Div 3:

Iggies vs Brothers. Will depend how Brothers travel. Could be ugly if they don’t. Iggies by 10.
Saints vs Bobs. Saints to rally but Bobs class to show. Bobs by 10.
Redfield vs Valley. Could be ugly. Robs by 20+
Hac vs Newport. Newport to rally away but Hac by 15.

Goodluck to all.

Iggies vs Brothers - Expect some horrific cricket scores in the lower grades with scores into the 3 figures a definite possibility.
Iggies had a big win over Saints but Im hearing everyone will this year. Brothers got beaten by a pretty sharp BOBs outfit so this is definately the match of the round. I'm going to go with the upset and go with Brothers by 7.

Saints vs BOBs - Sadly this will be ugly across the grades for Saints. BOBs by 30+ in every grade with BOBs strong backline capable of a 50+ victory in 1s.

Redfield vs Hawkesbury Valley - Redfield look a well drilled club with plenty of depth and will be to fit, strong and thin for the big boppas of Hawkesbury Valley. Cannot see anything other than a 30+ scoreline.

HAC vs Newport Word has it that HAC would give Kentwell a shake and they will end the year undefeated premiers. A rebuilding Newport will be willing but can only see HAC by 30. Will be interesting to see how HAC lower grades go as after only winning 4 games of 50 games last season their 2nds and colts registered first up wins last week.

Lindfield vs St Patrick's - Interesting game this one, St Pats ran out of puff against Hills Last week and Lindfield beaten with the last play of the game. Pats with a big physical pack I think should win this one if they keep it tight against a young Lindfield side. Pats by 5
Beecroft vs Blue Mountains - Beecroft were by all reports impressive in their comeback last week but just feel short. This will be interesting with Mountains missing Fytogannis and Togo last week ( Is George playing this year and is Togo injured from pre season games?) anyway its a different looking Mountains side but if Kroll can rally his troops and he doesn't have to do all the work then think Mountains will be too strong despite Beecroft having a remembrance day for a fallen club member. Mountains by 12
Hills vs UNSW - Always a tough affair when these 2 play each other. Hills will be upbeat over knocking off St Pats last week while UNSW dug deep and knocked off Lindfield in the dying minutes. Ill go with Hills here being at Home and knocking off St Pats last week. Hills by 8
Forest vs Epping - Should be a cracker this, Stalwarts v the New Boys. Forest were very impressive last week, defensively and at Set Piece time to at one stage let Mountains 27-3. Epping played some enterprising rugby to have a lead much the same but doing enough to get the job done. Im going to go Epping here if they can match it set piece wise I think Epping should have too much for Forest Out wide. Epping by 5

Div 3

Iggies vs Brothers - Will be disgraceful scenes as noted in lower grades for Brothers, not sure how long they can keep this up when blokes have to play 2 sometimes 3 games a week and get belted as well. 1st Grade will be interesting im going to go with Iggies they are at home and look strong after their performance last week yes all be it against St Ives but none the less still had to play what was in front. Iggies by 15

Saints vs BOBs - Long long day ahead for Saints, can only see cricket scores being put on here. Bobs by plenty

Redfield vs Hawkesbury Valley - played each other in trials, Valley were destroyed by Redfield. It will be the same as mentioned above Big Boppas wont have enough to keep up with the young Redfield Side. Redfield by 30

HAC vs Newport- Said it before and ill continue to say it HAC are only a one team club, 5-6 former Shute Shield First graders playing for them in key positions will do that for you. their lower grades are getting tired of them having a full bench for ones and not filtering down below. They will win by plenty against Newport but cant say the same for their lower grade

How to destroy a club 101. Bring in 6 or 7 mercenaries and watch them show up at halftime in 2nd grade to warm up for 1st grade. As they warm up a thrashing of the club loyalists is occurring on the field as most are playing their 2nd game of the day so the club doesn’t have to forfeit. These ring ins are either oblivious to the situation or their handshake agreement doesn’t include playing the odd half game in 3s or 2s just to lighten the load on their club “mates”.

It really is a shame. I guess benefit of the doubt has to be given at this stage with 2s and colts winning.
Can see other teams invoking the old adage "Anybody but HAC" . On a brighter note, teams playing HAC will have nothing to loose!

Who are the players? I notice some islander names in the backline, are they ex Penrith guys?

A mate who watched Southern Districts play Penrith last week reckons it will be unsustainable for Penrith to field lower grades into the season and they will most likely disintegrate. So it would not be unreasonable to expect that as players head for the exit that both Blue mountains and HAC could pick up plenty of handy players as the weeks roll on.

This was the predictable result of making first grade the be-all-and-end-all of Subbies Rugby. A Club only needs a performing first grade to stay in the hunt for Club Championships. Over time this infects the rest of the club and you see what's happening at Brothers and HAC.

Fix the bloody points system. Far less points for a first grade win and all of a sudden it's the Club that's important, not the stars. You will then stop seeing regular cricket scores and lower grade players will stay in the game because they can come along, play and then have fun without stressing about playing 2 more games.

It's not rocket science you f'n pillocks at Subbies.

Have to be careful about the points allocation RC. If you don't leave a big enough gap between the grades then clubs just start giving up on first grade and stacking lower grades to fight for the championships. It's a really tough balance.

Championship points does need adjusting. Having First Grade worth nearly double Seconds, and nearly triple Thirds, seems a bit skewed. Especially if the Second Grade comp keeps knocking each other off.

However, keep in mind that some clubs are hunting just the First Grade trophy when they call in the troops.

In any case, I'd prefer something like this in terms of points multipliers:

Fourth Grade = 2
Third Grade = 5
Colts = 10
Second Grade = 10
First Grade = 15

First Grade is therefore only worth 50% more than reserves and Colts, compared to 80%. This should promote pathway development rather than mercenary treasure hunting. Fourth Grade is mostly for fun. Third Grade can help contribute, but again they're the reserves of the reserves.

Full round of bonus point wins is

Sixth Div: 75 points
Fifth Div: 125 points
Fourth Div: 150 points
Third Div: 200 points
Second Div: 210 points
First Div: 210 points

Makes the cowboy cup more interesting, too ;)

Just confirmed it will only be 28-0 in 3rd Grade.

Gee HAC is going bad! 62 at training last night. Yes we had a bad year with numbers last year but this year we are going good.

6 shute shield players???

There are 3 blokes in 1st grade who have played shute.

Two of them (35yo) last played in 2012 and the other (40yo) in about 2008. Wow that's really going to win us the comp.

Of the 1st xv

4 of them study at HAC (UWS)
3 more are old boys of HAC
Furthermore Of the 15 starters, 10 of them have never played for any other clubs other than hac or hawkesbury valley.

The number 10 even grew up living across from the front gate of the place. Yes a few people come from outside the college but people come to rugby club's from all places.

Tomorrow there is even 2 more hac old boys playing due to injures

The Year Of

Allen Oxlade (6)
Just looking at their team sheets from last weekend and spoken to a mate at Valley. He said HAC had good numbers and looked ok in the lower grades. Did notice they had no fresh reserves and at least one of their 1st grades played in the colts.

As far as I know, they had real problems with colts last year (both in numbers and that colts play between 2nds and 3rds) and killed them with numbers in the lower grades + having to have 5 grades. Their 2nd grade lost 6 or 7 games by less than 7, so couldn't have been that bad.

Have to agree that it sounds like I few blokes on here are talking shit

Sydney Harlequins absolutely fucking belted Canterbury in the top 2 grades (59-19 and 52-nil) and were unlucky to miss Thirds 15-21.
