so using the theory that Brumbies should make up the lionshare of our best team do we go with this for our first RC game and see what happens?

1) Slipper
2) Fainga'a
3) Ala'alatoa
4) Arnold
5) Rodda
6) Jones
7) Hooper
8) Samu/McCaffrey
9) Genia
10) Lealiifano
11) Speight
12) Kerevi
13) Kuridrani
14) Banks
15) DHP/Beale/Hodge

16) Mafi/Ulese/Rangi
17) Sio
18) Tupou
19) Coleman/Phillip
20) Samu/McCaffrey
21) Powell
22) Cooper/Foley
23) DHP/Beale/Hodge

Screw using Pocock till the WC

If you're using relative wins to arrive at a ratio then the Brumbies are massively over-represented there with 9 members of the starting 15.

Assuming the Brumbies and Rebels win their final round games, you'd have something like 8 Brumbies, 6 Rebels and 5/4 Waratahs/Reds respectively to make up a 23 based around wins.

I think the Rebels are very likely to be over-represented in any matchday 23. The Reds are likely to be under-represented. The Reds have two walk up starters (Rodda and Kerevi) and two potential bench players (Tupou and Salakaia-Loto). Mafi/BPA would be a longshot to make the bench hooker spot.

One would think quite a few rebels have played themselves out of contention the past few weeks. Some really soft powder puff rugby & shown to fold under pressure.

In the last few weeks only Koroibete, Naisarani and Philip have stood up. The rest have been average

The two I'd say are most in danger are Coleman and Cooper. Coleman could easily miss to Philip/Simmons and Cooper to Leali'ifano or no one (covered by To'omua/Beale/Hodge).

I personally think To'omua has been pretty average but his versatility probably gets him over the line.

Hodge is your utility back and Beale is your emergency 10. Ideally, CLL or Cooper is in the squad as well.

I wouldn't have To'omua in my squad at all.

In my eyes 7/8 of the pack picks itself.

1. Slipper / Sio (rotate them)
2. Fainga'a
3. Ala'alatoa
4. Arnold
5. Rodda
6. Jones
7. Hooper
8. Naisarani

For me, all of those players are well and truly ahead of their contenders, and the only question is at 6, and I would go for Jones as he's a great lineout operator and puts in a lot of work around the ground.

And then we can go for a high impact bench of:

16. Uelese (maybe, still questions on his form)
17. Sio / Slipper
18. Tupou
19. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto)
20. Pocock / Samu (depending on Pococks' fitness)

I also think that Philip is well and truly the third best performing lock in the country, but will miss out at the expense of Simmons and Coleman.

I think I would pick Foley and Lilo as my 10 options.

Hodge makes it for utility value although I'm not sure is currently in the best 23. To'omua probably does too.

If Kerevi goes down, who is your starting 12? I think I would prefer To'omua to Hodge.

Hunt if he makes it. A few months ago i would've said Meakes.

At least Meakes has shown some kind of form within the last two years. To'omua has been riding on his reputation for ages.

I'm not even convinced To'omua at 12 would be better than Beale back in at 12 and Banks or DHP at 15.

I don't think either of them will make the squad.

I’m by no means advocating for that team. Just a hypothetical using the premise that any position of contention goes to a Brumby because of their position on the ladder

I would be interested to see a back row of 6. Samu 7. Hooper 8. Naisirani

My fear would be it would be a bit Pooper Mark 2 but for me, whilst Samu is not as good a player as Pocock he is a line out option which makes 4 genuine targets. Overall it is a balanced back row and I think those 3 would be close to our most inform options which would be legitimate contenders (IMO).

Needs to be in the Wallaby squad. Can’t go past his talent even if he’s inexperienced and coming off an injury.

Well...yeah, you can, for exactly those reasons.

Kid's a freak, but you don't play injured/unfit players. Unless he's fit and firing, he unfortunately stays behind and stews about missing the WC, then turns up to pre-season breathing fire and determined not to miss out on the next WC.

BH,I don't think I've ever see that suggested as a basis for selecting players. In some nightmare where it was to be used, do you just pick the best number of players from each team and put them together regardless of whether there are better in other teams in certain positions? Do you just ignore combinations?

