Thanks Jim. He is asleep at the moment. Needs to stay for observation. This is his second head knock in five years.
My wife and I agree that if he gets a third, then that is it for rugby.
I have many old rugby mates who are showing the effects now of multiple concussions.

Hi Joker. Sorry to hear about your boy and hope he is OK. My son has also had similar issues over several years and was greatly assisted by Westmead Hospital CHISM clinic that specialises in concussion management. Just a thought if you need assistance.

I though the New/Joeys game was evenly matched throughout most of the Game. It was only in the last 15minutes, when Kaeo Weeks was carded that Joeys started to dominate the game.

What a great match Black & White, and I agree that the card made a significant difference. The game would have been much closer otherwise. I took your advice and secured a Big Newie during the 2nd XV. Amazing.

Partial results from the Grammar v TAS clashes. TAS 16As won I think 14-10, TAS seconds lost 24-7 in the face of a better SGS team, TAS firsts won 28-14 in a very enjoyable game. TAS has a few things to fix up before beating Joeys :) Their tackling was very good slowing the fast SGS backline - TAS had a lot of practice here in the preseason! - but have a few things to fix up in the forwards in line outs and rucks. The Shore results reported earlier were interesting, holding SJC 3rds to 14-10 at half time before SJC ran ahead with 14 points to nil in the second half. Any other thirds results?

A great result for TAS over Grammar. Full results from Round 3 are as follows:

3rd XV Round 3 Results

TAS 28 d Grammar 14
Riverview 24 d Kings 12
Scots 24 d High 0
Joeys 26 d Shore 10

That leaves Riverview and Joeys still undefeated with TAS in 3rd place just two points behind.

Great to hear, I hoped you enjoyed both the food and the Rugby. For me It was an excellent day of Rugby and despite our 1st XV being well beaten on the score board, I felt they gave Joeys one hell of game. As stated except for the last 15 minutes, both sides brought an evenly contested to Stanmore that delighted spectators and supporters from both sides.

May I send similar thoughts Joker, Our children are our most valued possession and as much as we love our Rugby, their needs come first.

I though the New/Joeys game was evenly matched throughout most of the Game. It was only in the last 15minutes, when Kaeo Weeks was carded that Joeys started to dominate the game.

Up until till then, neither side gave away much in Defence. It was very much each player marking and repelling his opposite number.I could well be corrected, but with New Defending its 18-15 lead that Kaeo was given his matching orders. It was now, that Joeys scored their three tries and established their led. 21 unanswered points. Hence, the result was due to a maths problem, with the Joeys having the greater numbers. Newington simply could not afford to lose a player such as Kaeo, particular, against side such as Joeys. Up until till them, New had played excellent Rugby and had the appearance of taking the game. Their Forwards, worked well throughout the Game and showed no signs of tiring in the last stages of te game.

Overall, a spectular game of schoolboy with both sides displaying excellent standards of play. I was sitting next to some Joeys supporters and we both agreed, that the final score was not reflective at all, of the closeness of the game. Where, two high standard teams gave their supporters an impressive display of skill and precision Rugby.

As a New supporter, I was pleased that Newington was not at all outclassed by Joeys in either the forwards or the backs.

In other games:- Well done to our 16As with a very competitive with a 14-24 loss. Towards the end of the game they were gaining confidence and taking the game to Joeys. Last year as the 15As were well beaten 47-12 to Joeys. A impressive improvement.

The 15As was a rather disappointing effort with an absence of effective support play by New, to complete the breaks they made.

14As was a Tempe, so I didn't see the Game or heard any reports about it.

13As saw New create numerous gaps through their nimble and speedy backs in the Joeys Defence and establish a 28-0 led. 2nd half saw a tightening of the Joeys defence. With only two tries scored. Well to Joeys on an excellent recovery.

Oh, the 2nds, Newington were completely out classed by Joeys to the score of 53-0
Black&White the FirstXV New boys are tough but lack Rugby NOUS &SKILL there No11andNo15 are outstanding and make the team look good but the No15 looked very tired maybe to many representative game for Manly and NSW I guess that’s the price of a scholarship I guess . Now to the 15A seriously New where outplayed that Joeys team have Developed well and there rugby Nous was outstanding they destroyed our scrum and picked apart our line outs that the New team refused to kick for touch for line outs and where reduced to a U13 team .It was annoying and disappointing for a team that haven’t lost a game in 3 years, seriously the New team have some outstanding boys but the whole team needs to be coached how to play the game which Joeys do much better.

Hello Rippa

To me the game was a magnificent display of schoolboy Rugby and a great advertisement for the game of Rugby. As for Rugby skills this is changing at Newington as teams across the age divisions become oriented to running Rugby. The days of Bash and Barging Rugby, based on our Pacific Islanders is now being replaced. is Our 13As is a fine example of this new running rugby approach.

As for the 15As game, I think we need to agree to disagree. To me Newington failed to support the players that made the Breaks became isolated and turned over the ball. They, appeared to lack purpose and fire in the belly. This sense of complacency is best demonstrated by the slow passing that resulted in the incept try for Joeys. Hence, from my perspective, I don't think Joeys were the superior side, although a very good side. I feel our 15A side lack urgency. They need to be better prepared by playing top opposition that can be achieved by touring Brisbane and NZ. They are side that has yet to reach their full potential. But they do need a "Boot up the Bum". Hopefully, the Joeys game may do just that.

