Mac has exceptional talent. His next 12 months will be the difference between great development and being in the program. Mac probably needs a real life professional mentor to guide him and unfortunately there is no one in the Reds who can do this. I do think that he has the willpower and intelligence to work through this in the next 2 years on his own accord.

If not at the Reds , then where will he get his mentoring?
He had a pretty good group around him last year at UQ and I could see the development in his game. There is plenty that just playing rugby against peers and older heads will teach him.
People get caught up in the highlight reels, yes he can do some awesome things with ball in hand, but he has things to work on to get up to Super Rugby standard . He’s only in his second year out of school and a fair chunk of his highlights are from his schoolboy days , he wasn’t playing against Super Rugby standard players then .
Let’s just give him a chance to grow as a player , who would he replace in the match day squad currently anyway?

My post probably wasn’t explained well.
I think Mac has a great future and I would like to see him given the best development possible leading into the fullback position. The Reds don’t have a tier 1 fullback to mentor Mac with the clear direction of Mac taking over the fullback reigns in the coming years. Mac will be more so competing with the likes of Jock in the next year or two. By no means do I think the Reds isn’t the place for Mac to develop. Thorny and co are great coaches and with Mac’s intelligence he has a good future here in QLD.

Interesting concept, do you have to be world class in a position to be able to effectively coach/mentor someone else in that role?
I actually think Jock has a lot to offer in terms of how he reads the game and positions himself, he isn’t the fastest, biggest or most agile fullback but mentally and in decision making I think he is right up there.
Personally I would much rather the likes of Hegarty/Jock providing advice then someone like Folau, who by virtue of physical attributes would have been considered Tier 1, but wasn’t a ‘student’ of the game IMO.

It’s no secret that we lack a solid Wallabies fullback right now. DHP and Kearney are two examples of a good mentor to up and coming fullbacks that we have in Australia. I’d even go to the extent of Hodge.
All I’m saying is that Mac doesn’t have this at the Reds. No biggy, just an observation.

Reds finances looking reasonable after COVID: revenue declined from $20million to $16million, however QRU managed to post $2.1 million profit
The Company’s 2020 profit includes Government stimulus funding (in response to the impact of COVID-19) in an amount of $1,950,921, which partially offset a reduction in annual broadcast- related funding from Rugby Australia in an amount of $2,785,212.
The Company’s 2020 profit also includes a depreciation charge of $448,969 (2019: $537,282) and interest expense of $183,682 (2019: $330,921). After adding back these charges, the Company recorded earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of $2,745,754, an improvement of over $1,845,549 on 2019’s EBITDA ($900,205).
Although they do note ongoing concerns in relation to COVID and the commercial impact.

I think the confusion is that you've said there is a lack of suitable 'mentors' for the young bloke, i don't think mentor is the right term for what you're trying to explain.
And i'll go back to the previous question i asked, do you have to be 'Tier 1' in a position to be able to effectively coach/mentor someone else in that role? When you look at the best coaches in the world, how many of them were world class rugby players?