Quotas won't weork in test selections. The Brumbies have been the best performed team in Super Rugby Aussie style this year and have earned a larger number of selections than other teams. If that number happens to be 23 (of course not) then so be it. Or if it is more like 8 or 9 then that is how it is. Right now, I would be hard pressed to name more than one or two Rebels and two or three Tahs who would warrant a spot come TRC. Reds will have a few more.

Foley isn’t creative enough to have two boshers in the centres. If we go Kerevi/TK, Cooper or Lilo are 10.
If Foley is 10, he needs a second playmaker - Beale/LILO at 12.
I’d also be starting Hooper for sure - Pocock doesn’t have the running game to start games, he’ll be much more effective closing games out when oppositions are too slow to the breakdown to try and rip his head off. Use Hoopers speed and energy early, let The Cock destroy breakdowns late in the game and give us those psychological boosts with 10/15mins to go and under pressure.
Turnovers then are far more important.
Foley should be fine with Beale at 15 to work as a second playmaker.
I agree with Hooper though. His biggest strength is workrate. It doesn't make sense to bring him on for 30mins.
Poey can turn the game in that time...provided it's still in the balance.
Kerevi is our best 12, hands down. TK our best 13, hands down.
They start, simple.
Question is then, which 10 would suit that pairing the best?
Cooper, hands down. Lilo second, George Smith 3rd, Foley 4th.
Foley needs a second playmaker at 12, he's been too conditioned by Cheika to just shovel it on to Beale and let Beale try and set Folau up. Unless Beale plays 12, or Lilo plays 12, then Foley shouldn't start. If he's not starting, I don't see how on form he's in the matchday squad - Lilo covers 10/12 better than him and is in better form, is much better defensively, is the captain of the team that just shit all over the Tahs and has an equally good kicking % this year (not saying much because he's not been great).
9. Genia
11. Koirobete
10. Cooper
12. Kerevi
13. TK
I'd go Banks and Beale as 14/15 (they're interchangeable these days). DHP isn't better at anything than either of them, but he'd be next cab off the rank. Beale's defence is worse than Cooper and Foley's, but he at least can create tries as well as Cooper so his playmaking gets him in. Banks can't be left out, so that rounds out my starting backline.
14. Banks
15. Beale.
Tight five is locked in and only a f**king imbecile would select anything other than
1. Sio/Slipper (tag team them like they have all year)
2. Fainga'a/Uelese
3. AAA/Thor
4. Rodda
5. Arnold
Simmons is too liable to just randomly king-hit the referee because he had a brain fart, Coleman isn't in form and for some reason no one stills rates Carter, so LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) is my bench 2nd rower. He's not a backrower, he isn't dynamic enough and for once we actually have enough options there.
All those are for me, locked in unless something drastic happens.
Backrow is up in the air. I'd be going with
6. Jones
7. Hooper
8. Naisirani
19. LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) can at a pinch cover 6 if required but it's not ideal, so depending on the bench balance....(Plus, Jones could cover second row if there was an injury, so I think my tight five/bench tight five are sorted).
20. Pocock, obviously off the bench (there's nothing more psychologically crushing than trying to build momentum chasing a game only to turnover the ball and have it hoofed 50m back down into your own territory - that shit wins matches, and Hooper won't provide it off the bench - Pocock will). Plus he's easier to jerk off to in such moments - Hooper's eyes are just....off-putting.
5/3 bench - those are my options.
If it's 6/2, the McCaffrey gets included. He's a footballer, not a gym-star, and has been awesome this year. Closely shades Samu, Dempsey and Sir George Smith for the extra backrower position.
Hanigan has played better this year (and I was a fan early on), but he's still not having enough impact. I still rate Higginbotham, he's got everything required for a great blindside but I think has been let down by the balance of the backrow's he's played with in gold over the years. Clearly knows how to score a try, is one of the best lineout operators in the game, hits hard, is fast and rangy.....but....hmmm.
Backs bench options depends on the split, and is horses for courses.

TBF I think that post was a reply to a previous comment about who should have the most players etc and not necessarily his genuine opinion.

Decent team Brumbieman. I have two issues a) Uelese? i don't think he's shown enough to justify inclusion ahead of Mafi or Fitzpatrick (or Range or.......anyone) and b) what happens to the lineout if Rodda goes down? i like LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) as the second rower but only if we play a 6/2 with Simmons or someone else who can call on the bench.