Also, from where I stood Newington had a try disallowed in the last minute of the game when our winger grounded the ball clearly on the line. However, the referee though otherwise. But the referee is always right even when he/she is wrong.

But, I do feel both Newington and Joeys are the strongest sides in the 15A competition. And if there is one side that can beat this New side, it's Joeys.

Strongly disagree. New are a massive team and far from the fittest, and by the hour mark were visibly tiring across the park, big forwards struggling to get back. Joeys problem is size; other than their No.8 there barely looks to be a player over 6' or 90kgs, but they are very fit, and have been running sides down in the 2nd half in the pre-season. Joeys had camped in New's 22 for around 10 minutes and took 3-4 scrums rather than take an easy penalty for 18-all, as the previously dominant New scrum was sapped. It was after this sustained pressure they gave up the yellow after multiple infringements.

So while the extra man certainly didn't help (they actually carded the wrong player at first - 15 instead of 11) that doesn't really tell the story. They were gassed after an hour. There really are some big units in that side right across the park who need some serious conditioning work.

Other teams will get fitter as the season progresses but Joeys won't get any bigger, so you feel they can only go so far, but they're a pretty smart team and trying to keep it close and out gas their opponents looks to be a strategy.

Haven't coached school boys for a least 17 years but I was of the belief that if a player was carded a replacement player would come on due to safety concerns. When did this change?

Hello NedKelly
You make some interesting points, the criticism of New forwards tiring towards the end of the game is not a new one. I was at the other end of the field, so I didn't see how the New forwards were looking. But in other games, admittedly, they were teams not of a Joeys standard, fitness has not been an issue.

But this is not to say that fitness against high quality teams, might be a problem in the last minutes of the GPS matches. Time will tell, but with the school holidays coming up holiday training might need a fitness focus.

Nevertheless, I really feel that the carding of our player was the crucial reason why Joeys scored 21 unanswered points. But that is my current perspective and could change, if a near end of match collapse occurs again.

he 15As was a rather disappointing effort with an absence of effective support play by New, to complete the breaks they made.

You need to understand how the Joeys rugby factory works. In Year 9 you get additional enrolments (including a rural contingent), and you get day boarders converting to full-time boarders.

And the 13As and 14As who invariably have been respectable, but not always outstanding ... get the blow torch treatment

Ticehurst & Boyd (who coached the 1sts for many years) then turn ....what to them are "raw recruits", into the real deal

With access to the kids more-a-less around the clock, these 2 coaches impart a wealth of knowledge, and an instil a determination to win and "take no prisoners" .. it's often best seen when they match up to the depleted $cots 15As... it's full bore. There is no taking the foot off the throat.

Not sure how they (Joeys) responded to having to play Sevens (against Scots), this year .. I would guess they wouldn't have liked it. Either way, in the under 15s important the foundations are laid.

It's ironic that Joker makes out Scots are turning out stormtroopers ... I see it differently. Albeit I do admire the Joeys indoctrination. [PS Joker ... hope your boy is well ... never fun going to the ER.]

In any event, by the time the 16s has rolled around ... Joeys are red hot ... seldom do you ever see a weak Joeys 16As.

The fact that Waverley thumped them this year, is a rare aberration (and not an indictment of Joeys) ... although talk to a Cranbrook Dad and they will argue a different perspective.

and so runs the well oiled Joeys machine ... and so after a few years of disappointing results, at least at the top level, it is back to "normal programming" ... where Joeys stands (in 2019) to win everything bar the kitchen sink.

I think Joeys are now looking very short odds to win 15As, 16As, 3rds, 2nds and 1sts.

The Joeys faithful will be cock-a-hoop.

Shipping 3 tries with a man in the bin suggests you’re not that close in the first place.

15As will be a tie (to the extent that it's even a competition), neither of those sides will lose again this year. Don't know enough about the 16As age group, but I think it's quite strong, although I again think that Joeys will be hard to beat for the reasons you state. I agree with you about 1sts, 2nds and 3rds.

I hear that Joeys 15As have 4 training sessions a week and I can believe it from what I saw yesterday. Very well-drilled and obviously well-coached in the basics of the game.

While at Newington, the 13As were very well-coached by Rob Egerton, but nothing much happened in the way of taking that further in the 14As. As another posted indicated earlier, there's a feeling that there has been nowhere near enough time spent on scrum and lineout work in the development of the age group - as was shown yesterday when they could barely win a lineout and the scrum was under pressure every time despite having a size advantage.

Hi B&W.

From memory Joeys scored, the card came after, and two more Joeys tries followed, but I stand to be corrected. No argument that the card was reason the score blew out, I'm merely suggesting the card was a result of fatigue, & from where I stood, New looked done. My friend sympathised that the poor buggers might find themselves doing a few extra 400s next week...

No, it was 18-15 when the card came. The three tries came after the card. No argument about Joeys being much fitter though.

Joeys picked loose forwards in the pack and left best front rower and 2nd rowers in 2nds.

Gamble paid off , smart coaching yes New did fatigue would have been interesting though had of New scored 2 more tries that went begging and half time was 33-8 instead.

This could have gone either way , Joeys were gone early and another try would have been different outcome.
