride. They’re slowly but surely blending together well now and I think we’ve got them at their mid-competition peak.”

Moorabbin coach Justin Carroll is under no illusions about how important Saturday’s game is for his team.

“We know this is four points we just have to get, being at home.

“We’re getting right into the meaty part of the season now and it’s the next three or four weeks that will determine what will happen.”

In addition to the competition points on the line, recent player movement between the clubs will add an extra dimension to the match, said Carroll.

“The teams know each other very well, there’s a lot of Endeavour guys at our place and a lot of our guys have gone to Endeavour over the years. So it is that south side rivalry.

“We’ve done our homework on what we think they’ll bring and hopefully we can counter it.”

House/Box Hill result has all but ended BH's chance of going top 2 this year. And now there's a few important weeks coming up for that middle bunch..

Some really big game coming up for those who want to make the 4. You would think that House, Moorabbin or Hills need to win at least 2, possibly 3 of their remaining 4 games. They all have the bye in there as well. It might come down to bonus points as well.
By my calculations the new table should look like this. Endeavour need to make up 5 points on Moorabbin and only 2 points on House.

Position Team P W L D B F A Diff % BP1 BP2 Points
1 Harlequin 12 12 0 0 1 564 158 406 356.96% 12 0 64
2 Melbourne 11 10 1 0 2 405 211 194 191.94% 10 0 58
3 Box Hill 11 7 4 0 2 361 210 151 171.90% 8 2 46
4 Moorabbin 11 6 5 1 1 305 335 -30 91.04% 6 1 37
5 Power House 12 5 5 2 1 256 324 -68 79.01% 5 1 34
6 Endeavour Hills 12 5 6 1 1 293 339 -46 86.43% 6 0 32
7 Footscray 11 3 8 0 2 232 342 -110 67.84% 3 3 26
8 Melbourne Uni 11 2 9 0 2 200 423 -223 47.28% 3 0 19
9 Southern Districts 12 0 12 0 1 195 467 -272 41.76% 4 1 9

Run home for Moorabbin, House and Hills
Moorabbin Power House Endeavour Hills
Round 14 Melbourne (Away) Endeavour Hills (Home) Power House (Away)

Round 16 Footscray (Home) Bye Southern (Away)

The three team race for the fourth finals sport in the Dewar Shield competition is heating up.

With five rounds to play, just four points separate Moorabbin, Endeavour Hills and Power House. This weekend’s game between Endeavour Hills and Power House may go a long way in determining the front runner for the last finals spot.

With just one team that sits ahead of them on the table left to play, a Power House victory this weekend could put them in the box seat and in control of their own destiny.

Power House head coach Glen Fowels said both teams will be motivated and neither can afford to lose.

“Absolutely we're motivated. Our finals season is probably on the line now.

“They're in a position where they've got to do exactly the same as we do, so we're expecting a really tough game. They can't afford any more hiccups either.”

Power House will need to continue their strategy of matching the physicality of their opponents in order to find success at the weekend, said Fowels.

“We've got to stay physical against these bigger teams and generally try and wait them out. We expect that Endeavour Hills will be a bigger forward pack than us and we'll just have to try and be as physical as we can with them and bring it home near the end."

Endeavour Hills coach Paul Maihi said the team’s recent results have put them in a tough position as they try and claim a finals spot.

“We know where we're at, we've dropped two games we shouldn't have and only made it harder for ourselves.

"We went from a great chance against Moorabbin, a fair chance against Footscray and now we've got but a mere sniff left at it. Losing against Power House this weekend, that's pretty much our season gone.”

The recent form of Power House has got Maihi’s attention and with a squad decimated by injuries he is playing down his team’s chances.

“I called Power House the dark horse from very early on in the season. All they needed to do really was follow the game plan set by their coach and it seems like that's what they've been doing.

“We're carrying around eight to ten injuries. We'll struggle, there's no two ways about that."

Even if Endeavour Hills’ finals chances do end on Saturday, Maihi said his team has come a long way this season.

"This season we've managed to win more games than the four seasons previously put together, but my disappointment as a coach is that we could have done a lot more."

"It should set us up on the right foot going into next season, even if our season ends on Saturday.”

All the attention is for that 4th spot at present - but the Top 2 has some interest in hosting the first week of the finals? BH are a given for 3rd, so they will host the knockout semi - but what of the other semi? QUINS have a far tougher run home than Melbourne with games against PH, BH and the Unicorns where the Unicorns only real threat would be the RAMS possibly this weekend, their QUINS game and the last game against EH who I think will be shot by then. Melb are behind big time on % to QUINS - but if they can role QUINS in Rd16 then they only need PH or BH to spring an upset late in the season or even deny QUINS a bonus point win and they could pinch #1 spot + Melb may have the luxury to rest some players late in the season where it doesn't look like QUINS will have such a luxury.

EH are done for finals. It is a now a race between Rams and House - I said a while a go that House had to get some bigger scalps and they have started to do that. Run Home:
House - Uni, BYE, Quins, Dogs
Rams - BYE, Dogs, Box Hill, Uni
Presuming Rams got 4 tries on Saturday - they are 1 point behind House but with a better F&A. So it might come down to bonus points and % at the end. Rd 17 might be judgement day when each team plays higher teams - Quins and BH, if a team can win that day OR even jag a bonus point or two then that might get them over the line.
Great to see the Pirate Ship not only get their first win in 1st Grade - but wins in all 3 Grades, big night a Seaford no doubt but a sorry day for the Students though, they have fallen a long way from the GF in 1st Grade last season.

You'd think so about EH, I was chatting about them the other day and whilst it would have been great to see them make it into the 4 it might be a year or two too soon for them. The success they have seen this year will hopefully get them set for next year to make a good push for finals again.

Going to be an interesting run home for House and Rams.

https://melbournerebels.com/2016/07/07/darren-obrien-reaches-referee-milestone/

Darren O’Brien of the Victorian Rugby Referees Association (VRRA) will reach a milestone this Saturday 9 July when he will referee his final game of Rugby in Victoria.
Darren commenced refereeing in Victoria in 1998 and has refereed over 130 Dewar Shield games and over 250 rugby games in total. His final game will be when Harlequin take on the Melbourne Unicorns at Harlequins Rugby Club, Power Avenue, Ashwood in a 3:10pm kick off.
Darren and his family are re-locating to Switzerland for professional purposes in mid-July 2016.
Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) President Tim North QC (Quade Cooper) said “Darren has been a wonderful servant to Rugby Union in Victoria over many years primarily as a Referee and in recent years as a VRU Board Director. We are very sad to see Darren and his family leave Victoria however the professional opportunity offered to Darren is a wonderful achievement and we thank him for his contribution and wish him well.”
VRU CEO Simon Davis stated “Over many years Darren has been considered one of Victoria’s top referees and is well-liked by players and fellow Match Officials. We are extremely grateful that Darren has gifted so many personal hours to help grow and develop Rugby Union in Victoria.”
Furthermore there are a couple of other notable referee milestones this Saturday 9 July:
Robert Edwards referees his 300th VRRA match and becomes only the 5th person to break this milestone.
Rob Osborn will also be refereeing his 150th VRRA match.

Our game cannot survive without this dedicated group and the VRU is extremely grateful to the volunteer Referees who donate a significant amount time each week for the benefit of players and supporters.
