Did Knox play bad or were they just outclassed?

A bit of both. It was nice to finally see Waverley in action, but I don’t think I saw them at their best. The game was perhaps tighter than the score suggests, but Waverley made the most of their chances and Knox didn’t.

That said, I don’t want to downplay the Waverley performance too much as they were simply too good. Their ability to rip the ball off attackers and real focus at holding the attacking player up is outstanding. They capitalised on Knox errors, but to be fair made a lot of their own and did lack discipline. Moretti was a class above every player on the field and an absolute pleasure to watch. Volkman (12) and Murphy (6) also played well – just about everyone else was solid. I was really surprised the way the Knox pack pushed them around in the scrums though. I haven’t seen Barker yet, but my guess is Waverley might need to play significantly better than today to beat them. Maybe Hutchinson-Walters would have made a big difference?

For Knox, Leigh (12) and Grobler (7) were the pick. The tight five played well and both Williams (4) and Yates (5) probably won the battle of the locks. The backs never seemed to get a chance to flow which is a real pity as Glassie and Leigh have obvious talent. Creating space for the backs and better ball retention are two things I feel they need to focus on.

Seems like they adapted well, WLF.

Who were the scorers for Waves.
.

Hi Rich_E,

To be honest it was unfortunately 1 of the worst games I have seen for quite a while.
Mistake riddled, worst game the Waves have played this year imo.

The backs had to adjust due to the outing of no.10 Lathan Hutchinson-Walters.
5 Waves tries, Molloy 2, Volkman 2 and McGuiggan 1.

Will need to improve to beat Barker.

Impressive win for Waverley to keep Knox to 0 at home not at full strength.

Great stuff by Aloys, a great victory for them, Sounds like trinity almost got it in the end.

Barker as expected had a successful day as well.

Do we know the 16a’s scores around the grounds at all?

I think Cranbrook won the 16As

Shudder to think what the score would have been if Lathan H-W had played. Waverley played well, rather than fantastically. Knox were pedestrian in so many areas. No lack of effort on the part of Knox, just creativity. They shuffled the ball rather than tried to run into gaps, whereas Waverley tried the opposite. The Waverley loosies also dominated their opponents and there was quite a lot of pilfered ball. Not a game for the ages, but if you beat one of the big schools at their home by lots to nil w/o a main playmaker and with lots of areas to improve on, then you would be well satisfied. As for Knox, they looked over-coached and under-inspired.

Have to disagree with some of this.

Moretti was good, but he was actually outplayed by Murphy and Molloy.

The Knox second rowers while tall, didn’t add a lot of punch around the paddock compared to the Waverley pairing.

The scrums seemed quite even Mostly. Knox lineouts were better, just with the height of someone that’s 6’9 at the front helps to steal the ball, in saying that Waverley stole some ball too.

The frustrating thing was how stop start the game was. I saw the Knox coaches having a rather agitated conversation with the referee after the game and I think rightfully so, the ref didn’t allow much continuity for either team, and that was probably one of the biggest factors on the way the game took on such a strange stop start affair with very minimal chance for either team to shine.
Sorry have to disagree. The knox second rowers in set play outplayed Waverley second rowers by winning 2 tight heads. Knox were alot stronger in scrums. Yes knox have tall timber in Yates who to his advantage used his hieght well in line outs. Nothing against Rice and Whiteman. Whiteman did add a little out wide at times. Rice i thought was very quite as i do believe he recieved 10 minutes in the bin for a high tackle.
I thought both Molley waverley (7) and Grobler Knox (7) were best on the paddock. Murphy wasn't far behind.

Yeah would be a good team. Grobler(K) was good, thought Kablau was very good and Leigh did well at 12 considering he has been a winger for so long.

6 from Knox and 7 from Waverley when Waverley won 32-0 though..

How many of the Knox boys are in year 11?

I thought Tadgh Murphy was MoM but doesn't get a look in ? Apart from that pretty close to the money.

Good day for waves v Knox at Warrawee. Waverley won all Opens and 16A, B and D. While good from one perspective, it is a bit of a concern (from a broader rugby perspective) that a school with a proud rugby tradition and such enormous numbers of students in each year can't produce better team performances.

I’d probably give Waverley a couple more (both wingers and fullback for sure) and Leigh instead of Glassie in the centres, but I think the difference is in the rest of the Waverley team not listed in that team were significantly stronger than the remainder of the Knox team.
